Magical Melee?

While there are many things about this game that really got me excited, the one thing that doesn't is the combat.  From the vids and twitches I have seen I can't help but notice that combat is a total chaotic mess.  Even when the combat is paused for tactics mode, it is difficult to tell what’s happening due to the magical maelstrom around everything.  I understand and would expect magical attacks to have some magical effects, but it seems that every combat move has clouds of smoke and sparks flying.

To me this is very distracting and makes the combat very unappealing.  My question is will there be a way to turn off all the magical melee effects in the game options?

My guess, no. We've seen the options menu and it had things like gore and character circles but not magical effects.

Hmm.  That is unfortunate.

Does anyone else think there is too much 'effects' going on during combat?

I thought the combat was difficult and messy to navigate too.

So I did a little experiment with my girlfriend:

I asked her to look at the combat from the Inquisition videos and tell me how she felt about it. Sure enough, she said it looked messy, "I can't see what's going on!"

So I fired up DA2 and went into a combat situation and asked her to follow the combat. Not surprisingly, she also commented that she can't follow it and it looks just as messy as the combat in DAI.

We concluded therefore that it is largely the perspective of the spectator in which it is difficult to follow the combat if you are not in control.

I think you will find that actually playing DAI, the combat will feel just fine and not such a "mess".

Hope that relieves some concern.

Well I never had any problem with following combat in DA:O.  Loved that combat in fact.  DA2 was just too much of the over the top acrobatics.  DAI seems to be following, only adding magical effects as well.

Oddly enough I talked to my brother this weekend and asked him if he was following DA:I any.  He said no (he hated DA2), and then the first thing he asked me was if the combat had all those crazy somersaults and crap in it.  Course I just watch a vid with Varric doing back-flips everywhere like some monkey, so I told him "yeah, yeah it does".  And he just lost what little interest he had in the game.  Oh well.

Just watched the twitch recording from this morning.

The combat in the cave was just impossible to follow due to all the magical effects going on.  Often when one of this characters would die I had no idea what even happened to them or what was attacking them, you just can't see what is going on.

I guess that happened because the guy wasn't playing seriously on that part. That was also on hard and on a area of a higher level than what they should be facing. That was why his rogue and mage were getting 2-shotted. But for a player playing more seriously and in a area of an appropriate level, tthe stuff should be OK to follow, I guess. Though I should say I'm a little biased. Some guys think Soul Calibur has excessive effects, and I don't. Interestingly enough, these are guys who don't play the game. The effects actually help you to more quickly realize what's going on, once you get used to them. Perhaps it will be the case with Inquisition.

Odd, am I the only one who actually thinks the combat looks good? Doesn't look all that different from the other games, and I think the effects look cool. I mean, it's not that hard to follow.  We watchin the same videos?

Um that doesnt prove anything.  That is just stating that your girlfriend thought it looked messy.  Did she try playing DA2, if so, did she still think it was messy?

Really I thought I was the only one, but 1/2 the people seem to say the same thing. Even getting used to it seems kinda a hard thing to do. Aside from dragons throwing fire or the giants throwing rocks its tough to see just what the hell is going on at times.  If people say the same thing once people have gotten a chance to play it,  Bioware seriously needs to  tone down the effects where they aren't needed.  Flash and eye candy  is overrated.

Or, just give us an option to tone them down or turn them off.  Magic I'm fine with, but when every time someone blows their nose rainbows have to fly it's overkill.

I remember there was one sustain spell in DA2 that would put huge blue glowing shields around each character, and that made it difficult to see who was where at times. That was the only time I thought it was overkill.

What I did appreciate though was that all the sustain effects would completely disappear outside of combat so I didn't have to do conversations while glowing red with blue specks floating around my body. XD
