1 word. Helm.

You mean helmet?

Yeah that word might help if Bioware was actually able to make aesthetically pleasing helmets but....

The hairstyles are actually quite fine in comparison.

Really, what is it? Lately I'm seeing hairstyles that make my toenails curl on people who should look better. For instance, in this picture (I mean the cut of the person on the right):

*Careful, slight spoiler*

Spoiler

There are some other screenshots where the Inquisitor has the same back-of-his-head-shaved cut, which i find absolutely horrible. OK, there it's someone's Inquisitor, and all I can accuse them of is excessively bad taste, but the presentations appear to feature several variants of these, increasingly also on NPCs. It's not just that I don't like them. I find them actively repulsive and Just seeing them makes me shudder and want to take a step backward.

I vaguely recall these things actually looking good in some of the earlier material. What happened? And if there was a problem, why replace them with something that could serve as the incarnation of ugliness?

Edit for clarification:
Essentially, what I'm complaining about is the *abundance*, rather than the presence, of ugly ultra-short hairstyles in many variations so similar that they don't really deserve the term "varations", while the old classic braided hairstyles which have been an identifying part of the setting are completely absent and even for our Inquisitors, we have an extremely limited selection if we want something longer, and/or mor elaborate than Cassandra's hairstyle.
I'm also complaining about the possibility of seeing an abundance of those extra-ugly hairstyles on NPCs, which - with minor exceptions here and there, I find are completely out of place in the setting, and in a culture which is renowned for making everything elaborate and fancy.

Well, I believe the haistyles you see reflect Orlesian society's taste (IE: mostly the nobility) and Thedas in general.  Hair cut short is a soldier/warrior thing... look at our military... easier to main... trust me on this. Besides, there are no hair salons in Thedas. !

As for long hair... well it appears to be a graphical limitation when displaying  armour and long hair covering said clothes/armour. Can it be done? answer = yes. Why is it not done? answer = time and coding effort = more money = against budget constraints.

Having said that, I'd like my Femquisitor to have a Punk hair style... just to be different. B)

Except for Dorian, I think you can have his hairstyle (if it's not the same, it's pretty similar).

Edit: Actually no, it's different. Someone said on another thread it was the same but it's not.

It's quite similar, but different, yes. All the companions/advisors have their own hair. Your hair, however, not so unique :P.

They showed almost all of the men's hairstyles, and they are unlocked for both male and female, so yeah. If we get more hairstyles it's because they decided to add more before launch. There might be a couple of hairs that we haven't seen yet but I really doubt they will turn out to be the best of the bunch. They are probably similar to the ones we've already seen.

The problem is that, yes, half of the hairstyles are basically the same with a small variation, which are the afros. While I'm happy for my fellow players who always wanted a decent afro and they finally got it, players like me, who know will never use those hairstyles are left frustrated, because of the lack of variety on the other styles, specially of the more feminine styles.

If I was going to play as a male inquisitor then I would be happy, there are at least 4 I like for men. But I never play as a male, so you can see my problem. There's only a couple of hairstyles that I would consider for my female inquisitors, which are the longer ones (and the only ones who look feminine), but they are so dull, they don't fit my inquisitors' personality at all. At this point I would be happy with just ONE of those braided hairstyles they gave up on.

It's frustrating because it's clear that they didn't give the same amount of attention to both men and women. Which is an ongoing thing considering the masculine outfits females have to wear to the ball and in skyhold. I guess we're not allowed to have feminine Inquisitors in this game (masculine walk in cut scenes, masculine hair, masculine clothes. They probably tried to compensate that with the overly exaggerated hip swaying walk lol It's just a mess. Sigh.)

Some are pony tails and braided up in buns..or something. I guess I'm just not surprised that it's the case, they never had that many hairstyles.

Variety is really good thing I agree they don't really have it, making the best with what there is isn't really the same as having something you'd prefer and the hairstyle you pick I always thought made up like half your character.

outside the cutscenes I think the walk is kind of overly feminine but that just shows that they added it on afterwards.

with outfits again the lack of variety is the problem if it was just more balanced that would be great, theres just some things they didn't try as hard to do and it was more important for them to focus on men if things were limited..which is crappy and horrible.

Luckily I'm kinda happy with like a third of them, none of them even close to my hair but they might go with my inquisitors.  i'm sure you can find/make some prettier armor... possibly... I wonder if they never decided to give males the option to wear makeup would it be as in depth..

Unless you're qunari. Then there's no helm, and a whopping three (3) very short (and personally very unappealing) hair meshes to choose between.

Just think of the roleplaying possibilities with all of these super short hairstyles - you can pretend that a terrible head lice epidemic is sweeping Orlais.  L'horreur!  :P

I don't know why the hitler youth haircut is suddenly trendy again. Anyway in three or four years it will look as fantasey as any other.

Is there a video/pic of all the horn options for qunari?

Yep. Here

Mike Laidlaw confirmed that we've seen all of them. The ones for the males will likely be (almost) identical. A good chunk of them are broken (and all the broken ones appear to be variations of the same horn style, just broken in different places).

All I've taken from this thread is the bizarre suggestion shaved temples is an attempt at modernism.

You don't like the hairstyle, I get it, no need to accuse ancient warrior cultures like the Celts or Vikings of being hipsters due to their hairstyles failing to meet your Thedas fashionista standards.

Well, Leliana does tell the story of the woman who had live songbirds in her 'voluminous hair'.  I guess those Orlesians will try anything once. :P

I'll be sure to bring that up in the conversations at the ball  The only question is: will this cost me influence or are digs at others' fashion sense like that an accepted part of the Game.

You know what would be the absolute horror: autodialogue that makes us compliment the hairstyles. *Shudder* Good that this isn't ME...

I'm a tad bit jelly of the Qunari, because they are the only race that gets a mohawk. Granted it's not a great one but I think I could make it work on my elf.

I like them, I'm amazed by the depth of the character creation shown in the streams when compared to the previous games.

I too would like some nicer hairstyles.  Honestly, I wonder how much it would cost to get some hairstylist in and say "Look, this is how our engine limits us for hair.  Can you design us some nice-looking hairstyles around that?"  I cut Bioware a fair bit of slack here, though, because Hair is Hard, ok?  Notoriously so.  The only ones who seem to have pretty hair nailed are Sqeenix, and frankly 'pretty' is about all they specialise in.

What I don't understand is why Bioware's eyebrows are always so damn appalling.  Thick, messy eyebrows are ok for dudebros but my female chars always end up needing some tweezing.  It's not like there's engine limitations going on there...

That was me. I looked again a while later and saw the differences. I forgot the little gelled bit near the top. It makes Dorians distinct.

Also made me realize we might not get the Alistair cut and it made me sad.

I thought Cassandra's eyebrows were fine for women. You think they're bad?

Oh, NPC eyebrows are usually fine, but for whatever reason, the ones in the CC almost always suck.

Happened in Mass Effect, SWTOR, DA:O...can't remember if it happened in DA2 cos I went with default for that one.

IMO, they went the opposite way in DA2.  Default Hawke's eyebrows are too thin, but you can only really notice it if you change her hair.
