Really, what is it? Lately I'm seeing hairstyles that make my toenails curl on people who should look better. For instance, in this picture (I mean the cut of the person on the right):

*Careful, slight spoiler*

Spoiler

There are some other screenshots where the Inquisitor has the same back-of-his-head-shaved cut, which i find absolutely horrible. OK, there it's someone's Inquisitor, and all I can accuse them of is excessively bad taste, but the presentations appear to feature several variants of these, increasingly also on NPCs. It's not just that I don't like them. I find them actively repulsive and Just seeing them makes me shudder and want to take a step backward.

I vaguely recall these things actually looking good in some of the earlier material. What happened? And if there was a problem, why replace them with something that could serve as the incarnation of ugliness?

Edit for clarification:
Essentially, what I'm complaining about is the *abundance*, rather than the presence, of ugly ultra-short hairstyles in many variations so similar that they don't really deserve the term "varations", while the old classic braided hairstyles which have been an identifying part of the setting are completely absent and even for our Inquisitors, we have an extremely limited selection if we want something longer, and/or mor elaborate than Cassandra's hairstyle.
I'm also complaining about the possibility of seeing an abundance of those extra-ugly hairstyles on NPCs, which - with minor exceptions here and there, I find are completely out of place in the setting, and in a culture which is renowned for making everything elaborate and fancy.

I like hair and feel like other aspects of the game have gotten far too much favor over it.

Like redesigning skyhold's layout 3 times, having 30 mounts, and constantly tweaking NPC appearances.

The contrast with the high res faces and bad hair gives me shudders.

I would also buy DLC but some hairs should be free DLC too.

And I'm sure gameplay fluidity is no problem because the multiplayer team designed/fine-tuned combat

But those are just content/design issue. Hair rendering is a technical issue. They have to work hand-in-hand with Dice to figure out how best to implement it to fit the Dragon Age world. Have you seen TressFX in Tomb Raider and Fur Rendering in Witcher 3? That's what next-gen hair tech is going to look like.

hell even capcom, in Dragons Dogma, gave us long hair.. and not JUST long hair

long hair WITH PHYSICS. OH SWEET MERCY.

then again,

that game was awesome.

nothing comes close to bioware story telling outside of tell tale, but that gameplay. UNF.

Wholeheartedly agree. DD is just an awesome game. if it had BW story telling it would be flawless IMO. I'm hoping Capcom develop a remastered edition for PS4 and Xbox One.

Sure, really long hair is going to take some effort, and I'm absolutely willing to pay for it. However, there is no excuse for the selection we got with half of the styles featuring the equivalent of three-day stubble and nothing else, and only two or three styles with hair longer than Cassandra's.

The hair we've seen doesn't bother me personally. What i've seen so far is fine and unless i've missed something, we haven't seen all the options, especially female yet anyway. TBH, no matter how many options a game gives me, iff there is one hairstyle that I particularly like I just end using that ad infinitum anyway, I guess i'm just pretty boring and easy to please. All I ask for is one good thick braided hair. That's all. Just one. Pretty Please?

ETA

I am abit surprised by the preponderance of super short female hairs though. We'll see I guess.

I kinda think there is a pretty good mix of hairstyles.. I'm still confused about the hairstyles for females, they've only showed guy hairstyles in character creation right? and female Qunari..which i think was more Qunari>female

But I Think at most half of them are just really short and most are those are not so great to me but the other half of them are pretty good.

I want more but that has to do with me just wanting a ton of options and not calling the ones i've seen(or not seen cause I don't see me making a male character until i just get bored with the game) bad.

There are at least a couple of okay looking styles I can use, but the majority is awful. I want some variety! I was so looking forward to these:

Those three braided female hairs are pretty much exactly what I would love to see, especially the middle one. I know they were very early models but has it been said for definate that they've been nixed?

Considering that your character has a rampaging case of the 'dark side cooties', she has bigger problems than clipping hair. And yea, I never use this style since the texture looks fake (like pudding dripped over her head and allowed to fall). I usually use the short bob or more elaborate updo with the 40's look.

