After Lothering, I mean.  Mine is...

1. Redcliffe

2. Stone Prisoner

3. Circle Tower

4. Urn of Sacred Ashes

5. Redcliffe Chanter's Board quests (seriously)

6. Orzammar

7. Flemeth's Grimoire

8. Brecelian Forest

9. Denerim, etc.

Other companion quests are in there somewhere.

I just remember during my first playthrough being like "I feel like I've spent half the game just trying to speak to the arl.  Wasn't this supposed to be my first objective?!"  I'd started thinking that I might be too late.  Redcliffe Castle is harder than you might expect.  Even after giving Morrigan "Heal", I was still chugging potions left and right.  Those damn mabari.  I hate Overwhelm!  The revenant used to give me hell, because for the first couple of playthroughs, I didn't know you could open the gate!

My usual order for the main quests:

1. Stone Prisoner
2. Circle Tower
3. Orzammar
4. Brecillian Forest
5. Return to Ostagar
6. Redcliffe
7. Sacred Ashes

I find Sacred Ashes just works better as a sort of home-stretch finale sort of quest, with the whole Gauntlet test of faith and all the origin callbacks. I played a Dalish, and the encounter with Tamlen's reflection thingy during the gauntlet is much more poignant when you already know his fate from earlier and his 'You won't see me again' is actually true.

Always try to do them in the ideal order to avoid anything being over or under leveled, which thankfully also works as the most logical order for my main character, so...

1. Redcliffe

2. Circle Tower

3. Urn of Sacred Ashes

4. Nature of the Beast

5. Orzammar

6. Denerim quests and all the rest

The logic basically goes, "Hey, we should have someone powerful on our side, let's go see Eamon... woops, he be near corpse status, welp, let's go find dis Genitivi fellow but maybe we should stop by the Mage's Circle on the way to ask for their help... oh fuuu, whole place has gone to ****, damn, can't leave em like dis... alright, back to that Genitivi and magical ashes bsns... k, done dealing with dragon blood suckers, let's go recruit some elves... oh cute, they need help too... alright, done trolling Cammen, let's go to the small and bearded people village, maybe I can actually just relax th... nope, gotta do **** for em too"

I don't bother with Return to Ostagar anymore, Cailan can rot. Stone Prisoner and Warden's keep get done when passing nearby said areas during the main travels.

Circle Tower
Wardens Keep
Stone Prisoner
Redcliffe
Brecillian Forest
Go see Genetivi
Return to Ostagar
Haven
Orzammar
Back to Redcliffe
I usually get the information from Lothering that Eamon is sick & just think he is not priority cause he could be dead so I try to get allies that are reliable but a certain character ambushes you that makes me seem that Eamon can help if he is not dead.

I used to do them in a random order, but now I usually do:

1. Nature of the Beast (my main Warden is Dalish, so it seems appropriate to go to her own people first)

2. Broken Circle

3. The Stone Prisoner

4. A Paragon of Her Kind

5. The Arl of Redcliffe

6. The Urn of Sacred Ashes

Then I do companion and remaining side quests I didn't do while visiting some areas for main quests, and right before the Landsmeet I do Return to Ostagar and Warden's Keep.

The order doesn't really matter, but Broken Circle is my first stop. Just cause there are a lot of free Attribute points. Not mention Wynne (assuming you don't kill her) is the best healer in the game.

