I don't want the Corypheus theory to be true because it makes Hawke even more of a screw up.

 

Those three (the Not!Merrill pic) might have something to do with our specialisations.

As humorous as I find it that Hawke "dun goofed again!" (though I personally don't view this as such a disastrous character flaw as others), I think the seals would have expired anyways.  Malcolm was revealed to have restored them in Legacy which indicates that their power isn't infinite.

I don't really know why everyone is communicating in spoiler tags... anyone who comes to this thread (with *Heavy Spoilers* in the title) deserves what they get, but I'll play ball.

I sincerely hope Cory is not the Elder One, he just doesn't seem to possess the power for something on this scale. He had several other magisters and thousands and thousands of blood sacrifices to breach the Fade the first time, now he has what? At best a splinter faction of Tevinter, some sect of the Grey Wardens, and maybe some other elements.

 

But lets look at this from all we know of the Elder One, rather than Cory.

 

Felassan - An elven mage of great power serving an unknown master (The Elder One seems to be highly likely). He has great reverence for a specific god: Fen'Harel. Why would he serve Corypheus? He wouldn't.

Plans - According to the devs and what we've seen the Elder One has been planning this for a long, long time. (Flemeth seems aware of his plans during DA2 as she requests Hawke move her via a slow, but untraceable fashion). The minimum amount of time Cory has been released is 3 years (if Hawke freed him during Act 3, which is 3 years prior to DA2 Epilogue and DAI), no where near enough time to do all this.

Location - Based off what little we here of the Elder One he seems to be a presence in the fade, not able to present physically in this world. Cory is absolutely a physical entity, it's all he ever was.

 

 

All in all what we know of the Elder One doesn't really fit Cory, it does fit something trapt in the fade who attempted to use Cory to escape a thousand years ago, and is attempting to finish the job now. Cory might simply be a convenient pawn in all this. Sure we see pictures of Cory all over, but Bioware has been tight-lipped about the Elder One throughout all of this, why would they be so careless as to reveal it now? This could be quite simple trickery, they put up images of Cory because that is the physical form we end up fighting the Elder One as, but it isn't Cory controlling that body any more.

 

Anyway, my 2 pence.

sorry if its Cory that is disappointing to me.  Nothing to do with his character, but neither he nor the Architect would have been a grand enough villain for what I was expecting. Also, how does Cory fit in with Fellessan and if he has been imprisoned until very recently, how has he been able to manipulate events to have Orlais in Civil War and the Chantry/templars/mages thing going on.  The devs have said previously that events were manipulated to prevent the normal entities able to respond to the breach from doing so......I could see Cory being a mini boss type, but this leaves me somewhat disappointed in the game.  Yes I am still going to buy it and will probably love it, but I was expecting a villain a little more epic then Cory.

Tevinter Magisters were back in time most powerfull beings, using blood magic and having a thousands of followers and millions of slaves. We have literally zero information about what sort of ancient blood magic and rituals they were doing, and also how did magisters get to golden city, even if they came back as a first of darkspawn. Whatever they did in golden city, they screwed up big and it`s hard to say of how it could impact their powers.

Also he was in sleep mode for a long time, we don`t know what it could do to his powers or where and how he was able to restore his powers, when it`s showed that he was killed by Hawke, or atleast we thoughts so, there is still lot of questions...

To be fair Hawke canonically is supposed to release Cory pretty soon after arriving in Kirkwall. That gives Cory about 7+ years to screw everything over. More than enough time.

Whilst behind seals he was able to influence an entire Carta of dwarves.  Unleashed I can only imagine how far his indoctrination extends; that's one of the reasons I'm not disappointed - we have no clue what his power set is.  He was pretty frickin' powerful whilst sealed and shortly after waking from the longest enforced nap ever recorded.  This is one of the dudes that broke into the Golden City, after all.

About the Corey think, I find it a little doubtful still, he still could be an underling of something greather when you look over the names of the achivements and consider it on a wider scale. Plus think it would be a touch to expected if he was a main bad guy, means hawke messed up even more.

Iactually have a theory about that, since he is an ancient magister he should possess the abilities of a somniar right? So what if his "subconscious" has been orchestrating this from the fade while his body was trapped and when he was released he had a moment of confusion or something

Also we don`t know what or who exactly is Flemeth or how looks now Tevinter society. Back in DA2 we could see how is possible to ressurect someone just with a little amulet. It may be that despite the Corypheus slain in prison by Hawke, there could be someone other able to ressurect him, Tevinter magisters maybe ?

Exactly, they had thousands of slaves sacrificed for their power, today Cory has at best a few hundred people he could sacrifice for his power. He (and the other Magisters) were following the instructions of something else when they attempted that first fade walk. That being seems far more suited to being the Big Bad Wolf than Cory. It has a history of manipulating events to suit its purpose.

 

As to other posts saying Cory could have subconsciously done stuff, well he wasn't aware of any time passing when he woke up, he didn't seem to be aware of much at all, so how could he have been planning and orchestrating this for decades? I feel like the Cory supporters are reaching for straws, because what Bioware has indicated in the past makes it incredibly unlikely that Cory would have had the time, or power, to do this.

 

There are also the points (conveniently ignored) about Felassan and the Elder Ones apparent entrapment in the fade.

Flemeth never died. Even if Warden 'killed' her, (s)he only slew a part of her. She split herself into different pieces (if she was telling the truth to Hawke) for more reasons than just avoiding the Warden's potential killing her.

Also Cory never died, he immediately transferred his consciousness to Larius/Janika. This is all but 100% confirmed.

To be fair, I don't think we get an accurate representation of Corypheus in Legacy. He has just woken up from a prison that had sealed him for several centuries. Now it has been a few years later so he is fully recovered. And we can't compare him to his ancient Tevinter self because he was only human then and now he is "More than Darkspawn. More than human."