Trying to figure out her class. The name suggests smuggler/IA, but the outfit is sith-y looking. And the dialogue suggests she's a Bounty Hunter?

She's a commando (and my only DS character, though I haven't played on that one in while)

So long as there is a sexy pixie style hair for females, I'm happy.

They showed almost all of the men's hairstyles, and they are unlocked for both male and female, so yeah. If we get more hairstyles it's because they decided to add more before launch. There might be a couple of hairs that we haven't seen yet but I really doubt they will turn out to be the best of the bunch. They are probably similar to the ones we've already seen.

The problem is that, yes, half of the hairstyles are basically the same with a small variation, which are the afros. While I'm happy for my fellow players who always wanted a decent afro and they finally got it, players like me, who know will never use those hairstyles are left frustrated, because of the lack of variety on the other styles, specially of the more feminine styles.

If I was going to play as a male inquisitor then I would be happy, there are at least 4 I like for men. But I never play as a male, so you can see my problem. There's only a couple of hairstyles that I would consider for my female inquisitors, which are the longer ones (and the only ones who look feminine), but they are so dull, they don't fit my inquisitors' personality at all. At this point I would be happy with just ONE of those braided hairstyles they gave up on.

It's frustrating because it's clear that they didn't give the same amount of attention to both men and women. Which is an ongoing thing considering the masculine outfits females have to wear to the ball and in skyhold. I guess we're not allowed to have feminine Inquisitors in this game (masculine walk in cut scenes, masculine hair, masculine clothes. They probably tried to compensate that with the overly exaggerated hip swaying walk lol It's just a mess. Sigh.)

Its seems to be engine limitation or such. Bioware was and still remains below average in the industry when it comes to hair. Its hard for me to undestand why, when generic MMO korean factories can do it but Bioware apparently can't, are the model designers stuborn or there is too much worry about clipping which customers actually don't care about? At least not to such a degree to remove long hair completelly. A matter of fact Lineage 2 had long hair with rudimentary animation in ... 2003.

It might be hard for them, but I think they could do it if they put effort in it. For me it's simple as this: they rather spend the time and money on other things. Which is fair enough, the game looks amazing but for once I would like to see them give a bit of priority to these things. Specially when they introduce such a detailed CC system that even allows you to change your adam's apple. It always baffles me how modders can make something 100 times better looking and they aren't professionals. But this time we can't rely on mods so we're pretty much screwed.

While I don't like every one of the styles they've shown, I think at least three of the male ones looked good. Admittedly, I'm not a guy and pretty much won't be using them, but they don't all suck. As far as the female hairstyles go, I haven't seen all that many examples (just a few to date), but I expect that if I thought three of the male ones looked decent, then there are probably at least a couple of female hairstyles that I can live with when I create my femquisitor.

As a female, sure, I'd prefer to have some longer hair options, but I actually liked femHawke's short hair and was reasonably happy with it (despite preferring to have long hair as a general rule). I think it's probably an exaggeration to say that all the hairstyles suck, although I agree with people who say that the hair textures have looked off compared to the detail level/realism of the faces.

At any rate, it would nice if they throw in a free hairstyle DLC or something at some point if possible (I certainly wouldn't pay for hairstyles unless they're all supermodel fabulous or something).

Males and females are SHARING hairstyles. What you see is what you are getting!

It's hard to judge because the faces are male, (I wish there was a female inquisitor CC videos so I could see and compare), but I imagine I could tinker with a face to match a hairdo to my satisfaction.

Well, we'll find out in 3 weeks anyway.

Yeah, it's completely baffling. We can customize separate completely minor aspects of characters, such as separate parts of the eyes, your adam's apple and suchlike, but are so limited in the choice of hairstyles which are going to be much more visible. IMO that's setting the wrong priority in a really major way.

Sadly the only "feminine" thing we get is the "sexy walk" that is quite frankly, orrendous.
