{Laurelin would have to make a Cunning(Cultural Lore) test, but it's an easy one. Target Number 9.}

{I am assuming Mercuriel could also do this test? If so I would like to try.}

{Mercuriel can try, but for him, the Target Number would be 17. The fact that it's glowing faintly suggests that it might be magical, and possibly Keeper-specific.}

Rhys made his way around and through the group to Tessa's side.  Leaning down, he spoke quietly in her ear.

"There are tracks leading away from the encampment toward the southeast.  They're blurred from the rain but they're all elven. That's the way we need to go if we want to find the elves.  It looks like the survivors left before the rain started so they've got a head start on us."

He looked off in that direction, frowning slightly, and shifted his weight to lean on his quarterstaff.  "I didn't see any claw marks in the tracks.  I can't tell if they were harried by the same creatures I saw take out the merc company but there are some heavy drag marks mixed in."

Rhys withdrew to the edge of the group and resumed his surveillance of the area.

Game Post: 06 January 2015

Summary: Roll initiative. The camp is under attack.

{GM note: I'm going to assume that Tempest cast her alarm ward spell around the camp. Hannah didn't say she was doing it, but it's probably standard protocol.}

The night is as cold and wet as the day has been. Fog rises in eerie swirls from the half-frozen ground before drifting into hollows. It's impossible to tell whether the droplets that fall on the tents are a light rain or merely a heavy mist condensing on leaves and branches. Miserable as it is, there is no wind, and the forest is silent. One by one, everyone disperses to his or her tent. The chill and the damp has seeped into the blankets, but they are not too clamy for body heat to help. Eventually, the bedding warms and one by one, you drift off to sleep.

Your slumber is broken several hours later by a loud, pulsing wail:

Tempest's wards have been broken. Someone... or something... has entered the camp.

Tempest would rather have camped... well, just about anywhere besides the ruins of the Dalish camp. There wasn't much alternative, though. Naturally the Dalish had picked the most promising ground, and with night rapidly falling, there was no time to scout around for someplace else to rest.

Still, it made her uncomfortable, sleeping at what was at the very least the site of a violent attack, and more likely the scene for mass murder. Tempest's optimism about finding the Dalish clan alive was unfortunately much diminished after the sight of their ruined camp. The fact that there were no corpses was the opposite of reassuring. An assault of that magnitude would surely have resulted in at least a few deaths. That meant that either the corpses had been removed, more likely by the attackers than the elves' fellows, or... in the worst case of all... those lost had become some sort of undead.

Even if that was true, though, it couldn't change their plans. If they were attacked, they would be safer in an open, defensible campsite than spread out and traipsing through the woods in the dark. Nor did staying awake all night constitute a viable option. They would simply be exhausted when and if an attack did come. No, they would have to try to rest, and trust to the wards Tempest had set and their own senses.

As she crawled into her bedroll and tried to sleep, Tempest thought longingly of her children. It distracted her from her nightly prayers, even, pulling her into thoughts of home when she should have been intent upon the Maker.

When she was younger, she would have loved traveling like this. It would have been nothing more than an exciting adventure, back when she had no real ties. That time was long past, though, and the bonds of home and family pulled strongly on her, making her anxious and heartsick.

This must be easier for the Dalish clans, Tempest thought. Wherever they went, they took home and family with them. It would be much better to see the world with everyone you loved by your side.

Well... maybe not everyone, not always, Tempest corrected herself, thinking of Eshara and Tarl. How agonizing it must be for them to spend so much of their time apart. At least the one mercy of Eshara's condition was that she and Tarl could be together for awhile. Tempest could imagine nothing that would be as comforting for someone so ill as being held in the arms of the person who loved her so. Thank the Maker that Tarl was there to do so.

Tempest murmured another prayer for Eshara's recovery, and for her safety and Tarl's. Then she closed her eyes, tried to imagine that she herself was not so far from home, and drifted off.

She woke with a start to the sound of a wail that could only mean danger.

Beldin awoke instantly at the alarm. He yanked on his boots - ignoring the buckles - and grabbed his axe before he remembered that he was not alone in the tent. Not that it mattered. Manners would wait until the camp was secure. He thrust his right arm through the straps on the back of his shield and darted out into the rain. Armor would have been nice, or even a tunic, but such things took time to put on, and time was something he did not have.

Tessa awoke to an unfamiliar sound outside her tent and unfamiliar rustling inside it. She immediately got her feet under her as she realized the rustling was Beldin reacting to the wailing outside.  Tempest's wards must be working.

