This may be a silly question but, I'm slightly bemused as to how the Templars have

managed to simply leave the Chantry's authority and rebel against the Mages? I believed that

Templars had a Lyrium addiction and since the Chantry control the supply of Lyrium they control the Templars.

This was established in Origins, DA2 and Dragon Age: Asunder, the same novel that Lord Seeker Lambert

declares Templar Order separation from the Chantry.

Surely the majority of Templars would be driven insane without the use of Lyrium after a prolonged period

of time meaning that they would be forced to return to the Chantry due to their addiction.

The only explanation I have so far is that the Chantry actually lied to the entire Templar Order on the need for

Lyrium to access Templar abilities and was merely a means to ensure their complete subordination. Even so,

surely some Templars would have considered that before deciding to break their commitment to the Chantry?

While it may only be a minority, I can imagine that some of the Templars may stay with the Chantry just to

maintain good health.

Well, it was mentioned and spoiled that red lyrium has a better taste for those addicts so they switched to better stuff. Still that`s not likely that bad granpa came and start cooking for Templars when whole chantry is in chaos after the Kirkwall...

There is no more hierarchy within the chantry after  some templars gone wild, no matter on how much Lyrium is going to sit divine herself...

I don't think there's any doubt that lyrium is necessary in order for non-mages to access the fade, and that like blood magic, red lyrium allows templars to access talents they wouldn't ordinarily be able to.  Red templars could be templars who were cut off from the regular supply because of the split with the chantry, victims of mind control by the big bad, or templars who want the extra power to combat what they perceive is a heightened threat.  Not sure how this is going to work out.

Uh, Templars need lyrium.

Only the Red Templars use red lyrium.

Both sides are pretty weak in DA:I at the moment, but I doubt they didn't have connections to at least supply themselves for a few years.

Well, just look at how the war turned out. Clearly they didn't make good decisions.

They probably thought that they would be able to crush the rebellion quickly, but since they are dumb and incompetent, things went south.

just to say this at a econimic stand point, the dwarves wouldn't stop selling the lyrium, they would just be selling it directly to templars now instead of the chantry.

Templars need it.

the Chantry does not.

The dwarves sell it.

So the Templars would buy it.

In all seriousness the lyrium would keep flowing, it would just be more militarized supply shipments.

and if you are wondering about the Templars money. they might deal with the carta and do shady deals, or (This wouldn't surprise me at all) the Templars have some noble families backing them with funds, which is quite likely since some templars come from noble families.

Who's going to stop the Templars from taking lyrium by force from Chantry storerooms? Once they're in full rebellion, they could probably get access to more from suppliers like the Carta.

Here's a question. who do you think the chantry put in charge of protecting those store rooms? i doubt they gave lay brothers or sisters the task. it is   most likely they put the seekers in charge. and most of them sided with Lambert.

i mean of course there would be a few templars loyal to the chantry. but most are trained to be soldiers who follow orders. and most of them will probably think killing the mage's going against the words of the chant of light is the right thing to do.

Precisely. I imagine the Chantry's stores of lyrium could last quite a while.

*Places fingers on the sides of my temples in desperation*

"JUST GIVE ME MY LYRUIM!" Grimmdead shouts over all the imaginary voices.

I would NOT be surprised one bit if they Chantry lied and left claim that templars could only use their abilities if they consumed Lyruim. I say this because I have played a Templar character in both games so far (and we also had Alistair) and neither times was I not allowed to use my Templar abilities in game and loose the Lyrium Dust from my inventory. it just sat there looking pretty at me.

since I didn't suffer inventory penalties, nor has the game mechanics allow such penalties I think it would be proof enough.

The lie, from both the Chantry and the higher ups of the Templar Order would only use it to keep their underlings and recruits in check.

Cassandra is a Seeker, has the Templar specialization and doesn't need lyrium to use the abilities. It was a good control mechanism, but sadly it's come to bite them in the ass.

We have confirmation that Templars need lyrium for their powers. Those Seekers who never joined the Templars are apparently able to get their powers without risking lyrium addiction, but it doesn't say they don't need any at all.

I think I read somewhere that while lyrium's part of the lore, they're not going to make it part of the game.  They might work it into the dialogues or something, but it would make many people just not want to play templars.  I'm going to imagine it's part of the supply chain that Inq will forever remain ignorant of.  Getting materials for neat stuff might be interesting, and lyrium trade with the dwarves is one of the race options' backstory.  Varric, with a past wrapped up in the Merchants' Guild, is a companion we start out with.  We've got the red templars to contend with, and other neat abominations.  Demanding potions be available to consume is like button mashing, to me.
