Meredith is probaply best there have been so far.

Zathrian was pretty good and hard to beat too.

Sister/Mother Petrice has been most annoying one XD

Since I sided with the Architect I don't think I can count him as villain.

Dragon Age has some great villains.  Loghain and the Arishok are my top two.  The Arishok especially, my Hawke and him always have this understanding between the two of us.  We respect each other greatly, and Hawke agrees with the Arishok's decision...but Kirkwall is her/his home, and she'll defend it to the last breath from him.

I also loved Meredith once you get to know her backstory.  Makes her far more compelling.

Adrian for the simple fact that she pulled something worse than Anders without the whole "A spirit forced me to it" excuse. Anders caused a mass murder event in Kirkwall. Adrian forced the hand of the BIGGEST CIRCLE IN THEDAS. They still had a vote later on but I mean come on...

She also stabbed a guy then FRAMED IT ON HER FRIEND.

I hate Adrian with an absolute passion.  She is everything wrong with the world.

Arl Howe.

The writers showed how a seemingly "normal" man that wanted power and money, completely void of moral, compassion and good - could be written so well as to not make the antagonist boring despite his rather simplistic concept. He was a cruel, greedy and malevolent backstabbing psycho.

But did he make any excuses for it? No.
He went for what he wanted in a cruel unforgiving world and almost succeeded too.

I just think Arl Howe was perfectly written and voice acted as showcasing the worst of humanity in a believable way.

I think from a certain twisted perspective though, he might have felt he was doing a good thing.

For one, Bryce was sent to Orlais on Cailan's behalf. This would have alarmed some Fereldens like Loghain and Howe, for good reason.

Secondly, we find out from Nathaniel that Arl Howe's dad left joining the Grey Wardens (and died without him knowing). He must've built up a lot of bitterness, feeling abandoned, and maybe blamed the Wardens. Another reason for him to side with Loghain's mad plan to kill them off.

Can Anders count as an Antagonist or is he strictly an anti-hero? I'd add him too.

I think he is strictly an anti-hero mainly because an antihero is often driven by impure, but sympathetic, motives. Vengeance is a big one. Who among us hasn’t wanted revenge even slightly? We might not agree with it, but we sympathize. A villain is driven by impure, but unsympathetic, motives—power for the sake of power, for example.

@Muspade:  Considering I would have attacked and imprisoned Anders after I discovered he was helping siphon mages out of the city - and then I would have killed him if the game let me to stop him from using his dirty bomb - I consider him a villain.

There is nothing about his actions I do not consider vile.

Isnt vengance and justice just an argument in hermeneutics / Interpretation?

If something is justice or vengance is 100% reliant on the subjective belief of the one doing it isnt it?

For example: If someone killed by sister and I killed the killer, I would call it justice while someone else might call it vengance.

That doesn't really count does it? If you were in Thedas mages would call you a villain for thinking this way. It doesn't matter what we consider. From a neutral point of view its decided if someone is protagonist, antagonist, anti-hero etc...

On a side note an antihero is often the underdog. Even when we don’t agree with the antihero, we can find ourselves cheering for underdogs. It’s hard to cheer for a villain who has wealth and power and all he needs to defeat the hero/antihero. Anders lives in sewers, has no dime or standing etc... I'm not saying go cheer for him, he simply meets all criteria for an anti-hero.

1. The Archdemon: Most people see this as an angry, hard to kill dragon, but to me, he/she is a beautiful parable. As per myth, it was the dragon gods (and demons) who whispered to humans in their sleep and "corrupted" them into turning their faces away from the Maker and worshipping them, instead. Then, the DarkSpawn happened. Now, a beautiful sleeping Dragon god sleeps, as darkspawn seek them out, corrupting them into archdemons like they were once corrupted. Part karma, part irony, very nice.

2. Branka: I feel any dwarf who is not willing to go to insane, even immoral and unethical lengths just to get respite from the constant onslaught of darkspawn is not very realistic. That is why I find it hard to play dwarf. (Just my perspective. If your dwarves are different, more power to you). Sacrificing everything you love to find something to protect your people would ordinarily be considered a heroic act, but hers is seen is treachery. Very nicely done.

3. The architect: He is, in many ways, a freedom fighter, a revolutionary, yearning to enlighten and free his people. Of course his means are terrifying and highly questionable, but what do you expect from someone who has never known the civilizing influence of society? Besides, there is a lot very intriguing about him. Where did he come from, why is he free, how did he come to think the way he does?

4. Loghain/Meredith: I think your hatred can blind you to greater threats, and Loghain/Meredith come from the same place. A past experience that leads to paranoia, and a position of power where that paranoia has the ability to affect many lives. I prefer Meredith because female villains are rare and usually terribly done, but I feel both of them are not just antagonists but morals as to the travails of bad judgment, and making decisions on the basis of fear, not facts.

