Thedas has already made use of gunpowder and explosives. We should be able to use guns sometime soon.

Please no. No, no, no and no...

Yah, no.  I appreciate the thought, but...   I'll keep my high fantasy, high fantasy.  I'll keep my urban fantasy (ME), urban fantasy.

Never the tween shall meet, if I have anything to say about it.

Though if we do get cannons in a more Qun centered game. I really hope they have an organ gun. That said, I want spears, halbards, pole-axes, crossbows much more then guns.

If the next game focuses on the Tevinter Qunari war we might have a basic gun. But really magic > Guns.
for this game though...NO.

They've had...a form of gunpowder...but we have no idea if that's even how it works. We know that the dwarves are capable of making lyrium explode, but that's probably super expensive and extremely unstable. The Qunari have their own formula, but its a huge secret and likely isn't as simple as...gunpowder...since every other nation is probably clambering to figure it out....

Guns in Dragon Age would be idiotic as well...and we've seen what it did to Fable...

Really, guns aren't as bad as everyone thinks.  They can be done tastefully, if done right.  Final Fantasy 11 was able to use certain types of guns that were actually pretty cool.  The reason they were used initially were for the Rangers (ranged specialists in Bow, Crossbow and Guns) for specific reasons.  With Wyrms, they were weaker to bullets than arrows or bolts.  Each type of creature in game had strengths and weaknesses.  The system they use is pretty amazing, it's insane!  It makes sense though with those crazy tough dragon scales protecting the dragons.

The guns used weren't the modern day type of guns either.  They were very specific to time frame, but modern for the time, if you know what I mean.  I'm not saying Dragon Age needs guns by any means.  Bows and crossbows are just fine.  I'm just pointing out that it's not as bad as everyone thinks.  Now if we're talking about modern day guns, well, it's just not what some call "lore" friendly and it just doesn't fit into the game.

Honestly, I don't even use a bow as a rogue in DA.  I enjoy the dual daggers and the abilities way more than playing the archer role.  Though I will say, archers in DA are much more effective in DA2 than DA:O.  I haven't really seen too much on DA:I archers.

Well, qunari use guns. given how bioware wants to reach to a "wider" audience, they can develop their own gears of war version with qunaris. At least they already have the physique lol.

Maybe we'll get guns but not for a while. The Qunari have only managed to create large ship bound weapons so it will take a while longer to downgrade to man-portable weapons. I don't think we'll see it in the Dragon Age, maybe 50-60 years down the track with the Blackpowder/Thunder Age

Less shooty, more stabby, please.

More "stab,kill kill!" action
no firearm can surpass the charisma of the good'ol murder knife though

Guns in Dragon Age would get us one tiny step closer to Overworld. Then my Warden can have an Automag and she'll be that much more like Caine.

I see no problems with this idea at all.

And here I was expecting an in depth lecture on the history of gun powder and firearms and their effect on Europe. Silly me.  :pinched:

And here I was expecting an in depth lecture on the history of gun powder and firearms and their effect on Europe. Silly me.  :pinched:

Meh, small arms took forever to become an entrenched, dominant, unchallenged part of the battlefield; shock tactics involving pike-armed infantry were still astoundingly effective even into the eighteenth century. On the other hand, artillery had an almost instant impact, sparking what many historians refer to as the "Military Revolution", one of the few epochal paradigm shifts in the nature of warfare that altered the way European states, societies, and economies worked forever.

The Military Revolution was caused by the fact that cannons could demolish the stone masonry fortifications of Europe in record time and with essentially zero countermeasures. In order to counter this, engineers began to construct fortresses on the so-called trace Italienne model, which had some neat hallmarks. Henceforth, effective forts incorporated gently sloping earthen mounds to bolster the stonework, and had projecting bastions, ravelins, etc. on which to site their own artillery to keep enemy siege batteries at bay. No longer could an enemy simply stand off at bombardment range and pummel a relatively undefended wall at a perpendicular angle. These forts were so much vaster than previous works that they required a much larger number of soldiers not merely to garrison them, but to besiege them as well. The ways in which states went about raising these extra men were the cause of that aforementioned societal paradigm shift.

Problematically, though, the kind of damage a cannon can do to an enemy is already kind of in the setting in the form of magic. Yet magical methods of attack did not force a similar change in fortress construction styles. Ostagar and Ath Velanis would not pass muster with the likes of Peruzzi or Vauban. Perhaps this is partially due to other aspects of the Thedosian setting, like magical stonework or materials or what have you. But regardless, that shift in construction styles didn't happen with magic and it hasn't even happened despite the existence of Qunari siege batteries for the past two-plus centuries. So there's no reason to suspect that the setting will incorporate it later.

It's a fantasy setting, created by writers who aren't academic historians. (Which is perfectly fine!) Academic history, therefore, is of no predictive value when discussing it.

Does that pass muster for your "in-depth lecture"? :P

Those pics are kool but that is one of the few films I have watched where I decided to turn it off before the end. Usually even if I am not enjoying a film I will watch the rest of it to see if it improved but for this one I had seen all I wanted to see about 30 minutes into it.

I guess that little story isn't really relevant though.  :P
