Philomena stepped out, closing the distance to Mercuriel, but not so close that anyone could be in range to hit her with a sword. "I attack Mercuriel!" she shouted.

Philomena hits with Arcane Lance.

{Mercuriel is now "dying" and cannot take any minor or major action. He may engage in free actions, including speech.}

Combat Training, Round 2

Everyone has made a major action in Round 1, so let's begin Round 2 with Bartha!

Bartha heard Tessa shouting out for a full out charge on Mercuriel. Although it would take Fabian longer to reach Mercuriel, he was the closest at the moment... Therefore, she decided to stay to her target, and close the distance between her and Fabian. Tiptoeing, careful not to step on any branches or dry leaves, she made her way over to him.

Making use of the foliage, she made sure to approach him from behind. She poked his back with her nails, and whispered to him: "Consider yourself stabbed, good ser."

Beldin watched Laurelin attack Mercuriel and slipped from causual notice.

Perception(Sight) Target Number: 14

{If your character is actively searching for stealthed characters and you post as much, you may make an opposition roll. Otherwise, if he gets close to your character, I'll take a look at your predetermined list of rolls.}

Spoiler

{Also, John is in court all day today, so I will post his action. I'm sure he's going to want to elaborate upon his failure to spot Bartha, but that can happen later. He never posted that he was actively looking for stealthed characters, so I'm using a roll from his list. The next roll is a 9, so 9+3=12, not enough to beat Bartha's 20. His Willpower test for surprise is an abysmal 7, nowhere near the 20 target number, so he is surprised.

3d6+1 → [3,2,1,1] = (7)
Willpower=3d6+1

Fabian is surprised, and that wastes his minor action, but he is still capable of a major action. He drops his bow (a free action) and moves to Tessa's position, 12 yards.

After her successful "attack " on Mercuriel,Laurelin moved towards Tempest,who as the healer played an important role in the team.
She slowly raised her staff again preparing for another luminous "attack".

Mercuriel took a seat on the ground and surveyed the "battle" going on around him. He shot Laurelin a smirk and nodded to her in congratulations for her strike on him. He then shifted to look at his remaining teammates.

"Tempest, I'm down. Take cover if you can! Rhys and Bartha stay hidden as much as possible and either take out their healer or warrior if you can!"

Dog, who'd gone unnoticed throughout this entire battle, rushed ahead to do damage to the last person who'd struck Merc, that being Philomena.

(Was the last person who hit Merc, Philomena or Laurelin? Also, Dog is still in play, yes? If so, I am assuming that he would just attack the last person who attacked his master since Merc isn't in the battle anymore to give him orders. Anyway, just let me know what works!)

{Mena is the last person to attack Merc, but dog's attacks really only count as a half attack. We can hash out special attacks later, but dog just isn't going to do as much damage as a greatsword no matter how big his teeth get :D}

(OK! Fixed my post to include Philomena not Laurelin as Dog's focus.)

As the large dog approached her, Philomena was already heading away, in Tempest's direction. "I attack Tempest," she cried, though not as loudly as before. Something about the other mage compelled her to take a softer approach.

Arcane lance hit.

((Flipped a coin! Heads wins!))

As Tempest moved toward Mercuriel, she was simultaneously hit by mock "spells" from the two other mages.

She dramatically pressed the back of one hand to her forehead and clutched at her throat with the other.

"I AM KILLED!" she shrieked theatrically, then tumbled to the ground. "Tell the good people of Vintiver my death... was not... in vain...!"

Tempest giggled a little as she lay "dead" on the field of battle.

Philomena covered her mouth to stifle her laughter at Tempest's theatrics. For a moment, she'd almost forgotten that this was merely a game and not a more serious strategic battle.

She offered her hand to the "fallen" mage. "Time to raise the dead, yes?"

Tempest smiled and accepted Philomena's hand to rise to her feet.

"Thank you," she said. "And well played."

She picked a few leaves out of her hair and brushed off her clothing as she awaited further comment or instruction from Beldin.

Mercuriel smiled at Tempest's display and chuckled.

"So what am I? Yak's meat? Would either of you fine ladies care to assist me?"

He held out his own hand imploringly while grinning from ear to ear.

Laurelin smiled back at Mercuriel as soon as she realized that he was congratulating her.
Her grin turned into laughter at Tempest's performance.
She approached the dark haired mage,giggling and clapping slowly.

Tessa's eyes widened at Tempest, then creased as she laughed aloud, a surprisingly rich and vibrant sound.

