I definitely thought he was the joke in a fair number of scenes. Like when he tells his story to some of the Avengers, and no one is all that impressed. The joke is just that he's not on their level (but thinks he is on it).

Again, I think it's more that he's more of the average guy, and the Avengers are all these superhuman weirdo's.
Sam probably would've suffered something similar if he had stuck around longer. And that was pretty much Hawkeyes entire character arc in the film.
In real life it'd be hard to connect with any of the Avengers really.

Yeah, i am seeing speculation that anywhere from 30mins to an hour were cut from AoU. Hopefully we get more on Thor's side adventure into the magical pond. That scene just seemed unnecessary...
