I already have this running well on my windows 8.1 laptop but the gog version (tested it today) is simple to install and runs well on my 7, 8 and 8.1 64bit systems--- should make the game more open for new people.

 

fyi, The gog version has an issue with ati cards... remove atigktxx.dll and atioglxx.dll to force your ati card to boot the game.
