Really, what is it? Lately I'm seeing hairstyles that make my toenails curl on people who should look better. For instance, in this picture (I mean the cut of the person on the right):

There are some other screenshots where the Inquisitor has the same back-of-his-head-shaved cut, which i find absolutely horrible. OK, there it's someone's Inquisitor, and all I can accuse them of is excessively bad taste, but the presentations appear to feature several variants of these, increasingly also on NPCs. It's not just that I don't like them. I find them actively repulsive and Just seeing them makes me shudder and want to take a step backward.
 
I vaguely recall these things actually looking good in some of the earlier material. What happened? And if there was a problem, why replace them with something that could serve as the incarnation of ugliness?

Essentially, what I'm complaining about is the *abundance*, rather than the presence, of ugly ultra-short hairstyles in many variations so similar that they don't really deserve the term "varations", while the old classic braided hairstyles which have been an identifying part of the setting are completely absent and even for our Inquisitors, we have an extremely limited selection if we want something longer, and/or mor elaborate than Cassandra's hairstyle.
I'm also complaining about the possibility of seeing an abundance of those extra-ugly hairstyles on NPCs, which - with minor exceptions here and there, I find are completely out of place in the setting, and in a culture which is renowned for making everything elaborate and fancy.

That's what I was afraid of. It looks completely out of place. I guess from some people's viewpoint that makes it true art, but I do not share that viwepoint.

As for being the latest Orlesian fashion, that's one I'd be hard-pressed to leave uncommented for politeness's sake.

I must admit, I find some of these hairstyles lame. Scout Harding hair looks like an wig. Maybe the frostbite engine is just not very good for making good looking hair.

Shudder.  The only problem I've really had (if you can call a completely aesthetic quibble a "problem") is the textures on the hairstyles, but in the most recent twitter stream and trailer that issue seemed to have improved.

I've never been to an Orlesian Ball in the late Dragon Age. I don't know what passes for fashion in that palce and that time. Unless anyone here knows differently, I think we'll have to chalk up any distaste to personal preference.

There's plenty of people in RL whose hairstyles leave me bewildered and slightly nauseous but that doesn't mean I waste time commenting about it. Just as long as there's at least one hairstyle that I find agreeable for my Inquisitor I'm happy. Beside, one unsightly haircut isn't going to make condemn me Bioware for having bad taste in a game I haven't even played yet.

Have you actually seen all the hairstyles for every race in Inquisition? Do you know how many options there actually are? Beside maybe the female Qunari I've haven't seen a lack of variety.

Atleast we don't have 3 renditions of the friar hairstyle like in DA2. That was horrible.

OP: I agree with you-the hairstyles are bad. I actually had never seen a woman with a Marine haircut before, so I assumed the blonde woman in the trailer was a man at first.

But, oh well. They're not changing them now.

I know right!! I think they need to hire a fashion designer just for aesthetic purposes.

A lot of them are also very modern styles. Celene's reminds me of a european fashion model on a runway, for example. "Fashion in Orlais" provides a good story justification for Orlesians (not the Inquisitor) to sport that hair, but its still justification. The artists made a choice at some point to go that route instead of more traditional styles for the setting. And that's partially what some people in this thread are questioning.

 

It may be difficult to do more traditionally fancy hairstyles with the engine, and simple styles would fit Orlais poorly.

Bioware needs to get a hold of some decent barbers, haistylists and hairdressers...I am sure there must be some in Edmonton...I mean their hair designs are simply awful...Especially if you compare their hair designs to what we have been seeing in other next-generation RPG like the upcoming Witcher 3.