Lazy!TSM copy/pastas some nonsense she wrote in the the last thread about this:

I don't have a set path, but I usually do something like

  • Kinloch Hold (since it's pretty close to Lothering and I'd rather not deal with Alistair's daddy thing right off the bat and I want to have the mages all lined up for the next arc AND the Fade stat boosts I'm an awful metagame-y person yes I am)
  • Redcliffe (Again because of location/travel. Sometimes I swap Redcliffe and the Circle.)
  • Honnleath (again with the proximity)
  • Sacred Ashes (stupid running from one end of the map to the other and back again that makes no sense) with
  • Warden's Keep (somewhere in the middle of all the SA running around)
  • RTO (on the way to the werewolves, and with just Alistair and Dog in the party)
  • Brecilian Forest
  • Orzammar (sooooo far away)
  • Denerim/Landsmeet/endgame (once again with the ridiculous mappy back and forth)

Last time out, though, I did

  • Kinloch Hold (annulment)
  • Warden's Keep (Redcliffe avoidance)
  • Redcliffe (lots of bad stuff happened)
  • Honnleath
  • Sacred Ashes (all the ridiculous running from one end of the map to the other!)
  • RTO (just Alistair and Dog in the party because that's how I roll)
  • Orzammar (always sooooo far away)
  • Brecilian Forest
  • endless endgame blah blah blah

Where I go first depends a lot on what origin I'm playing... my Tabris Wardens always make straight for Denerim after Lothering. My Mahariel headed for the Dalish. I play mages a lot, so going to Kinloch Hold right away makes sense for most of them. Only poor Cousland has nowhere special to go. *sad face*

Broken Circle

The Arl of Redcliffe

The Stone Prisoner

A Paragon of Her Kind

Nature of the Beast

Return to Ostagar

Warden's Keep

Urn of Sacred Ashes

Sometimes I mix it up on different playthroughs and origins.

I will usually first go to Denerim to grab up the Trial of Crows, so that way I don't have to do a lot of backtracking to go kill the guys I need to in Orzammar and the camp of Tal'Vashoth(or however its spelled)

1. Broken Circle

2. Orzammar

3. Redcliffe

4. Stone Prisoner

5. Ostagar

6. Nature of the Beast

7. Warden's Keep

8. Urn of Sacred Ashes

Basically what I am doing is going in a big circle around the map so I don't have to do a lot of backtracking. Some times I will go recruit Shale before heading to Orzammar, but not often. And on my current play through I went to Redcliffe first. But more often than not, its in the above order

I used them to do in a random order too or depending on the origins... with one exception... The Deep Roads.. I hate them... They make me depressive.. and they make me feel boxed in. .. After a while I have always to go back on the surface to see the sky...so, that's the main quest I'm doing always at last. :D
Yep, I'm a tree-hugger. ;D

I usually do the circle tower first either that or redcliffe.  Or redcliffe first and then broken circle.  I leave urn of sacred ashes 'til the end 'cause I like to finish with that.  Then I use to do nature of the beast but now I like to do that latter because of the revenants.

Has changed over the years. Current third re-play through has followed the same rough order.

Lothering THEN

1. Redcliffe
2. Broken Circle (skipped the Fade this time even though it's one of my favourite sections of the story).
3. Meet and Greet the Dalish in the Brecillian Forest (savour that section like a fine wine)
4. Return to Ostagar
5. Exorcise Connor
6. Nature of the Beast
7.'Clean up Denerim' side quests OR Redcliffe chantry board quests OR The Stone Prisoner
8. Wardens Keep (the location disappears from my game on two previous playthroughs taking my characters antique crossbow and Morrigan's staff with them?
9. Denerim side quests OR Mages Circle (if I can be bothered) OR Blackstone Irregulars OR a selected sidequest(s)
10. Urn of Sacred Ashes (flipping Drakes are tough never mind 'Andraste reborn' snorting itself sick on top of that blinking plateau)
11. Orzammar

2. Circle Tower

3. Urn of Sacred Ashes

4. Soldiers Peak

5. Brecelian Forest

6. Stone Prisoner

7. Return To Ostagar

8. Flemeth's Grimoire

9. Orzammar

10. Denerim, etc.

Side Quests are sprinkled throughout.

I always do Orzamar last as it's my least favorite of all the quests. Something about being in the Deep Roads just pisses me off, I'd make a terrible Grey Warden.