5. Jowan: He was the most realistic villain I have ever seen. He was a whiny, entitled brat, but who wanted the things everyone does. I loved and hated him in equal measure.

6. Kelder: *full body shudder* I don't think any villain can be as creepy as someone who abuses kids. Possibly the villain that made me feel the most icky.

Villains who I don't marvel over, but who were still awesome.

1. Howe: He was brilliantly done, and triggers visceral hate, but his motivations are predictable- greed and power. He is wonderfully acted, but he doesn't achieve hall of fame in the Beer's book of villainy.

2. Arishok: Very quotable and with great art direction, one wanted to BE the Arishok, he was that awesome. But for a disciplined army general, he was kind of emotionally tremulous. Maybe it is the psychologist in me, but when I see the Qunari, I don't think disciplined, or strong willed, or powerful. I think of the psychological state of a 14-15 year old human with their "no" and "you will never understand". I always expected the Arishok to have insomnia, pig out on ice-cream and write journal entries that humans are "so immachur" and "just don't get it". Again, very personal perspective, and I respect yours if it is different.

3. Broodmother: I just felt sorry for her. Any feelings of villainy or creepiness were completely overcome by that sadness. Imagine losing your humanity and becoming a breeding vessel to that which is most wicked. It is just horrid.

4. Any of the eebil templars/blood mages: Seriously dudes. Chill.

If someone says they are not intertwined they are delusional. The governments try to find balance and lean towards "Justice" but as a Lawyer I'm telling you sometimes its simply systematical vengeance, not justice. In the end like many things about humans and humanity its ultimately subjective and undecided. The governmental Justice simply tries to avoid more crime by protecting the people from criminals and also protecting the criminal from people. Its the easy way out.

Omg, I thought I'm the only Loghain fan. Because in the the comments everybody say ,, OMFG, I want to see Alistair!" or ,,Leliana pls, pls" etc. nobody said Loghain.

:( He is one of my favorites. When he became "sane" again: He is tough, but has heart. He is loyal, brave etc.... He is a really good character in the series. I like Arishok too, but I can't explain. I just like that type. I like Flemeth in the DA if she has a 30 year old body hmmm  , but not just for that. I like a little Cauthrien too a little.

On a danger scale I will place it as such (this scale is determined by their knowledge and ability to use it, their overall power and level of direct threat, and whether or not they are/were intentionally malevolent).

1. The Archdemon, Awakened by the Architect and able to take hold over the long dormant and reproducing darkspawn the Archdemon possessed enough intelligence to assess a battlefield while having an army that could reproduce nearly without end and maintains itself through destruction while never having to deal with dissenting politics.

2. The Architect, the anti hero or second primary antagonist of Dragon Age Awakening as well as being the antagonist in other novels, he has learned how to track down arch demons, awaken dark spawn and bring them to a new cognitive level of intelligence while only ever dealing with a few groups that adjusted poorly to the silence. This darkspawn is an currently anomalous threat and could raise an intelligent and ruthless army if need be.

3. Corypheus, another anomalous threat in the same category as The Architect, however it is arguable between which place either should share, capable of indoctrinating grey wardens and dark spawn alike this ancient (tevinter magister?) darkspawn only needs to be in a general area to have his will carried out and may transfer to the nearest grey warden or darkspawn upon death.

4. The Mother. A maddened darkspawn that was well known for being able to create darkspawn broods known as "the Children" that attack friend and foe alike, she has earned a spot at number 4.

5. Flemeth, ancient and seemingly all knowing; this mysterious, shape shifting witch of the wilds has earned a spot at number 5.

6. The Reapers of Amgarrak, need I say more?

7. The Arishok, carrying one third of the will of the Qun this leader determined duty for his subordinates and carried it out. Killing the Viscount and taking Kirkwall if the Champion would not have interceded would have been a small step or a minor accomplishment in his eyes.

8. Loghain Mac Tir, this Teryn due to his great distaste for Orlesians betrayed the Grey Wardens, left his king for dead, and attempted to seize hold of Fereldan during a blight with an iron grip. If not for the Warden or Alistair (which Alistair proceeds kill him anyway if you played the darkspawn chronicles) fereldan would have fallen and the dragon age we know would be very different.

9. Knight Commander Meredith; after the viscount's death and the corruption of the idol she lost most of her mental faculties after years of being exposed to its maddening properties she attempted to wrestle control of Kirkwall from its inhabitants.

10. Duke Prosper. If he had been successful in taking the scroll, reading it, or even inquiring as to its exact nature; Par Vollen would lose many of its eyes as they are systematically gouged out in country by country. A good Orlesian noble and an associate of Empress Celene the release of this list would have jeopardized many lives.

As for my favorite antagonists however, I must give it to The Architect, The Arishok, and Duke Prosper because all of them felt bound by duty or overall betterment in order to proceed. They aren't intentionally malevolent (excepting the architect who really didn't try to be passive), but because of their natures and skewed vision must be met with conflict.
