Think of it as an opportunity to implement a "CC improvement DLC (or FreeLC)" that combines a character re-creator and more hairstyle options!

I'd love gloriously long white hair for female Qunari like in that tarot card but whatever :P

Knowing EA and the fact that a lot of people have been annoyed by this and the default skyhold outfit. I wouldn't be suprised if they release a 'customization dlc' that focuses on adding more hairstyles and skyhold outfits to the game.

Joke's gotten old.

Yea, inclusion of those things in the game is a joke. My wallet almost died from laughter.

Actually there's only one missing from the left. And considering the two hairstyles before the last one are all small afros I would assume the last one is similar.

On the right side there are some missing, but I don't think it's more than five in total.

Are you certain that hair styles are shared across races? I suppose that makes it 5-6 missing hairstyles.

By the way I think the male dwarf in the cc demo is rocking the Alistair cut.

Not sure how background characters in a game that was obviously not completely finished are relevant to the topic.

I'm not sure if this has been confirmed or not, but why wouldn't it be? We've seen a lot of shared hairstyles between elves and humans so it wouldn't make sense to allow some and remove others. I would be pretty pissed off if there was a good hairstyle for elves but not humans. I think only the Qunari don't share the same hairstyles because of the horns (they have almost no hair actually).

And two of those missing hairstyles are these ones:

I don't think we've seen them in the CC videos. They look similar but they are not the same.

What bothers me is the lack of personality the hairs in Inquisition seem to have and the lack of braided hairstyles. It's such a typical medieval thing to have braids, it just annoys me that we only have one and it's being used by Scout Harding.

*snip*

This. The lack of variety in the buns and braids is what bothers me the most. From what we've seen, even Anora's iconic hairstyle is gone. The only style with some braiding is the Harding one.

Buns and braids are the easiest way to make longish hairdos that don't require any flowing animation and will not clip (if not made too long), so their scarcity is a bit puzzling to me. Here are some ideas what can be done with braiding (the models are kids, but many of those hairdos would just as easily work on adults):

Oh...the left one looks like the one in the dwarf demo (aka Alistair cut). It's a little thicker on the sides, but you can see the outcropping on the front.

This one. Alistair himself I think.

The right one is a little...er...too anime for me on male characters.

No matter... I'll probably default to the former on my first character.

I got to see some of the concept art for some of the hairstyles, and the guy who did them explained the reason behind a few of them which looked rugged, shaved, messy, and in some persons eyes "ugly", was that it was to add styles that would feel realistic and with the tone. You imagine most of the people who live in thedas wouldnt necessarily have available barbers (unless they're royalty or nobles) so you would probably have people cutting their own hair. Take Sera for example who does her own snipping, its messy by efficient for her because she doesn't want it getting in the way.

Other times it's the simple style of the society. Shaved sides and elaborate braids are just what becomes popular in some areas.

Sorry if it's not what you want, but in no time someone will upload new hair mods for you to use (if you use the pc anyways).

Personally I like many of the styles. I see them fitting in the world and already have some interesting ideas for how my inquisitor should look.

That's meant to be Alistair?

I'm sure there's some joke waiting to be made about how they all look so different. Oh, wait...

(Also, if that's the case then what would happen if your Alistair was made king and so had to give up his GW duties? I know

Spoiler
, but I can't really see him picking back up the old retconned Warden armor again.)

ETA: Forgot to say that the hairstyle looks okay (Hawke's seems better, I think), at least from the little we can make out of it here. Unfortunately, it's a bit too dark to be able to say much about textures.

I wish we had more than one done up braid that hinted at the possibility of very long hair. The lone ponytail available is very short and lank but I will probably pick that since the loose strands with it are the only wavy hair I've seen.

Well it looks like him. Compare him to the image in the novels for a good idea on his conceptual appearance. Remember this is a new engine.

Here:

Spoiler

This is likely him if he's still a Grey Warden. Some have speculated Stroud or even Hawke's sibling replaces him if he is King/Drunk/Dead. The last trailer (Hero of Thedas) shows Stroud rather than this Warden (which I assume is Alistair).

---

Anyway the point is that his hair is back and it's awesome so I'm content yay. Not like I ever used those other hairstyles :P

Although I did mod in the default hairstyle to allow its use for other presets. It's also available.

I personally find things like this that would be nice disappear importance wise after a short bit of game play.  90% of the game time the camera is zoomed out to the point that I can't get a good look at hair anyway, either that or i have a helm on.  Long hair would be nice even if only for cutscenes.  In most cases I would assume you could mitigate long hair clipping issues in a controlled environ like a convo or a cutscene, make the player wear their hair up in regular game play.

I just think that, okay, if you can't make long hair, at least have a wider variety of super short hairstyles. So many important NPCs having the same hairstyles just stands out.

And don't even get me started on how weird it is to see those sort of haircuts on Orlesians...

I think they have said that's not Alistair.  Or the PC warden.

I'm thinking it may be a placeholder for Hawke's sibling if they aren't a GW?  But that's not confirmed either, just my thought on it.

Man I wish my human inquisitor could rock Blackwall's hair/beard combo.

I've seen some decent beards, but it doesn't look like the hair will be possible.

Remember this is a new engine.

I seem to recall that the heavy upgrades to DA:O's engine were also (at least partially) responsible for the new looks (and accompanying comment from Alistair) in DAII.

As for the graphic novel illustration, I understand that handcrafted artwork will tend to look quite different from digital models. (For example, Alistair's nose on that cover looks much more bulbous than either of his appearances in the first two games, IIRC.)

And I suspect you're right about contingency plans depending upon Alistair's in-game status, which I think manages to throw the whole thing into further doubt, unfortunately.

Oh, well, three weeks to go! Can't wait to find out. ^_^

Of course drawings will look a little different. Isabela has like 30 different faces if you go by the novel :P . That's how comics roll.

It's simply a reference for what the new character designers may have looked at while designing DAI Alistair, being an official art of Alistair that is independent of the comics. He's not going to look very much like Alistair from DAO and DA2 which use the Eclipse engine.

By comparison, Leliana looks quite different in DAI despite being quickly identifiable. I trust Alistair will have the same effect on us.

ill add my voite that i hope its not. they totally biffed alistair's appearance in Da2 (I played with the generator and made a much better likeness); with the extra options in DAI I hope they managed to get closer to the DAO appearance

I don't mind the numerous shaved hairstyles, but the options seem awfully skewed. So far, we've only seen one braided hairstyle. One. Even simple ones, like Leliana's cute bob with a braid on the side, are gone. There's also only one proper ponytail option and one bun. No variety or imagination whatsoever.

The explanation that the designers aimed for the rugged "realistic" hair doesn't sound solid to me. I definitely like the idea that Sera cuts her own hair, but most people with no access to barbers wouldn't bother cutting it at all. That's one of the reasons why long hair was common in Middle Ages. Now, Thedas isn't the real world and they have their own fashion. I accept that. All I ask, is a little more variety.