Still smiling, she crossed her arms, and waited for Beldin to address the party.

Tempest chuckled at what Mercuriel said, and reached down to offer him a friendly hand to his feet.

"You led us well," she said. "At least we can say we 'died' gloriously."

Mercuriel took Tempest's hand and lifted himself to a standing position. He quickly let go of her hand so as not to give her any awkward feelings and moved to stand next to Laurelin. He wasn't sure why he did this, it sort of happened in voluntarily.

"I thank you for your kind words, Tempest, but I'm afraid I must concede that the mage ladies got the best of me." He gestured to Philomena and Laurelin, adding a wink in for Laurelin at the end.

Laurelin furrowed her brow in confusion at Mercuriel's request,she sighed and walked towards the elvhen man.
Silently,she reached for his hand but Tempest had already assisted him,to her surprise,she chuckled.
"For a "dead" man,you complain way too much Lethallin."She said teasingly.

He was already standing but he took Laurelin's proffered hand anyway.

"I don't think I complain nearly enough, Laurelin," he said a bit huskily. He dropped her hand after a moment but didn't remove his gaze from hers.

Laurelin laughed,the "battle" had improved her mood vastly. She looked down at her hand and then back at Mercuriel,meeting his gaze.
she smirked and then silently moved towards Tessa,also waiting for Beldin's announcement.

Beldin popped out of stealth behind Philomena* and said loudly, "Well done everyone! Well done indeed!"

He walked closer to the center of the group.

"Bartha, you should have seen the look on Fabian's face when you made your appearance!" he laughed, then went on. "Tessa, you did a great job directing your team. I know it's hard keeping track of everybody and defending yourself at the same time, and you were superb. Laurelin, Tempest, you chose your hiding places wisely. You were just close enough to attack the middle without leaving cover, but you were either out of range of the enemy archers or they didn't have a clear shot at you. Well done. Philomena, excellent use of discretion, in deciding when to leave cover and press for the attack. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have encouraged that, but you had Fabian moving in fast to cover you, so well done both of you. Mercuriel, that was an outstanding bit of restraint, not charging Tessa and pushing yourself beyond your ranged support. Rhys, you picked a good perch for your target practice, I'll give you that. Laurelin and Philomena both, you did fine work flushing the other mage out of cover. Every single one of you made at least one outstanding decision that helped your team as a whole, and you should all be proud of yourselves."

He paused for a moment to let the praise sink in.

"That doesn't mean that we should get complacent, however," he said. "There are a few tiny areas that we might want to review at some later date. Tessa, you should probably have held back more in the first few moments, not advanced so far across the field. Always arrive with enough momentum to fight. Fabian, however was right to charge when he did. With Rhys and Bartha with no other targets but the mages, that was the best thing you could have done. Mena, when Tessa told you to stay back, you might have stayed back a little too far. No one could hit you, but you couldn't hit anyone else, either. Not without leaving cover. It's a minor quibble at best, and not one I'm going to fault you for, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it. The only thing I really have to complain about happened in the last moments. Rhys, I know you're an archer, and a bloody accurate one, but when Tempest left cover, you should have gone out first. You could have given Laurelin and Philomena someone to hit besides Tempest, and that might have changed everything. And Bartha, that was an impossible decision you had to make at the end, and I would not have wanted to be in your shoes. Do you go after the close, easy target (yes, Fabian, you were a sitting duck), or do you go after the mages? I'm still not sure which I would have done. But the important thing is that all of you were working together as a team. There are a few opportunities to improve our cohesion, yes, but every single one of you should consider this a victory. I don't know if this means anything, but I am proud of all of you."

*His 14 beats her 12, so she's surprised if you want to play it, otherwise, we'll just carry on.

Losing her smile, Tessa nodded. "You're absolutely right. If this had been for real I'd have put everyone in danger with my recklessness.  I'll think about that for next time."

She knew it was because she hadn't taken this drill as seriously as she should have, and that was no example to be setting.  This was proof enough that these combat exercises were necessary to make them all better and more cohesive.

I don't know if this means anything, but I am proud of all of you.

Tessa looked around at everyone and nodded, as if to herself. Against all common sense, these folks, this raggle taggle group, were pretty formidable and Tessa was glad to be a part.

"It means a great deal, Beldin," Tempest said. "And it is encouraging to see how capable my fellow party members are. I believe when the time comes, we will be able to come together to do what must be done. Thank you for organizing this drill for us. I think it was very necessary practice, and will help us when we must fight side by side."

Acknowledging the whole group, she added, "Well done, everyone."
