What is it with these awful hairstyles?

It may be difficult to do more traditionally fancy hairstyles with the engine, and simple styles would fit Orlais poorly.

I edited my first comment before I saw this, but just to say it: I think they could have then done fancy up-dos, like what we have on Josephine. You could take the same space her hair style takes up and do a bunch of variations with it. Make it look like its got braids, make it look like it has jewels in it, or flowers, or cheese or a chihuahua or w/e the Orlesians are doing this year.

Bioware needs to get a hold of some decent barbers, haistylists and hairdressers...I am sure there must be some in Edmonton...I mean their hair designs are simply awful...Especially if you compare their hair designs to what we have been seeing in other next-generation RPG like the upcoming Witcher 3.

Yes I agree. I'm still waiting for them to do a nice mohawk. A mohawk for a dalish elf would have been fantastic.

The artists made a choice at some point to go that route instead of more traditional styles for the setting (or the fancy hair styles seen in some concept art). And that's partially what some people in this thread are questioning.

Concept art is not indicative of the games actual lore or 'Traditional Styles' that are practiced in Orlais.

This is concept art for Chewbacca:

This does not mean Star Wars "Got the Traditional Wookie Hairstyles wrong" because they went with this:

Have you actually seen all the hairstyles for every race in Inquisition? Do you know how many options there actually are? Beside maybe the female Qunari I've haven't seen a lack of variety.

I have seen what they have shown, yes. Sort of why I used the word irksome, because I'm not actually too bothered. I would have preferred a "larger" variety of hairstyles, similar to the amount of choices available in Dragon's Dogma/Dark Arisen as an example.

I like it and I am used to seeing hairstyles like that in Historical movies for example.

This bald around the head hairtsyle was common amongst eastern european nobility, during late medieval and renaissance.

Seriously though, Who would choose to have that on their characters?

I did.

On my templar extremist.

Who also happened to be a jester.

It was fun.

OP: I agree with you-the hairstyles are bad. I actually had never seen a woman with a Marine haircut before, so I assumed the blonde woman in the trailer was a man at first.

But, oh well. They're not changing them now.

Really? I guess you haven't seen a lot of women then. There ARE women with Marine haircuts and there's nothing wrong about that.

By "traditional for the setting" I meant hair more in the vein of what we see in DAO and DA2. I mentioned concept art hair as an additional option to that.

No wonder there are practicly no characters with long hair. Not to mention the number of bald characters or characters with full head covering headwear.

The hair in DAI, so far, looks painfully awfull in comparison to the rest of the graphics. But its not just that... majority of those hairstyles are just hideous.

Them to have the same hairstyles they have had in all art depicting Orlesian fashion before now?

Fashion isn't static, my friend.

Wow. In the hairstyle images [shown above], there are eight cropped short cuts for male elves depicted, each only with subtle differences. Too many of those eight are similar enough to have been minimized in favor of truer variety.

Also we ultimately get less options per gender than in past games. The hairstyles are all unisex now, yes. But how much of a real option is the male patterned baldness hairstyle for a female Inquisitor? Its technically an option, yes, but its not one someone is likely to actually use. I'd argue that makes it less of a legitimate option in the first place.

A significant portion of the game is taking place in Orlais, which is culturally different from Kirkwall and Ferledan so a difference in hairstyles is of no surprise.

For reasons not yet known demons spilling from the Rift targeted barbers for murder and possessions to a degree utterly disproportionate to the rest of the population. Fade-specialists believe that a possible reason for this is the massive decline in troop morale as more and more people sport hideous haircuts.

I've seen quite a few women and I have never seen a woman with a high and tight. Where you live, are there numerous women walking around with their hair shaved on the bottom with a little tuft on top?

I seriously doubt it.

FWIW, I'm not denying that any woman, ever, could have a high and tight, just that it's very uncommon. Just like if I saw someone wearing a dress-sure, occasionally men wear dresses, but 999 times out of 1000 if you see someone in a dress, it's a woman.

There is no arguing that Inquisition is hands down the best looking (and probably the best, period) game Bioware have ever made. And I have never been more excited for a game, like ever!

It looks like it is going to be an absolutely amazing game to play. They really did a wonderful job.

But the hair....Maker help us! Will they never get this to be even remotely acceptable???

In the interest of figuring out what people are looking for I will now post hairstyles from other games

Actually, I think the Inquisitor hairstyles (see the post at the top of page 2) deserve some fairly strong words, particularly since they're also to be applied to women. There's nothing like Josephine's hair, nothing I would call elaborate or even beautiful in a simple, no-nonsense way. Well, perhaps one or two are somewhat nice. The rest - it's all between "barely serviceable" and "butt-ugly", with a significant majority being the latter.

It's not going to be easy, if what I've heard about modding Frostbite is true. And anyway, it's not a good impression if it appears that mods are needed and the game isn't even out.

While you are absolutely entitled to your opinion, keep in mind that it is exactly that: your opinion. I personally think a lot of these hairstyles are awesome. It is clear that artists put a lot of their time in designing them. But like in all games, there are a few that I don't particularly like (and others might fancy them over the ones I judge are best). Also keep in mind that we haven't seen all of them, especially for female Inquisitors. I, for one, can't wait to see the full CC ingame to compare all the choices.

And who knows? Maybe they'll give us a few more hairstyles as a DLC once the game is out and they have some time to work on this instead of fixing bugs and making sure the game plays well. :)
