Or you would be a fan like me and consider the Bombadil-scenes pretty much pointless and out-of-place for a movie, one of the many decisions Jackson did right (hey, even the pitiful animated-movie left him out... :)

...

I think he works better as a mystery. Who would actually think Sandahl interesting if they confirm he is flemeth's old lover from that bard-story reborn or some stuff? Sometimes the best stories are the ones untold ... ahem...

Seconded, apart from the cruel jibe at the (admittedly now very dated) cartoon - I loved that thinkg when I was a kid!

I think Sandal is the first dwarven mage, and I think his powers do indeed have something to do with Flemeth. But why? I have no idea why Flemeth would take an interest in Sandal. The fact that she does is just really creepy....

Sandal is obviously a orphan who wandered in the deep roads, drank darkspawn blood while being possessed by a benevolent fade spirit and ate blue and red lyrium which made him all messed up

Cut content is about as useful as a silent witness. It may be a hint towards something BioWare was planning, but it hold as much gravitas as wet tissues.

It wasn't cut.  The reason most people didn't hear it is because it only triggers if you pause your party just above the group of dwarves who are having the conversation - most people continue forward and trigger the combat rather than the conversation.

Or you would be a fan like me and consider the Bombadil-scenes pretty much pointless and out-of-place for a movie, one of the many decisions Jackson did right (hey, even the pitiful animated-movie left him out... :) ) Though I would have really loved to see the whole barrow-wights and old willow-stories, but they don't work without Tom, and he is sadly annoying...

I think Tom Bombadil should have been left on the cutting room floor with the rest of the early drafts of the novel. His scenes in the book just stop the novel dead for a few chapters to give us a character who is god-tier powerful and as insufferable to match. The only thing those chapters even accomplish is to provide the Hobbits with the Barrow Blades, which as the Jackson film demonstrated, could have been provided by anyone else and not change the story in the slightest.

As for Sandal meanwhile, I think he's probably got a stronger connection to the Fade that most Dwarves have, since we know that a few Dwarves have entered the Fade via unusual circumstances, such as the Dwarf Warden and Varric, so they're not cut off entirely?

I also wonder if his reason for wandering off in DA2 and his apparent uneasiness in the Primeval Thaig was because he somehow sensed the presence of Red Lyrium nearby? Oghren mentioned in Origins that he could sense the concentration of Lyrium veins in the mountains near the Temple of Andraste, implying that Dwarves do possess this ability as part of their "Stone Sense".

Sandal might have started off as a joke, but the potential is there for some nice side stuff.  I love the idea that he's tied in with Flemeth somehow.  The "old lady" by his bed always makes me think of her, and that prophecy of his is spooky.  Stuff might tie in later, or he might be a red herring.  I wonder if he is half-dwarf.

I'm intrigued by him and wish they'd flesh out his story. I'm always happy to see him in the game. :)

Are we certain him and Bodahn won't be in the game?

At the end of II they were heading off to Orlais. Seemed like a shoo-in that they'd be there, somewhere. Who will sell us our gear before the final battle if not Sandal, after he's dispatched several pride demons to make the place secure for us?

As for who/what he is, I labour under the absolute certainty that he is the first dwarven mage since their connection to the fade was cut. His comments about the magic coming back correlate with "not enchantment" by the frozen ogre, and tie in nicely with whatever is happening with the rifts in Inquisition.

My own personal theory, based on practically nothing, is that Dagna will be asked to study/look after Sandal, and at some point Sandal will utter the words, "I like Dagna" and our hearts will melt.

Wait, when did they say Sandal and Bodahn wouldn't be in the game? This will make me sad if that's actually a conformed fact.

As for who he is, my best guess is that something happened to him while he was in the Deep Roads before being rescued by Bodahn. It's been made pretty clear he can defend himself, so he may have had to survive down there for a long time. His old lady comment in DA2 gives me the impression Flemeth may be involved, or that he sees prophecies like others have said.
