It depends. When I saw the penny arcade comic I wanted to kill him. My first playthrough was with a Surana though and I needed a Rogue. It's not hard to see he's working through a lot of pain and isn't completely unreachable, even in the jail cell and without metagaming. So I recruited him.
Best decision I ever made. When I went through with my Queen Cousland, I RPed a backstory for them that they used to play together as kids back in better days.
There's nothing wrong with a son who loves his father (even a complete douchenozzle like Rendon Howe). As you get to know him, it also goes on to show Nate was raised in a very abusive fashion. He does a complete 180 once you talk to Delilah and she sets him straight about what happened.
Admittedly I may not have spared him initially if I had played Awakenings on my Cousland, but being my Surana allowed me to get to know him and he swiftly became my favorite companion in Awakenings.
In the end his ending slide says he saves Fergus Cousland from bandits and the new Teryn is so grateful he bestows some of the former Howe lands back to Nate, who, in turn passes it on to his nephew.
As for 'wanting you dead', a lot of people say things they don't really mean in the heat of the moment. He will also say in nearly the same breath "I had planned on it, but now I just want some of my family's things back."
