Coming from a family with a strong magical heritage, my Hawke can sympathize with Merrill's internal struggle to use her powers wisely. Despite her sweet disposition he can also admire her drive to restore a part of her culture. Let us be perfectly frank here - Arlathan is not exactly getting built off screen as time goes on. Someone has to do something, and her commitment to her goal is something even a warrior like my Hawke can respect. They can both find comfort in each other as they pursue their own agendas and I think that is a powerful thing.

Definitely Anders every time. At first I loved how funny and sarcastic, yet caring he was. He changed during the game and not necessarily for the better but I just sympathized with him so much hnnngggg I wish there was something I could have done to help him.. I think I even love him more than Alistair. Would have never imagined that to be possible lol.

Frankly, the male choices between "broody elf" and "broody mage" didn't thrill me, so I went with Isabela, and would probably go with Merrill in a hypothetical second playthrough.

Male Hawke and Anders. I don't have a single playthrough where I don't romance him. I agree with his views on mage freedom and templars, and his struggles with himself and trying to change things really make me feel and care for him. I also find him incredibly adorable.

I'm sure Isabela is nice if you spend a lot of time with her... But I like Varric too much to leave him behind. Besides, when I do bring her along, I don't always agree with her. So, in the end, she's always a temporary companion who ends up betraying Hawke and running off for good, exposing countless of people in Kirkwall to the wrath of the Arishok because of her selfishness.

Broody is a pretty good word to describe Fenris, but Anders? His brains are scrambled eggs. I like a little crazy in my IL's, but he is just too far out there. Plus... ya know... Fade cooties. Eww... Bad Justice. NO!.... No....Bad.
