Are game devs happy with 30fps?

After playing Battlefield 4 on PS4 and seeing how beautiful that game is while running at 60fps, it makes me wonder why most devs are still shooting for 30fps in their games. On the Xbox 360 and PS3, it seemed like devs had to make a choice between graphics and frame rate. Most chose graphics and I understand that. However, on this new and more powerful hardware, it seems to me that one can have both gorgeous graphical fidelity and a high frame rate that benefits gameplay and even looks better in motion.

So then, why are games like Dragon Age: Inquisition and Bloodborne stuck at this lackluster 30fps? Shouldn't we be moving more towards the PC experience which has been superior for years primarily because of the high frame rates achievable on that platform? I've heard some devs claim that games at 30fps are "more cinematic". I think that's like trying to say that a film being played at 48 frames per second makes it more like a video game. It's nonsense.

Anyway, I just find it a little annoying that we're still stuck with 30fps when both of these new consoles have proven they can handle 60fps perfectly fine with a high resolution and stunning graphical fidelity. A cynical mind might say that devs are keeping to 30fps simply because it's easier to program and optimize.

What say you?

Most devs aren't shooting for 30 fps.

30 fps is a limit mostly just for consoles because they don't have the power for more.

And Ubisoft. But Ubisoft hates gamers, so that isn't surprising at all.

It's easier on their engine to render 30fps vs 60fps. A lot of things have to happen in the render loop.

If it doesn't utterly destroy my gaming experience I don't really care. I'm tired of hearing about how important 60 FPS @ 1080p is. I didn't need it 19 years ago, I could make do with or without it now.

30 FPS works, but 60 is better. The most important thing is having stable FPS. Devs claiming 30 is more cinematic is bs.

I think even Cameron talked about this a bit in an interview way back, though google isn't showing up much. I generally prefer the highest possible framerate, but it's a give-and-take depending on the performance quality you're losing. Twitch-Reflex or High-Reflex games absolutely need higher frame rates in my opinion.

Different devs are gonna have different opinions on it. Que sera sera.

"Filmic". I personally disagree. Greatly.

It really makes my blood boil. Here you have people who know better who are just lying through their teeth in an attempt to try to justify their game's low frame rate. Or you have people like David Cage, who are trying to be film makers in the video game business. You just want to slap these people, or at the very least send them a strongly worded letter.

30 FPS is a low framerate? When did that happen?

Particularly funny now that filmmakers are moving beyond 30 fps. I guess they didn't find it "cinematic" enough. The other cinematic bs front is sticking lens flare and other crap optical artefacts deliberately in games.

Total Biscuit keeps saying the word "objectively" in this video. I do not think this word means what he thinks it means.

It was Alex Amancio, the lead guy on Assassin's Creed Unity, who said that 30 was more cinematic. Directly after I read that I went over to Ubi's forums and said how stupid of a comment that was.

It's not more cinematic. But they're trying to pull higher graphical fidelity out of the machines (the whole 1080p and 900p debate), which means framerate might suffer. It's pretty straightforward.

Right now I am, considering I prefer high graphics to high fps. *playing Civilization Beyond Earth on 20 fps*

I'm of the opinion that a consistent framerate is more important. If I couldn't maintain 60 FPS I would rather sit at 30 than bounce between 45 and 60.

Although I find it stupid when a devs tries to pass 30 FPS off as something they did on purpose because it "looks better". I would rather they just say that the game didn't perform well enough at 60 FPS so they capped it at 30. Alternatively give me a framerate slider so I can choose for myself if I want to sacrifice that performance for a higher FPS.

Same. I've been enjoying Sunset Overdrive today, and I don't even know what resolution and frame rate it has.

A game can be fun without pushing things to maximum. I don't see the need to stress about the numbers like some folks do. :/

I think a lot of it has to do with sacrificing frame rate for graphics. The video game industry is constantly trying to push for better looking games despite the consoles not being able to handle them, and It's a lot easier to make a game look great and run at 30 FPS than it is to make a game look great and run at 60.

30 FPS is a low framerate? When did that happen?

It really depends on who you are and what you're used to. I used to be in the '30 FPS is fine' crowd until I started spending a lot of time playing games at 60 FPS. Now my eyes have become really picky and it's very apparent to me when a game is running below 60 FPS. It makes the game harder to enjoy because I'm constantly noticing the difference and wondering what it'd be like at 60. I'm sure it's possible there are people playing at 120 FPS consistently who find 60 FPS to be low.

30 FPS is much more cheaper for the studio to go for. With 60 FPS, rendering time isn't doubled; it's trippled or more.

I don't really care. As long as it does not drop below 30FPS i'm happy I don't like being lied to though (ubisoft, from software and so on). Oddly the only people I see complaining about this stuff is PC gamers who won't be affected by it like Jim Sterling or Totalbiscuit.

After becoming used to 60 FPS and above from the upgrades I've done...I can't stand 30 anymore. I've been spoiled - it feels like a slideshow now. It gives me a headache just watching it... :S

ME3 is kinda hilarious in FPS, main game has stable 60 fps, cutscenes have 30.

Is that normal? :P
