Cant mages use books in this game? I remember seeing them in the very first demo.
but for different mage weapons I would want magical gauntlets/brass knuckles. or a melee weapon of some kind ;-;

I'm out of likes, so quoting. I personally don't see the point in a book, considering it's functionally no different fro a staff (you can't melee with it). Also puzzling is the fact that ALL mages use staves. Wouldn't that make finding apostates (like Solas, Bethany, MHawke and Morrigan) even easier?
Scepters are kinda OK, but little wands are only OK for female healers. ![]()
I actually really like the idea of tomes dealing very close range AoE damage centred on the caster. This would be weaker than most other attacks, but it would be a nice contrast to the long range single-target staff, and it would fit in well with the Mage's general crowd-control combat role.
It wouldn't have to be a tome either, could be a crystal ball/palantir or what have you, essentially along the lines of the Wizard accessories in Diablo 3.
Could be a good idea Bioware!
Chakrams are not boomerangs. They are thrown metal discs. Please people, stop asking for these as weapons.
Though they don't have to be used as boomerangs if they were in the game, that's just how KoA did it. They could always be thrown traditionally, but with an endless supply of them (like how you never run out of arrows, and Tallis can throw an infinite number of knives in combat).
Craft a dagger with intel on it..and then craft a buckler with spell power... I dunno, seems like there might be a cool option.
I would prefer to stick with staffs but have them more actual staff length like Japanese bo's that usually between 1.2-1.8 metres. Instead of this Quarter staff 1.8-2.7 stuff.
the shorter Bo style staff seems more practical. along with the extent of magi training in melee being "just hit stuff" whereas to use a staff the size that magi have in DA takes many many many years of dedication to use, they should be far more lethal with it then the lore suggests.
There is that Spirit Sword thingy. Can't remember the exact name of it ...
But, you'll still be holding the staff.
Tada?
Well you have to give Bioware a little credit for trying to mix things up in DA 2 by combining a staff with a melee weapon. It was a unique combination that served to shoot magic from long range and do melee in short range combat. Perhaps this is continuning into DAI, but I haven't really seen any pic showing solid proof of this.
You also now have the Knight Enchanter specialization which is more melee oriented using spirit blades. I do agree that variety is never a bad thing as long as it's fitting for that class.
Uhh thats a Hair pin?
Uhh ok... i'll just be over here useing a sword.
@Dusk Shadow: I think that your idea is very creative. I think it shows a connection to the world and a uniqueness not really seen anywhere else.

I would be ok with this so long as there were weapon attacks in a tree just for mages too, but apparently mages will no longer even be able to melee with their staves in this game so yea...

Then they simply become throwing blades and thus would be a rogue weapon. I really would only feel comfortable with them having scepters, Melee Staffs and maybe a gauntlet/claw thing. the Gauntlet could easily be like a stylized Manica-Cestus combo

Some of the enemy Mages in the livestream gameplay from PAX Australia were wielding tomes sort of floating in front of them as their primary "weapon". Haven't seen the player character wield them anywhere.
Honestly, for this to happen it would have to be from a culture we have not yet seen, because all the mages in the DA world have only used staves. There were the Knight Enchanters in DAO, but they didn't stick around and there seemed to to need to put their weapon away to cast spells. Also, the mages seem to spend their time focusing on self control and spell casting, how does that leave time for martial endeavors?
On a design level, I'd prefer more spells, cool spell effects, and individual mage animations to more generic I have a sword like the fighter swinging. I like the different classes have different weapons.
this is actually a great idea and suggestion
rogue and warrior have 2 selections so far, mages can also be given 2 weapon classification,
I am happy to see things brutal like thor's hammer or reaper's sickle in mage's hand
mages do have a second weapon specialization, it's called Magic! ![]()