As Beldin rushed out of the tent, Tessa swiftly moved to step into her boots.  She grabbed her greatsword and spared a glance at her armor. The time it would take her to get everything buckled on could be time that someone needed her.

She swept out of the tent as she looked around the camp for whatever had  set off the wards.

Rhys had been curled in his blanket under one of the trees, his weapons laying next to him under the blanket to keep them from getting overly wet in the damp weather.  When the wailing began, his eyes snapped open immediately and he stood in a smooth movement, shaking water droplets from his hair and eyelashes.  His bow was already in his hand and he hooked a foot under the staff and flipped it up to his other hand.

He scanned the camp, staring intently in an effort to see through the fog gathered in the hollows.  All-father, it was like trying to stare into a white wall!  He cocked his head and listened, trying to locate the trouble by the noise it made.  He heard the others coming awake as well and knew they would be out of their tents and into the fray shortly.

Tempest really had nothing in the way of armor to speak of, so her night clothes would serve as well as her day clothes. Even in sleep, Tempest was always perfectly modest. Unhappy experience had taught her that there was never a guarantee of sleeping undisturbed.

Her staff was close to hand - given the size of her little tent, everything was close to hand, but she ensured that her weapon in particular was always in easy reach.

As quietly as she could while still moving with reasonable haste, Tempest slipped from her tent, trying to make her bare feet silent on the cold ground. Her best protection was not to be noticed.

(Tempest rolls 18 for stealth.)

Laurelin's eyes opened as an surprised gasp escape her lips.She didn't succumbed to the overwhelming need to sleep despite these exhaustion she felt,not after founding the Dalish camp in such disarray.The veil being particularly thin wasn't a comforting thought either,as it was more than likely to have caused disturbing dreams would her spirit slip in the beyond.
The barrier that Tempest cautiously casted,alerted her and the rest of the camp that they were under attack.She shivered as the magic of the barrier tingled against her skin her vision went blur for a moment and she thought that her heart would leap out of her chest,fast as it was beating.
"Fenedhis!"She muttered under her breath and reached for her staff.If they were about to face whoever was responsible for what happened at the Dalish camp or not remained to be seen.However the thought that it was the former gave her some comfort,perhaps she'd be able to find out what it was that plagued both their people and finally put an end to it.Once and for all.

From nowhere, they came, emerging from the mist like malevolent shades, with jagged teeth and long talons at the end of each finger.

Combat map (please move your pieces where you think they should go, and move your enemy to an adjacent square).

Baddie rolls...

Bartha - Tails, heads (hit once)

Beldin - Tails, heads (hit once)

Etienne - tails, heads (hit once)

Fabian - tails, heads (hit once)

Laurelin - tails, heads (hit once)

Mercuriel - tails, tails (hit TWICE)

Rhys - heads (missed)

Tempest - tails, heads (hit once)

Tessa - heads (missed)

Warriors in full armor can take 7 hits

Rogues in full armor can take 6 hits

Warriors and rogues in no armor can take 5 hits

Mages can take 4 hits

Baddies can take 4 hits

Flip a coin. Tails = hit. If you hit, flip it again. If you get tails again, you get a stunt, which counts as another hit. Same goes for the enemy.

A hit is 1d6 damage, so if you are using a dagger, short sword, or bow, a hit is a hit. If you are using a 1H weapon, a hit counts as 2. If you are using a 2H weapon, a hit counts as 3. Beldin's shield gives him a save vs successful attack.

Post when you can. These guys aren't bright. They're always going to aim for the body.

Yes, it really took me 3 months to post that. I am sorry.

Spoiler

As she skidded to a halt, sliding on the wet grass and mud, Tessa very nearly busted her ass before ending in something of a crouch.

This turned out to be a good thing as what seemed to be a claw or knives or something whooshed above her back, where her guts had just been. Angling her sword upward, Tessa got to her feet and connected with the…thing that had just tried to hit her.

In the dark, she couldn’t really see what the revengers looked like (Tessa could only assume that’s what these were.  She wasn’t ready to contemplate more than one set of horrors in the forest right now), just that they seemed made entirely of teeth and claws.  Looking around quickly, she realized that she couldn’t do a head count in this confusion.

Resolutely, she readied her sword for another swing on the beast in front of her, praying for the best.

{That blow connected. A greatsword counts as 3 hits, so all she needs to do is hit it one more time and it's down. We aren't counting damage points, but interestingly enough, it would have worked out about the same.}
