Amnesia: The Dark Descent immediately pops to mind.

The OC didn't scare me a great deal, but it certainly has the dark atmosphere. The Justine DLC did very well(and was scott free), and quite a few of the Custom Stories are about the same quality as the original. Anything done by Russ Money is probably going to be a winner.

Thief series. The originals.

Thief 3's Robbing The Cradle mission in particular comes to mind, especially the basement. Combining the frantic lighting and the enemies' movements, I about turned white the first time.

Dark Souls 1.

Aye. If the name was any indication, they do dark very well. New Londo Ruins, and as previously mentioned, Tomb of Giants are very intense. My Ex-BSNer friend SeaGloom mentioned the game was great at keeping her on her toes.

Has Five Nights At Freddy's been mentioned? It's frightening enough.

Never played it but definitely familiar with it. The likely inspiration is almost more terrifying than the game itself, I'd think. Truth is sometimes scarier than fiction.

Both Steam and GoG are still doing halloween sales, by the way. System Shock 2, Fallout 3, VtmB for all of 5 Bucks. o.O

Alien: Isolation ...?

The answer... is yes.

Right, I was supposed to add descriptions for my choices. I'll just write abridged ones this time.
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Take the First-Person Roleplaying experience of Deus Ex, The Histories/Writing of Arcanum, throw some supernatural insanity in there, throw em' in a blender, and you have a classic cRPG. It's not that scary, but it's a perfect game if you like dark atmosphere and the supernatural. The Must-Have patch can be found here.
  • Penumbra: Black Plague. Before Amnesia: TDD, Penumbra was sort of an indie version of condemned. The last chapter seemed more like an inspiration for portal, and most of the first one was exploring caverns. Black Plague tapped more into SS2's wandering-around-sci-fi shtick while dealing with unearthly lifeforms. It had a very clever way to "beat" the game and had influence on holding/grabbing with the mouse in real-time for FP Adventure games.
  • American McGee's Alice. It's Alice in Wonderland on LSD... more LSD, I mean. It had surprisingly satisfying combat/platforming/set pieces, plenty of creativity, and some of the most disturbing stuff I've seen in a game.
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins. Basically What Chris said on Page 1.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC. Take a setting somewhat similar to Fallout, throw in survivalist mechanics(Taking care of Food/Water/Bleeding), an extremely paranormal storyline, and a major graphical overhaul through mods, and you have a seriously scary game. The enemy designs are definitely in macabre/bizarre territory, and it won't take much to feel antsy in the more claustrophobic indoor areas. My one and only gripe with the game(at least for SoC) is the difficulty seems a bit too much with ranged combat.

Being chased is the biggest scare/rush for me so Amnesia makes the list if just for the flooded tunnel.

L4D2 too, because nothing is scarier than zombies that run.

Fatal Frame is probably the most genuinely creepy game I've ever played.

Doom 3

Guild Wars/2 Not for scariness but for fun in the spirit of the holiday

I'd add Demon's Souls to the list. It definitely has some spooky locations (Valley of Defilement, Tower of Latria) and creepy bosses (Fool's Idol, Leechmonger, Maneaters, Armor Spider), Overall, I find its atmosphere the most unsettling out of all Souls games.

I was hoping someone who's played that would bring it up :-p

3-2 In Tower of Latria especially. They used a technique I've never seen before, where the level space is absolutely huge but you can only tell the size of it by the dimly lit torches far in the distance. Besides that and the bridge you're walking on, it's nearly pitch black. I was rather blown away. 5-2 in Valley of Defilement does something similar, but I'd say it's more grim/bleak than terrifying. Still love it anyhow.

Maneater was scary until I realized it was a less balanced version of the Gargoyle Fight >.>

Doom 3 used to really creep me out. Especially when playing in a dark room with candles...
