Too much hand-waving around the mass relay technology to say either way.
Does anyone believe the Mass Effect universe is pretty realistic and possible in the future

@madcat if we had a crystal ball we'd probably very disappointed.

I doubt that alien life will contain so many bipedal species.

In the future, we will all have biotics: Take a look at this short film from ESA (European Space Agency)
There's pull, warp and a very mass-effecty music.
joke aside, November will be awesome. First N7 day and then Philae's landing.

Having trouble with the quoting system but Tonymac the ending was not bad at all IMO. Even in the vanilla state. I did feel it needed more explanation so after EC I don't see any issue. On topic I think it would be sweet if it is possible but if we find Charon and it is a Mass Effect Relay, lets freaking hoe we find some damn ruins on mars and a working beacon or we are all screwed lol.

I think i'd be pretty annoyed in my final moments if a reaper actually showed up all 'This, is inevitable all organic life, must be harvested' *Incinerated by beam* (Or worse! Indoctrinated!) So yeah, some sort of prevention of that would be nice. Anyone up for building a crucible? ![]()
Finding a relay though, yeah, pretty sweet that'll be!

Maybe... But I bet that it won't be Humans that make the First Contact, TBH...
Not finding a Relay or something like that, but I'm 100% Sure that we aren't alone in the universe. See, theories only believe that the life forms depend on Oxigen to survive and all the etcs that are on Earth.

I never really understood that, i've heard people spout that theory but i'm sure there's life out there that doesnt need oxygen. Heck maybe some other life lives on some sort of gas we've never heard of, or some nasty goo
I wont be too surprised if theres actually an already-functional relay out there in our galaxy being used by other races and such. If that is so i'd hope we get the chance to use it.

No.
FTL may not even be possible by the physical laws of the universe as we currently understand them. That is why the writers of Mass Effect had to introduce the fictional element zero.

Yes, but you talk about an Human Scientific Point... Human! What if Aliens did master something that is like FTL or they're already here or on a Nearby World...

Scientists in Sweden have also done a a record in Quantum Teleportation, which is also a great improvement to Star Trek teleporter just recently, in fact. Quantum Physics ftwI believe that one of the theoretical applications of the Higgs boson is exactly that (increasing/decreasing mass), according to a couple of articles I read.
Scientists in general have softened their stance on the possibility of FTL in recent years whereas they used to say it was flat-out impossible.
Hans Shot you have state yourself that FTL is impossible as we understand it, since most scienist have also became more laid back on the idea of FTL without the help of of a speical mac griffin then I wouldn't say its impossible. Its just a mater of, when the discovery might happen. Also a local group of scientist have also recreated the tractor beam from Star Trek athough in a much smaller scale.

The physical laws of the universe as we understand them currently seem to render faster than light travel impossible.
NASA's website gives a good run down on why FTL travel seems to be impossible. It isn't just about technological prowess. If the laws of the universe are as we currently understand them, then FTL travel would be impossible for aliens in our universe as it is for us. In order for FTL travel our current understanding of the universe has to be flawed. That is why some scientists have tried to come up with ideas for interstellar travel that don't require actual FTL, like the creation of wormholes. Mass Effect in fact goes that route as well by introducing something similar to the alcubierre drive.

When I play Mass Effect the one thing I always thought that in 150 years this could actually happen (besides the Reapers) It makes sense the way the aliens are and the galatic government thing and how the Humans discover and react to the other species, relays etc..
I think it would be awesome to have Turians, Krogans, Asari etc..
Do you think this future (besides Reapers) is possible?
A blue colored, lesbian, biotic wielding, alien sex doll race, that can reproduce by having sex with anything, does indeed make perfect sense.

Anything is possible. Including the possibility that something is not possible.
Ideas in Mass Effect can be made true to some extent, but to have it exactly as we 'know' it is highly unlikely. (There's no giant object near Pluto that serves as a launching platform).

The Avenger is one of the most ridiculous-looking and impractical rifles I have ever seen in a futuristic sci-fi video game.

There's life right here on Earth that doesn't need oxygen. A lot of life, in fact. We've known about it for decades.

Which is precisely why i dont understand the people that state life out there would NEED oxygen in order to live. I've only come across a few people so far to say it, but they're there... and quite misinformed it seems.

Nope.
Chances are no intelligent species will want to contact us or be contacted by us. Also chances are there are no intelligent civilizations residing close to us.
Realistically speaking, the Killzone Universe is FAR more likely to happen than the Mass Effect universe or at least the back story of it (WW3 caused by resource depletion, Global Government, colonization of other worlds in order to feed a resource starved Earth, war with rebellious colonies, mass mutations of settlers to hostile worlds).

Well technically, other races were not close to us, mass relay technology jumped us quite far away from Sol system. And contact was largely accidental, according to the codex. If there is a mass relay network out there, we might contact other races quite soon.
That said, I think ME scenario is a very lucky one. I have doubts that everything will work that well for the humanity if we ever contact/get contacted by another intelligent race.
