Who's diving right into Nightmare on their first playthrough? I've smashed through nightmare in DA:O and DA2 on later playthroughs and truly enjoy the challenge, but I don't want the difficulty to define my initial experience. How do you think the new health and healing system will effect nightmare, and will you be taking the challenge head-on?

I think I will start out on hard mode and go from there maybe on my 2nd time around I will do nightmare either that or 3rd. I think nightmare this time around will be insane more pre game I think you will have to make sure you craft the best gear for each area.
I like doing everything in a game anyways so this really won't be a issue for me.

For me it depends on how they handle friendly fire this time around. I usually dive into the hardest difficulty mode right away. However, this bit me hard in DA2, with their friendly fire changes. Since they decided to make friendly fire include melee weapons, I found the game more frustrating than playable. Nothing like just about winning a tough battle only to have Fenris with his over-sized sword come over and kill your entire party with a single blow while trying to kill the last standing enemy that had just sliver of life left.
Hence, I never did a nightmare playthrough of DA2 unfortunately. I had to use mods to increase the difficulty in other ways that didn't include giving friendly fire to moronic AI attacks.

The problem wasn't so much that melee attacks did ff, it was the asymmetric health and damage values between your party and enemies.

Yeah I think I'll be doing the same, I'm a bit limited with the time I'll have with the game as I'm away at college and the PS4 is at home so I'll be trying to make the most of what I've got initially. Hard seems like a good compromise.

They've shown us that friendly fire is a toggle-able option and is not tied to difficulty this time around.

Will start on hard, then stream a Nightmare limited reload elimination on twitch after Ive enjoyed the story.
Maximum 10 reloads due to deaths
Each reload (team wipe) - and one companion is permanently locked out from use (strawpoll or randomized) until only the Inquisitor left.
Spent loadings or unable to complete = start completely over and delete save.

I was planning on starting on Hard before I saw the last couple videos, probably going for Nightmare now. Either that or I'll do Hard and not use taunt/guard and barrier, but I don't like limiting myself unless I absolutely have to.

Definitely, Friendly Fire + Nightmare mode seems like it will be the most fun way to play this game!
How did you find Nightmare on DA:O compares to DA2? I found DA2 a lot more challenging due to the potion cooldowns. Died so many times to those damn invisible backstabbing rogues, especially at lower levels. You have to run away really far kiting them until they come out of stealth.

Haha yes, I loved that. I think for DA2 and Inquisition the way to play with friendly fire will be to disable all AI tactics and micromanage every party member's actions. Otherwise, Fenris goes postal on everybody ![]()

DA2 Nightmare was a blast, literally;) Move my companions out of the way. I liked how I couldn't just spam aoes.. had to be strategic. Going to try that with DAI, though if Ironbull is a Reaver he'll benefit from hellfire from above, leaving long range Rogues and Cole's hat will protect him..

Well on Nightmare and Hard if your toons die and you revive them after battle or during, they only have 10% health, compared to %25 and %50 on normal and easy, respectively.
I'll be doing Normal. I like a decent challenge but I don't like the challenge to get in the way of story and character enjoyment. Or, a barrier from those things that prevents me from just having fun. However, we all see fun from a different perspective, so if Nightmare or Hard is your style, do what you think is most fun!

I think I've decided to start out on normal. If I feel like its isn't enough of a challenge then I'll bump it up to hard. I'll eventually attempt to beat it on nightmare, but like others have said, I don't want the difficulty to ruin my overall enjoyment of the game.

DA2 was definitely a greater challenge on nightmare than DA:O. Certain specs like Arcane Warrior and Spirit Warrior were so broken a lot of the games harder encounters were easier than they should've been, I found the Harvester to be a joke. DA2 with countless waves spawning all over the place and wiping your more squishy characters (**** those assassins) made for more of a challenge imo. The challenge bosses in both games were probably the hardest encounters for me ie. Flemeth, High Dragon, Xenbeck etc. but even those were usually more of a matter of being geared and leveled than skilled.

Nice! Replaying DA2 now so I can complete the Keep without spoilers (didn't quite finish the game before) and it's even harder than I remembered it, or maybe I forgot the best 1337 NoScope strats. You gotta love those assassins!

DA2 was totally playable on Nightmare, once I stopped ALL companions from auto-attacking. ![]()
Since I micro-mange every battle anyway, this didn't create a particular hardship for me.

No. Why? Well, I'm not a big fan of combat in games. More often than not, I find it an absolute waste of time and I'd much rather get back to the story or just explore the world. I don't have time for challenging battles! (Now, this isn't always the case. I have actually enjoyed the combat in the Mass Effect series, Jade Empire, Dishonoured, Kingdoms of Amalur and Skyrim, but that's about it.)
Maker knows if I did up the difficulty, I'd spend most of the game trying not to die. That's not what I call fun, which is why I usually play on Casual. The faster I can get through combat, the more time I can spend on everything else the game has to offer. That's just how I play games and yes, I consider my play style "fun." You don't like it? That's fine. You play your way, and I'll play mine. Somehow I doubt they conflict.

This. If FF is a toggle in nightmare and it's frustrating like this I'm turning it off. I battled my two-hand warriors more than the enemy themselves in DA2. I'm definitely going to nightmare first. I also hope Bioware makes truly tactical/strategic battles and not pure tank'n'spank enemies with endless HP. I hated that design in DA2 because it stretched boss fights out much longer than they needed to be. A damage increase and a small HP increase makes sense...just not endless HP encounters to compensate for poor design. I'd rather see something unique to nightmare like AI attacks you can't see in other difficulties.

If mage AOE deals friendly fire then melee AOE must also deal friendly fire.

I thought that DA:O and DA2 nightmare were pretty easy overall aside from some IMO broken DA2 bosses (not so much the item check with the Ancient RW but definetly Corypheus). I'm not sold that I get the DA:I mechanics enough to jump into nightmare from the get-go but I'll probably start with it and see how it goes for me.

DA2 was alot easier than DAO, save for nightmare but thats cause the cheapness of FF.
This time FF is toggable so there is that. I wanted to start on hard, buts its tough. I mean there is the achievements for beating the game on hard and one on nightmare without lowering difficulty. I usually dont like nightmare but I want achievements lol.

I'll do normal and focus on the story. If the combat isn't complete crap like previous DA games, I'll be doing a playthrough on Nightmare at some point.
