Just thinking outloud, I really want an alien antagonist in ME4, as in, some race we haven't really seen be the bad guy yet. ME1 had a turian and ME2 mostly had none (cuz the Reapers don't really have a lot of character) and ME3 had TIM who was a human. I really want to see maybe a Salarian or an Asari be the nemesis to our protagonist. The ideas were played around with in for example the Shadow Broker DLC, but I want more ;-)

There was something cool about ME1 introducing the series' first villain as being one of the aliens because we did not learn a lot about the lore or the world before it sunk in long time after we knew who our antagonist was. If ME4 introduces new species I wouldn't object to one of them being the bad guy either.

Bottomline though, is: We've had enough of all that Cerberus dominion. We don't need more human bad guys in our Mass Effect.

Every ME game has had aliens as the primary antagonist.

I honestly don't care much about about any particular race being a nemesis. Each race can be described by an extremist form of a certain human attribute (Turians; militant, Salarians; logical, etc.). Not that every ME race is boring or indistinct, but the writers wouldn't have an incredibly difficult time rewriting any human (or some other sentient alien species for that matter) into a role designed for another race. Of course, backstory is a concern (you wouldn't likely see a human start a war in the name of Asari religion), but the psychology of a character, the important bit, is largely negotiable.

That said, this is a sci-fi game with emphasis on a galactic community, it would be counter-intuitive if MENext didn't prominently feature other races in some form (and there's nothing more prominent than a direct antagonist). As long as it isn't another mustache twirling "I vill destroy ze universe!" kind of baddie I'm down with it.

I think a straight up fight with a new race is preferable to a single enemy or group. Get back to some basics x doesn't like y because z and war breaks out.

The last thing Mass Effect needs is another war. We just had one with a race of uninteresting, one-dimensional squids, we don't need to do that again.

Mass Effect is about nuance and exploration. Inventing a race whose soul purpose is to start a war would be frankly contradictory to those to principles. Given the infinite complexity of and galactic politics and the infinite wonder of the universe, the thought of just another fight with some other race sounds utterly distasteful.

Now, preferably if there must be any conflict with a race, it would be in classic Romulan style. Both sides locked in cold war constantly trying to out fox each other and gain the upper hand. Keep the strife political; I want my dialog wheel to hold more ammunition than my gun.

No, Bioware most certainly should not "get back to some basics." They've already had it easy with some big war with another Big Bad. It's time to start writing some interesting stuff.

Why start a war? I was talking in the traditional context of an RPG and traditional context of a shooter. Politics fails there is a war between two sides the protagonist has a vested interest in victory and becomes the chosen hero of the period who leads his people on a long journey towards victory. The whole point of which is to avoid the 'big bad' and avoid the tired recycled atmosphere of a space opera television series.

Have politics but for the love of gaming don't turn it into a picture book of moral comparisons and metaphorical analysis. These things are great if that's what you're into but for most people it would be about as much fun as riding in an elevator with two kaidens.

I see your point, but I'd rather not have another iteration of the patented "Bioware Story." I'm tired of this concept of a chosen hero, especially in the context of sci-fi, where prophesy and fantasy have really no place. Yes, a Trek setting doesn't exactly translate as well into a game, especially when compared to Star Wars, but a guy can dream. I've said it before, my ideal setting for MENext is a crumbling galaxy following the war. Everyone wants to take over, but no one wants to look bad while doing it so they work through pirates and "unaffiliated" organizations. Nothing heated, but enough scuffles to entertain an unfortunate captain stuck in the middle of the political strife.

Every race could be featured with their own agendas and their own form of villainy. We don't need another race to march in to start a conflict, we just take a look at the darker side of the existing races.

I understand there needs to be shooting and there's no better place for that than a war, but why not break tradition?

I can see a "clean up" mission taking down a major Merc force that wants to run as much of the galaxy as possible.

I'd rather have an alien protagonist.

Completely agree. An out and out war would make little sense. Even the Leviathan would stand little chance against the numerous Citadel races.

A new race wouldn't either but a cold war style power struggle would be perfect.

There would be plenty to investigate and explore, plenty of potential conflict, plenty of factions to fight. I really hope Bioware do something like this.

The bad guys in the next ME should be a behind the scenes chessmaster type like the Babylon 5 Shadows

If mass effect 4 is set after ME3, the antagonist could be a corrupt official taking advantage of the galaxy's races rebuilding everything. Then it could end in a cliff hanger which hints that the real villain is something/someone 'bigger' (but not as big as the reapers, obviously).

I'd prefer a detective-like story when you don't know who the antagonist is up until the last moment when it turns out that he/she was always within your grasp, like one of your squadmates!
