Male Hereald of Andraste.

Because I think it's implied that this is the event, and what happens in Thedas with both the Inquisition and the title of Herald is, to a certain extent, what you choose to make of it. In that context, giving the player the choice of race and gender is entirely appropriate. After all, there is the old saw in the real world that "God works in mysterious ways." Well, who's to say that the Maker or Andraste or some random glowy tart in the sky who puts a shimmery, green rift-killing brand on palm can't do likewise? And after that ... what you make of it is up to you within the context of the story.

I think it's a cool side benefit of this plot. I always found the matriarchal nature of the Chantry one of it's most annoying aspects, and now we have a chance to rectify that by inserting *hee hee* some much-needed masculinity into the faith.
It would be even better if we could nominate a male Divine as well, but that's probably off the table.

We might still have a divine, assuming Justinia V is not dead.
But I assume we get to define what the role of the Herald of Andraste actually means.

It's not like the rest of Thedas is exactly friendly to the opposite sex, e.g. Dwarves, Qunari, Orlais.
If by ''the opposite sex'' you mean MEN, then yes. Rivain's female mages are more prestigious and its leadership is usually female because ''they are just better lol''. The Qunari prefer their men out fighting their wars while the women sit at home and handle ''administration'' (read: they are the leadership, much like the Salarian system)
Dwarves may be an exception in the other direction. But most of the human lands seem to be quite egalitarian when it comes to gender (not race obviously) from what we've seen of Ferelden and Kirkwall. Dalish clans are also not really the hunter-gatherer type, as women can be hunters, Keepers and pretty much anything else.

Any way one could use being a male herald - if supporting the Tevinter Imperium - politically? As leverage or propaganda?

That's still ruining it.
Generally when a religion documents the history of it's movement, it doesn't edit things out for the sake of present and unrelated political realities.
Generally it does as soon as it grows in power and gets an agenda
(the Gospel of Judas comes to mind amongst other things)
but I agree with you on the point you try to make regarding the Andrastian belief ![]()

If the Chantry condemns us at first does that make us like public enemy number one? Would we be harassed in towns trying to accomplish things that fall within the Chantry's grasp? I know without the Templars they're a bunch of old ladies essentially but there has still got to be a large portion of the population that would see you as a undesirable while another part will think of you as the herald right?

Absolutely. I think we will be blamed for the outbreak of the demons at first. Add in an excommunication, charges of heresy, etc, and the world hates us.

There biggest problem with us would be the fact that we are seen as the herald of Andraste to the people as this would possibly give us more power then the Chantry in all matters religious (Andrastian). So they will oppose us in the beginning for sure. It will be the people who decide if they go with the ruling class (the chantry) or the Inquisition.
This conflict lies at the foundation of the entire game I believe as you need to gain power and influence to progress the story.
I don't think people aka the common folk will hate you to start with, they might be hesitant and cautious. It's the status quo, the big players in the world who will oppose you with more vigor and I think this will increase as the game progresses until you can get to some sort of consensus with said party.
But that's what I think... We'll see

So, what will it mean if Andraste chose a man as her Herald?
She was tired of living a settled, monogamous life with the maker and wished to invite a third party to spice things up after centuries of dead chemistry.
Or, you know, the figure actually isn't Andraste ![]()

I think your race is a more concerning factor to the Chantry, your class if you're a mage. While women are the priests in the Chantry, men aren't discriminated or subject to prejudice. True they are blamed and condemned for Maferath's 'betrayal', I have yet to witness given hassle being male.
Being a human male mage and actively declaring yourself Her Herald will certainly be amusing. I can't wait!

Would be interesting to come across any remnants of that "Andraste is resurrected dragon" cult.

The Chantry has been clueless since day one, so I wouldn't put too much stock into anything that comes from that cult.

This post will contain Spoilers, you have been warmed.
So, AngryJoe posted a video of the prologue where a Chantry official says "Justinia is dead. We must elect a sucessor and follow her commands."
Now, the interesting here is that AngryJoe was playing a male Inquisitor and, much like in the quote above, the text in the game emphasized the "her". Meaning, that I might have be correct.
Or maybe the Brother is having issue with following the Inquisitor's orders, regardless of gender.

Sounds more like him wanting the Inquisition to be back under Chantry control than anything else.
