I too would like some nicer hairstyles.  Honestly, I wonder how much it would cost to get some hairstylist in and say "Look, this is how our engine limits us for hair.  Can you design us some nice-looking hairstyles around that?"  I cut Bioware a fair bit of slack here, though, because Hair is Hard, ok?  Notoriously so.  The only ones who seem to have pretty hair nailed are Sqeenix, and frankly 'pretty' is about all they specialise in.

What I don't understand is why Bioware's eyebrows are always so damn appalling.  Thick, messy eyebrows are ok for dudebros but my female chars always end up needing some tweezing.  It's not like there's engine limitations going on there...

Actually I found the opposite true.  Aveline and Isabela's overplucked eyebrows bothered me more than any other feature they had.  As soon as I could, I replaced their faces with a more natural look.

Not saying I want unibrow, but something between that and Whoopie Goldberg is nice.

I see a problem with those trying to play as a grizzly warrior/mage with a wild beard and a fresh hair cut. Are the braided dreads from the last 2 games not an option? Seems like a step backward and have serious doubts the character creator will get edited in dlc.

Still pumped for game!!!!

Sadly it's the norm in Bioware games. It's either terrible looking hair or ugly preset faces. In all the games that I was able to download mods I would always download hair first for Bioware games. They just aren't good at it.

That being said, I'll wait to see if there are other options when the game releases.

Well, Bioware isn't really good at hair department. Look at their other games.

I like that one, but in general I agree with you. I want to see more basic hairstyles especially longer hair for both men AND women. I want to see more braided and dread-like hairstyles too.

Orlesion hairstyles must be based on the same culture that inspired the Orlesions, the French! Specifically the French of the 1600s to 1700s.

And we know some of what the fashion in Orlais is like from Leiliana. Remember her story about the woman who had birds placed in her hair? That tells us the women have long hair, and their hair is kept up.

Regardless, you have to look at what lead to the fashion in each age. Fashion isn't random, so you can't just do anything and say that's the fashion. The fashion has to actually have followed the normal path of evolution.

If you're referring to that time period, wigs were fashionable. Older women wore them because their hair would become too sparse and unable to hold curl or decorations and lice was ever present. Nobles, both men and women, cropped their hair really short or shaved their heads and wore wigs instead, in order to keep them at bay. They also wore hair pieces to make their hair seem fuller or "taller".

Its a rule of game design and character creators. Game devs and artists save all the good hairstyles, eyes and noses for their favorite npcs, then we get the leftovers to make our frankensteins with.

Bioware just has a thing for bad hair and silly hats. This has been going on for years and years. I'm not trying to badmouth them, but it would be nice to have hair like this for once.

Generally, I get that there may be some difficulties with very long hair but the plastic textures are a real turn-off, and the abundance of ultra-short styles reeks of negligence - or of heavy last-minute cuts.

On the other hand, are there games that do this better? I haven't come across any lately. Skyrim didn't impress out of the box, and there aren't too many other games with full 3D character customization.

This is something David Gaider reblogged and expanded on via Tumblr about hair. I'm not sure if it has been linked before, but it's very helpful for understanding developers' limitations with beautiful/realistic/long/etc. hair.

I understand we can't get realistic moving hair, and I absolutely get that they thought implementing TressFX or something similar for a variety of hairstyles wasn't worth what they'd have to sacrifice somewhere else, but even with the way things are - i.e. with non-moving hair - I wish they'd sacrifice on the other end for a change. I'm sure most players would find some minor clipping here and there acceptable if it meant they could have hairstyles they like.

And all that's still no excuse for the abundance of outright ugly styles. Really, I'd be hard-pressed to find a game featuring so many styles I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. OK, that's a matter of taste, but more than half of all hairstyles featuring the equivalent of three-day stubble, that's just not acceptable from my POV. Who are we playing? Inmates of a high security prison? Exclusively male 21st century soldiers? IMO the selection is plainly inappropriate.

This is a huge assumption.

BioWare operates on a level of quality where persistent character clipping is not acceptable as a default. If players mod in clipping hair, that's their prerogative.

I admit, hair is one of the very few things that make me go 'Hmm' in this game. Right now I've seen a lot of buns and hair that reaches to shoulders (and of course the Qunari hairstyles) so I can't help wonder if we'll also get the braid we saw in the Dwarf concept art and dreadlocks like in DAO.

OMG My OCD would flip out.  I can't stand even a small amount clipping.  It's why, even when I have long hair choices, I stick with short bobs or updo's or ponytails.  I can sympathize with those who can tolerate it and desire more options than just the ones presented to us, but I'm not one of them.  I'm not too happy with the textures as they look so far, but it's too early to say for sure.  I won't know how unworkable it is till I get into the CC and look at different facial shapes, and color variations.

I don't see a problem with the hairstyle choices.

For me it'd be weird seeing women or men with longer than shoulder-length hair as people who enter combat frequently.

And I just generally find shoulder-length hair on women attractive, don't know why.

I say having an acceptable selection of hairstyles is also a quality issue in a game like this.

I think this is the case for me too. There are a couple of short styles we've seen that I think look good, but the texture looks ugly compared to their high quality faces. Especially if they make the hair paler. There's a screen I saw before of a male elf with different pale blond hairstyles and it looked like someone had dumped butter onto his head. I'm hoping they look decent in black/brown.

I'm hoping that Sten's hair is back in the cc though (especially now genders share hair). Without it the only 'black hair' would be shaved like Vivienne's.

I like a few of the hairstyles and I'm happy with long hair that's in an updo but the texture doesn't look great. Will be interested to see it in-game at release :)
