Wolfwere ? As far as making up creature names is concerned that's pretty lazy ! What are they, wolves that turn into humans when it's full moon ? And exactly what type of person ( mad or not ) goes around biting wolves and cursing them with "humanness" in the first place !

Wolfweres are canon creatures, and yes - their default form is the wolf (more like a direwolf actually), but they can take humanoid form. Even more bizarrely, their favoured class is bard! They have a special song ability that slows their enemies. They'll often start with that ability while in human form, then change to either their hybrid form of their direwolf-like form. They have DR verses cold iron instead of silver.

In Baldur's Gate (Tales of the Sword Coast) you find yourself on an island with both werewolves and wolfweres. The two creature types are natural (or rather, unnatural) enemies.

You can blame the lazy name on Gygax.

At least "wolfwere" is more in line with what we'd say in modern English, "wolfman".  ("Were" being an Old English word for "man", as in "weregild", the blood price you have to pay in gold for killing a man.)  Doesn't sound as good to say "Manwolf".  But I can see why they'd need the distinction.

Ya I figured thats what the wolf weres are and I gotta say it doesn't really make a lot of sense, and that's assuming werewolves made sense to you to begin with. A low intelligence (animal) can change form into something much smarter and somehow knows how to do the the things a human does and speak and think? Or do they just take human form but still run around on all fours naked and chase squirrels?

Wolfweres tend to mimic humanoid bards, so they only have to be as smart as the average musician. :)

Just read that article. It's pretty messed up both stating that a werewolf (Human) buggered a real wolf to create the offspring, and that this wolf can turn into a human female even if it is a male etc. Going a little too far beyond the realms of decency and taste imo.

You'll notice that first section about their origins is missing a citation. It certainly wasn't mentioned in their original Monstrous Manual entry.

My understanding was that wolfweres were a natural (albeit magical) species completely separate from werewolves. Covergent evolution at work, perhaps. Their hatred for each other would seem to be at odds with the claim that they're closely related.

A wolf turning into a bard of whatever sex it wants to be at the time that is the spawn of werewolves and wolves ! I think I prefer Mr Eligard's idea of daft humans running around on all fours chasing squirrels.

Well, DnD has plenty of goofy monsters, such as the duckbunny (which is exactly what you think it is), or the trossip (evil dust bunnies), or the senmurv (half wolf/half eagle/half rainbow magic). http://www.headinjur...m/article73.htm

They're no weirder than creatures that actually once existed, like 'duck croc', 'rat croc', 'boar croc' and 'dog croc':

And what is a platypus other than an unholy cross between a duck and a beaver? :)

There's a whole bunch more of them here. It makes you wonder what they were smoking when they came up with some of them.

Hi All,

OK, I think we can safely say that we have covered the special weapon situation ....

No need for more "awful monsters", which just feel as though they dumb down the game.

Cheers,
Lance.

Such a beast would surely be a match for Wooly Rupert himself!

It's actually a miniature giant space rabbit. It can fly by spinning it's ears like a helicopter

Hi All,

"Honey" certainly had a "jump" on her (not quite flying) .... We came back one day and found her scrabbling around on our bed ... She looked so surprised when we spotted her with a look of "Oh oh, I've been caught!" ...

My wife and I still miss her merry runarounds.

Cheers,
Lance.

Maybe your campaign will feature a brain-addled barbarian that just happens to have the world smallest giant space rabbit?