1. Circle

2. Stone Prisoner

3.  Redcliffe.

4. Soldier's Peak.

5. Sacred Ashes.

*intermission: murder an old lady on the behalf of "some kind of sneaky witch-thief"*

6. Breciilian Forest.

7. Orzammar and the Deep Roads

8. Return to Ostagar

9. Landsmeet

I generally do the Denerim and side-quests along the way.

These first 3 in varying order:

1. Redcliffe

2. Circle Tower

3. Stone Prisoner

Followed by:

4. Short jaunt to Denerim to pickup a bunch of sidequests

5. Orzammar

From there I mix it up as I want.

I do Orzammar early on to get Oghren and fill out the party for the rest of the journey, in my first playthrough I did Orzammar last and it felt like Oghren was just some last minute tagalong for the endgame rather then an actual companion with more meaning and actual character connection, since then I've made filling out the party a priority regardless of RP when doing a playthrough so I can feel like I'm building a connection between characters over an accumulation of conversations and adventures rather then simply picking up a drunk dwarf, dumping a pile of alchoholic drinks on him and declaring him a friend at the last minute.

Redcliffe

Urn of Sacred Ashes-my favorite

Orzammar

I don't mind running all over the map so side quests,DLC's,and Companions quests are liberally sprinkled throughout

In my current playthrough I am playing a Dalish mage (thanks to a very lovely mod).

After Lothering, I thought it made sense to head for the Circle. A Dalish mage would want to get her hands on as much magic as possible and the Gray Wardens have a license to steal in that regard. Also Sally really likes her skill and xp bonuses. And I use the 'Skip the Fade' mod, so the Broken Circle quest doesn't take a lot of time.

After being most victorious, saving the Circle and recruiting Wynne, it's time to recruit Shale. So we go to Honnleath, solve a puzzle and defeat a desire demon. For some reason skimpily clad purple women with horns do very little for me. But I get a funny hat and some other nice loot. On the way there we encounter a meteor that fell from the sky. We collect some metal and move on.

Then it's time for Avernus, but before we get there, a really attractive elf ambushes us. I recruit him and Zevran becomes a member of our merry band (it's another mod, that gives you Zevran early). We clear out Soldier's Peak. Being a mage and interested in blood magic, I spare Avernus. Hope he cooks up something useful before he finally dies!

With a storage chest in hand, a starmetal sword and another friendly merchant, it's time to go home. Kind of.

Something is really wrong with my fellow Dalish, altho' their greeting is warm enough. And it isn't just the fact that they are not my clan. Zathrian is really old and then there's the matter of all those werewolves. But we defeat them, defeat Zathrian and get him to end the curse. All is well.

Now it's Denerim time. We do all the side quests. All of them. Every last one that is available. We have an enlightening discussion with Waylon and speak with Sten again. A quick visit to Lake Calenhad and we have a lead on the mythical Urn of Sacred Ashes and on Sten's sword.

Nothing to do for it, but visit Orzammar. Faryn is squirrelly but fesses up. Both candidates seem off, but Zevran points out that the support for Harry is a bit soft. We back Bhelen, do a meet and greet with some phony papers and kill a whole lot of outlaws. Oghren shows up, gets recruited and sent to camp. We do Dagna's quest and Godwin's quest at this point.

Now it is dragon killing time. I make a lot of top tier lyrium potions, health poultices and warmth balms. Then we go to Haven, kill all the friendly villagers and cultists, kill the drakes, slay the dragon and solve some puzzles.

We return to Denerim and the nice man makes us some very nice armour.

After that, it's time to finish Orzammar. Which we do. We finish all the quests and side quests, concluding with Shale's.

Lastly it's off to Redcliffe to kill zombies. Which is trivial inasmuch as I am a blood magic using arcane warrior armed with a fully runed Topsider's Honor. Wynne heals the villagers, Shale attracts angry zombies and Morrigan helps with the really big spells (Go go spell combos!)

