He said personal firearm.

I just cleared up a potential misunderstanding via explaining what "guns" means. That said, the OP said guns. So that's what I am talking about.

Cannons are guns.

Guns can be cannons, pistols, rifles, etc. pp.. It's a category, not a specific type.

This thread appears to be about the player character using guns. Cannons are not exactly something one person can man.

There are hand cannons though. But like I said in an earlier post not in the foreseeable future. Unless Dragon Age spins off into the next Age I don't see it happening.

Given who controls the powder and what they mainly seem to use it for ships and fortifactions Another race would have to get their hands on the things, then spend quite sometime making hand guns and rifiles viable.

A crossbow and repeating crossbow still beats out most early guns and yes even in reload time and maintince.

Thread is about guns. I don't see where the OP specified manportable guns. So that means all kinds of guns. In that regard, I commented. If you want to talk specifically about small arms go ahead, but evidently not everyone is convinced that is what this topic is about.

Well, gunpowder has been around for 2000 years, used first by the Chinese and then by Arabs for a long time yet guns are new compared to gunpowder time of usage

So no, we don't have to have guns anytime soon, we could but even if 500 in-game years passes without guns it won't be a plot/world setting hole or anything

There is a reason why some cannons had to be bolted down, even something Iron bulls size would be thrown back.

Templar Red Behemoth could use Cannons as Side Arms in order to fight the Qunari who after unlocking gunpowder quickly developed Arishock Attack Gyrocopters.

At the most, it would have to be crude blunderbusses and flintlock pistols, but those things would be inferior to something like a repeating crossbow, or even a regular crossbow for that matter. The only way I could really see this sort of thing working is if the franchise eventually fast-forwards to an era where technological development begins to catch up, and some of the old ways of life go the way of the dodo. I have to say, I kind of enjoy the thought of seeing a more dynamic Thedas throughout the ages, but with only two games left in the franchise and plenty of stories left to tell in the more current era, I guess we'll have to do without.

The only way I think personal firearms will show up in Dragon Age is if when the Qunari invade Thedas again, they have developed them for the invasion.

Saying "We should be able to use guns sometime soon." sort of implies that we are talking about small arms.

In any case, the Qunari aren't letting anyone else get ahold of their powder anytime soon. Even if the other nations of Thedas acquire the means to make gunpowder of their own, it would probably be restricted to cannons for a while, and any small arms that got developed would be inferior to bows for a fairly long time.

No matter how well any culture guards their technology, other cultures will replicate it.

One of my favorite fantasy worlds has guns available (Warhammer Fantasy) so I wouldn't be opposed to it.

But I think you'd sooner get lyrium based magi-tech.

It depends isn't the land they are based in more humid and jungle like, not the idea setting to devolpe firearms in for personal side arms. Spears, and bows are more the way to go for range combat.

Admittedly, this is something I would consider more a rumor than a guarantee, so I wouldn't take it as gospel. From what I understood, there were 5 games total to comprise the franchise, but it could just end up being one more beyond Inquisition.

You know I'm kinda surpised we haven't seen blowguns yet considering the culture of the race that has gun powder, that is what I would like to see more then guns.

I'd love to see muskets added. I don't think it's that much of a stretch for the DA universe considering the Qunari seem to have had cannon / gunpowder for a while.
