ill add my voite that i hope its not. they totally biffed alistair's appearance in Da2 (I played with the generator and made a much better likeness); with the extra options in DAI I hope they managed to get closer to the DAO appearance

it's literally impossible. DAO characters only look good within the confines of the engine.

Compare:

Spoiler

All three Leliana's look great for their respective engines.

The first looks very cartoony compared to the rest.

The second looks relatively waxy in comparison to the third.

The third looks the most human of all, but has different features. Look..her nose is slightly different and so is her facial structure.

This ignores the fact that Leliana has had the most consistent appearance throughout the games however, so she's probably the worst example I could have used.

We'll simply have to accept that DAI characters will look different. Assuming that new warden is Alistair, he looks good enough especially since we don't have an actual proper profile snapshot.

I don't mind the numerous shaved hairstyles, but the options seem awfully skewed. So far, we've only seen one braided hairstyle. One. Even simple ones, like Leliana's cute bob with a braid on the side, are gone. There's also only one proper ponytail option and one bun. No variety or imagination whatsoever.

The explanation that the designers aimed for the rugged "realistic" hair doesn't sound solid to me. I definitely like the idea that Sera cuts her own hair, but most people with no access to barbers wouldn't bother cutting it at all. That's one of the reasons why long hair was common in Middle Ages. Now, Thedas isn't the real world and they have their own fashion. I accept that. All I ask, is a little more variety.

Keep raising your concerns. They are already looking into potentially expanding the CC and adding a "mirror of transformation" for DAI sometime in the future.

It was a shock to see Vanilla Leliana.  She's been modded in my game for so long, hair and makeup mostly--facial structure is the same.  She translates well through all 3 engines.  So did Cullen for that matter.

Whoever made Alistair, Teagan and Zevran for DA2 should have been boiled in oil though.

My ladies, I still don't know what they will wear.  My dudes will probably sport the "Cullen" 'do.

Cullen would probably have been a better example. He looks similar in the first two games but quite different in the 3rd while maintaining the same identifiable "Cullen" quality.

I think that's why I was so puzzled about the (possible) identification of the Warden in the pic above as Alistair. Both Leliana and Cullen jumped out at me as familiar right off the bat, even accounting for (sometimes substantial) differences due to game engines, but I wouldn't have connected the Warden to Alistair on my own.

Hair has never been BioWare's strong point. They need to consider hiring someone who actually knows a thing about style and how to mesh AND texture it properly. :>

I didn't make the connection at first either.

Between the comic book art, the hair and its color, and Stroud (also looks slightly different) replacing him in Hero of Thedas... I put two and two together.

I could be entirely wrong, but it's plausible enough for me.

I can agree with that. Variety doesn't hurt, it is the spice of life....and game character customization.

I was disappointed myself to be honest after seeing the official customization after the art, because he had a lot of really cool interesting ideas that weren't used in the game. I recall seeing a few cool short hair styles for females ranging from punk to formal that didn't make it in game.

BioWare has been relatively "transparent" with its creative process. I'm sure a lot of other features got cut due to constraints. We can't really call them out on it.

Perhaps they were planning long flowing hair but had to cut it (hue hue hue) for now. They may introduce it in the future although it will obviously take time.

While it's understandable to feel "let down" after realizing that certain concepts were cut, I'd rather they keep sharing them all rather than avoiding doing so because they may irritate some people.

I'm actually more disappointed if that's Empress Celene than the fact that the inquisitor him/herself might be stuck with a bad hairstyle. An empress should not have such a terrible do.

This. I don't mind short hair. In previous games all my ladies had short hair (not that I had much choice in the matter anyway) so maybe that's why this time around I wanted something different. I don't want my Inquisitor to be bald (or nearly bald), and I don't want another short hair like Hawke's so that leaves just a few choices. They could add short/medium hair that still looked good on females. And they could most definitely make some decent updos that wouldn't cause clipping such as:

What bothers me is the lack of personality the hairs in Inquisition seem to have and the lack of braided hairstyles. It's such a typical medieval thing to have braids, it just annoys me that we only have one and it's being used by Scout Harding.

They actually had some pretty good hairstyles planned but for some reason gave up on them. I can understand why the long braid could be a problem, but not the other 3.

So true. No braided hairstyles, that simply sucks, and I looked forward so much to that thick braid on the female dwarf.

I don't think they're trying to be modern. The engine is just not great at hair, having been designed for military shooters, where buzz cut is the default. The unreal engine gave Bioware the same problems.

What does it matter, if they end up being modern anyway - and the worst kind of modern at that? I'm not expecting long hair (though I actually did expect it at some time after some of the published concept art and I think it's been an issue for so long that it's becoming silly) but a few braided hairstyles like DAO or DA2 had surely aren't too much to expect.

For a game that takes 200 hours to fully complete, you think they would have some time to put all kinds of customization options in it. If it mean putting it in future patches thats fine with me. I know the quanari could have used a few more considering theirs affects both horns and hair styles.

At least we can say that it has more options then the last two games.

Maybe they'll add them in later? Perhaps they exist in the game on NPCs that don't require much animation. We don't know yet.

I think they could be more transparent when it comes to character customization, because that's the part where players want to have the maximum amount of agency. They could, for example, introduce all the viable concept arts for the hairstyles and put them for a non-binding vote. The most popular ones might in some form appear in the game.

I know they make a huge amount of artwork that never reaches fans' eyes, not before the release of possible art books at least. Showing artwork to fans prior to making the CC would be a great way for Bioware to get all this feedback when it's still possible to make changes. If there's going to be some sort of customization related DLC, I really hope they base it partially on fan feedback.

The braids would have been nice.  I don't know why they removed the "Anora" 'do for one.  It was a staple on my female warrior.  For my mages, I used that little bob with multiple braids (Oriana's hair).  2 styles I liked.

At least some of the styles are interesting (hard to judge from these pics).  Again, it's the texture that worries me, not the hairdo itself.

I personally would like more long hair options for both genders, HOWEVER: I can see where Dragon Age is coming from with the limited styles. For one, it can be difficult to make hairstyles not ghost into clothing and helmets, etc. At the same time, they want to make a game that's more realistic than fantasy. In a time of war, people don't often care about their hairstyle. (But on that note, if they don't care about their hairstyle, wouldn't their hair be growing out?)

Whatever. We'll get what we get. It's definitely more than previous Dragon Age games, so I'll be happy. Besides, to me, the game content is a lot more important than hairstyles. Plus, we have complete control over eye color (save for heterochromia) and makeup! They added so many new things in the game, that I'm extremely excited!

That's unfair. They have worked tirelessly for an extra year and a month to deliver these 200 hours of gameplay. You can't really expect them to implement details and customization for everything can you? It's not like they had free time.

But yes, future patches are definitely going to happen. We can hope that they add CC options. Raise your concerns (politely :P ) and I'm sure they will add it for consideration. They already are, I believe.

While this would be nice, it would set a precedent of players directly deciding what goes into the game. I'm not sure BioWare wants this.

I'm sure if there were images of proposed 'dos it was something they were attempting to render.  I'm fairly sure no one in the dev department said "Nahhh, we don't need this.  Let's just toss it out."  I'm sure they had to have tried to do it, but found it unfeasible.

True, I suppose that was a bit harsh, even knowing how much respect I have for Bioware. I was just joking a bit. I'm more impressed at how amazing the whole customization process is anyways. Hair styles are always a bonus though.
