There are spiders in the storm coast caves. "Deepstalkers"

That one was such a mean trick. You're all, "Oh, deepstalkers, NBD." So you go into the cave and HAhahaha. Spiders. And it's especially horrible if you hadn't lit a torch on the wall—I know because I hadn't. I ended up spamming whirlwind over and over again just to keep them away. It didn't work, but it made me feel a little bit better. We won't discuss the screaming.

S'pose you went in the wrong entrance.  The main cave entrances all have giant spider webs on the outside.  I knew what I was gettin' into when I walked in.

Storm Coast was manageable. But I had one cave in a different zone which had a trigger and they spawned "surprise"-style like in Origins. Didn't expect that.

I only went in one cave on the Storm Coast while

Spoiler
and there were spiders in it. I wasn't happy, but they were all on the ground and they seem to chitter instead of hiss. So I got through it alright.

The one thing that I have been doing that makes it more bearable in dealing with Spiders is when your exploring and see the red dots quickly go into tactical mode and from a aerial view mark the targets and then play it from there, you can also turn the camera away while in tactical mode so you don't even half to look at the fight  until its over just smash buttons.

You what sucks?  I like spiders. Yet everyone keeps portraying them as the embodiment of fear itself.  Why can't it ever be evil clowns?

Hah, can you imagine them making that horrible creaking noise coming from the ceiling like in DA:2 in pitch darkness? I kinda like that the dark spaces were actually dark this time. DA:O's sound was pretty terrible too though, and Maker, that overpower ability. Frakking creepy.

For some reason, fantasy likes to have giant spiders. At least they didn't speak like in LOTR.

The spiders in the Fade didn't bother me!  Maybe because they're a little more "armored" there, or perhaps smaller?

I did love the line about Cassandra seeing flesh-eating maggots instead of spiders, and that the demon is showing whatever our characters fear.  Ah, BioWare.  You know me so well.

A giant spider came down from the ceiling and tried to eat my face. I was not happy.

This game seems very made for arachnophobics, spiders are so incredibly rare, and the things you fight in the fade are supposed to take on the form of what you fear, but everyone has to see spiders and not only am I not afraid of spiders I happen to really like them and have built up an immunity to a lot of the more potent venom (such as black widows). I hated just having to accept that my inquisitor has to be afraid of spiders, period.

And so I have been maintaining three simultaneous walkthroughs (don't ask why), happy and merry that I haven't encountered spiders yet. I stayed away from dungeons just in case.

Then there was Fade (Here Lies the Abyss). There are spiders there (apparently, the same we see in the first minutes of the game, post-character creation). They aren't really scary, I was just startled a bit when the first two fell from above, but they were not close, so no jumping or shrieking.

Then there was Western Approach. I haven't noticed real spiders, but once saw some creatures really resembling spider-scorpion hybrid.

And then... then there were Emerald Graves. So I was convinced there'd be spiders, since it's the forest and there were elves once. Thankfully, no spiders. Then I started this quest (A Lover's Promise). It was somewhere in the middle of the map, in a building with a statue of a guy who killed the dragon. A note on the wall, clicked on it, started the quest. A new map point appeared, so I went there. There was something like a picnic spot that was clickable, so I clicked and promptly fell off my chair, because out of nowhere a huge freaking spider appear - a huge as in half of the screen, a freaking as in previous games. That might not have been a spider, but since I was hiding under the desk (listening to horrible sounds of my party being eaten) and then rebooted PC (because I am Coward McCoward the Third), I am not 100% sure.

I pinned the map screenshot in case someone brave enough would go there and check if it were indeed HFS, or I am just delusional. It's the map screen, no spiders under the spoiler, honestly

Spoiler

You are correct. If you loot the spider corpse you realize that the poor sucker from the picnic area got eaten, since you find his wedding ring.

You ran into Snowball, as I've heard him affectionately named. If you loot the corpse you realize that the poor sucker from the picnic area got eaten, since you find his wedding ring.

Actually, I am sad to report that I just met Snowball. He is a HFS underneath Caer Bronach and I'm really glad I won't be sleeping alone tonight. Snowball my snows.
Drops some cool stuff, though.

I think arachnophobia stems from trypophobia (google it), something to do with the eyes. Just a guess though.

So wait, there are giant ones hidden in the basements of the keeps you can capture? And when I say giant, I mean giant giant, not just normal DA:O size.

They named a spider Snowball.

That was cute.

I hated DAII spiders. Fortunately, DAI spiders weren't that much trouble. They have done a nice job without removing spiders entirely.

CRESTWOOD KEEP! One giant spider came down in front of you! :S

I never ran into snowball at Caer Bronach, for which I suppose I am glad. :P

Funny how arachnophobia makes you scared of the fake sound that some artist decided to put on the game spiders (considering that in real life spiders don't make that sound) Not trying to sound rude or anything, I'm just curious.

I cannot remember any other surprise encounter, save from Snowball and the one in the Emerald Graves.