Foes defeated and Arl cured, we head to Denerim and everlasting fame and glory. Alistair will try to dump me, but as I prudently hardened him (Did I mention I really hate the dialogue for that?) he will fail. We will shack up whilst he marries Anora.

There's a fair amount of meta gaming going on here. My fave bits are storming the circle, the Denerim side quests and Haven. My least fave bits are the Fade, most of the Deep Roads and Redcliffe. From a role playing standpoint, my Dalish mage is interested in Circle magic, the other Dalish and city elves, in that order. Human nobles do not concern her at all and her training is that they are to be avoided. The dwarves are interesting and obviously would make powerful allies, but their politics is byzantine and confusing.

After Lothering, I'll usually hit Soldier's Peak early. My warrior might wait until level 10 to get that shield to drop, but otherwise i do it it right at level 7. 8-stone prisoner. 9. I'll sometimes do Return to Ostagar, or some combination of the cleaning up the Denerim quests. No way I can pass by gangs infesting Denerim.

10-The first of the main quests, The Circle Tower. The Urn of Sacred Ashes, then the Dwarven Adventure. I pretty much go random with sidequests and main quests after that.

In terms of gear it's best to do Orzammar as fast as you can, due to the variety of high level equipment available.

I usually do

Circle Tower

Orzammar

Urn of Sacred Ashes

Brecilian Forest

Redcliffe

Doesn't Redcliffe give you pretty much jack in terms of equipment?

I just found these forums after not having played the game in a few years. I was wanting to get back into the game and found this thread interesting. When I last finished the game on nightmare difficulty (Xbox360) I did the following:

Redcliff, to the circle tower, on my way back I started up the return to Ostigar quest and finished redcliff. Afterward I did the stone prisoner and then return to ostigar on my way to the elves and the city. I circled round to the dwarves by way of retaking the Warden Tower. Oncei  finished with the dwarves the story was pretty much on auto pilot.

Lothering

Thanks to festival gifts I usually talk to every one first time in camp and then give them gifts. So then when I set out from camp I have their personal quests.

Lake Calinhad (for Sten)

Frostback Mountain (for Sten)

I complete any other quests I can in the areas like those you pick up from the Irregulars for example.

Redcliffe (Get Sten's sword and save the village and storm the castle)

Circle of Magi (side with the mages)

Redcliffe (cure Conner)

Following the clues (even though I know how to bypass them) I head to Denerem. While there I do everything I can find to do there, including all the misc quests you can pick up and have access to the areas they are in.

Head to Haven and complete that for the urn.

Cure the Arl.

Now and in no particular order I complete Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner (get Shale on the team) and return to Ostagar.

Next its Orsammar

Followed by seeking aid from the Elves.

Then its Denerem again for the Landsmeet and wrapping up with all the remaining misc quests that I have before reporting to the Arl about the Alienage issues.

Landsmeet (which I always win with all but that default old man siding with me) Loghain dies usually by my hand or Alistair's hand.

Make a baby with Morrigan

Defeat the darkspawn horde and the Arch demon. :D

My suggestion would be
Broken Circle
Arl of Redcliffe
Nature of the Beast
Paragon of her Kind
Urn of Sacred Ashes.

But my current playthrough have taken me to Orzammar before the Brecilian Forest.

My first pt I did the Brecilian Forest first and just got embarrassed by the corpses in the ruin, so I've avoided that strategy since.
1. Return to Ostagar
2. Soldiers Peak
3. Stone Prisoner
4. Circle Tower
5. Brecilian Forest
6. Orzammar
7.Redcliff
8. Denerim

And I usually visit Denerim here n there to do chanters board requests and side quests

In terms of gear, you should do Brecilian Forest first. Because you can then donate (buy elfroot) elfroot to gain levels. Then you can immediately open chest for T5-T7 gears in Ostagar and Soldier's Peak.

Do not really recommend this if you are looking for a challenge because you will start to faceroll everything immediately after.
