Awakening: They sure did overdo the homosexual angle here, didn't they?

After a somewhat subtle portrayal in DA:O where people could easily overlook that he was gay, Wade was turned into an out and out flamboyent homosexual cliche here.  I can't imagine too many gay people were happy about this portrayal.  It was certainly cringe-worthy to me and I'm not.

Then we have Anders allusions to homosexual persecution which was about as subtle as a nuclear bomb going off in your backyard.  Added to his ring indicator and his attitude whenever he talked with the cat it's surprising that anyone was surprised he turned out to be gay in DAII.

It's a bit hard going back to Awakening with all this.

I never knew Wade was homosexual until I heard it from David Gaider he just seems so uptight, I didn't really think about it.

Also Anders alluded to homosexual persecution? I thought he just alluded to the fact that you shouldn't be locked up because of who you are.

I bet it is ;)

Anders was too whining in DA:2,but in Awakening he was fine, shame he wasn't romance able in it. Still I have no problem with (a) homosexual option(s).

Gender means little at least for me...I would had romance all the new companions in Awakening except for Justice. ;)  I loved how Wade complained. :P

I didn't notice either of those things in Awakenings. Or, if I did, they didn't leave much of an impression, since I have no recollection of either of them.

Perhaps you focused too much on those particular things? Either way, I don't have an issue with including gay characters, or using allegories to have a story include themes related to homosexuality in society.

More than just Wade became more caracature than character in DAA, but I didn't get the homosexual thing. I mean, he wasn't exactly sexual, so... to balk at supposed naked homosexuality is sort of just a projection upon his otherwise non-sexual flamboyant behavior. Effeminate heterosexual men do happen. Maybe I'm remembering wrongly though, particularly since the Anders angle never seems to have arisen at all for me. In any case, I'm not sure why it would keep me from playing through the overwhelming bulk of DAA content (like, the vast majority of the DLC) that doesn't involve interactions with Wade or whatever comment from Anders. *shrug*

So wait...you mention one of the things about Anders was how he talked about his cat. Are you trying to say men who are really affectionate with their pets are gay? I had also always assumed he was talking about persecution towards mages, since that's a pretty massive thing for his character. And it honestly never even crossed my mind that Wade was a homosexual because of how he acted, nor did I ever really care. He just came off as an eccentric, but talented, blacksmith.

I'm not exactly seeing a problem here.

The only gay thing that I noticied with Anders in Awakening is a banter with Oghren :

Spoiler

As for Wade, he's not what we can call a manly man but I never had the impression that he was gay.

Did you keep Anders in the Keep and burn Amaranthine as a male Warden? ;)

As for Wade, I had more of a stereotypical fashion designer vibe coming from him in DAA. DAO he felt more like EA-BioWare (or any developer-publisher relationship).

Come on man, you have to learn to read the text.  Anders might be talking about persecution of mages but what he's REALLY talking about is persecution of homosexuals.  Why? Because in reality no one cares bout the persecution of mages.  It's called subtext.  Unfortunately for the writer here subtext is supposed to be subtle.  Here it's about as subtle as Ed Gein in a nunnery.

The only place where people are "persecuted" for being gay is Dorian's home. No-one cares who you bang, especially in nobility, as long as you produce an heir. And why is it such a problem they "overdid the homosexual angle?"

This is literally the first time I've ever heard of a complaint about Wade's portrayal. He comes off as a pampered artist, ie. the cultured version of the Insufferable Genius.

Somebody sure seems to have "gay" themes on the brain  ...

Anders wasn't any more or less gay than any other companion in DAII. Just like the others, Anders was equally happy to fall for a female Hawke as he was for the male. The OP might have only played as male Hawke and thought because Anders was a little more upfront about starting the flirting than the other male companions that he was the only one or that he didn't go for a female Hawke just as easily and strongly, but trust me; Anders is just as bi or player-sexual as every companion in DAII. In fact, there's even one time that a female Hawke has to use the flirt option or else get negative points from him. I never picked him as the LI for my female Hawke, but I'm sure you'll find plenty others who did in the Anders appreciation thread.

first time I played awakening anders came across as a bit of a womanizer, especially with his comments to valena, so him hitting on my male hawke came out of nowhere for me. most recent playthrough I left him at the keep and burned amaranthine and his atitude when you return made it feel less like they just added it in da2.

I loved wade in origins and awakening, never realized he was meant to be gay though. then again didnt pick up on seamus and ashad either.

Maybe. Ginnis implied as much, but there's not really any evidence.

Wade is the stereotypical clothe designer made smith and Anders felt like a womaniser to me, so I disn''t see it that way.

Also, as sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, not all persecution story are a metaphor for gay persecution, as far as I'm concerned the mage templar story can't be farther from any sexuality topic.

1) Anders is bi, not gay.

2) PLENTY of straight men wear earrings.  The notion that you can guess a man's sexuality based on that is a stereotype, and an extremely stupid one given the numbers of straight men who sport them.

3) Wade's portrayal in Origins was hardly subtle.  They played to the flamboyance stereotype just as much in the main game as in the expansion.

4) Allusions to homosexual persecution?  What?
