What are some good space opera novels you would recommend?

2001: A Space Odyssey

2010: Odyssey Two

2061: Odyssey Three

Those were books that I enjoyed when I was in high school. They are all quite old, but even so, I recommend them. I never did get to read 3001: The Final Odyssey, I'll have to correct that one of these days.

That depends on how broad you define the opera part.

Though for anything space/sci-fi related, I usually recommend Dune, Ender's Game, Hyperion, Starship Troopers ... scratch that, get a list of all Hugo and Nebula award winning novels and start working your way through that.

^i-Robot is a decent read. Not all too creative, but it the novel tackles some interesting theories.

Anything by Asimov is a good starting point. He's good at telling stories in a futuristic setting without being heavy on the ins and outs of future technology. For the latter you can always read Clarke but some of his stories leave a lot to be desired (e.g.: Time Odyssey. Don't read it.). Since his Space Odyssey has been recommended already I'll chip in and say 'Rendezvous with Rama' is also a must-read (but you can dismiss the rest of the Rama books). If you're looking for a military space opera, however, I'd recommend 'The Forever War.'

For space opera specifically, I'd suggest the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. For truly old school space opera, anything by Edmund Hamilton or E E 'Doc' Smith. For more militaristic stuff, maybe the 'Honor Harrington' series by David Weber. If you just want some books that are just plain fun, then Lois McMaster Bujold wrote a whole series about Miles Vorkosigan. For more literary stuff, try either John C Wright (current) or Cordwainer Smith (older).
