I've been reading some of the press on the DA Keep public beta launch.

And I'm struck by how many people have got the wrong end of the stick, failing to understand that the Keep:

  • IS: a world state creator
  • NOT: a save game uploader

Even sites like IGN are giving the wrong impression:

'you sign in with Origin, and then it uses that to detect the choices you've made across the two previous games.'

The Keep itself is very clear: 'The Keep does not import your saved game'.

But the misunderstandings roll on, on game site comments entries and articles such as IGN.

I find comments such as 'it doesn't work, my saves are not loaded' very annoying.

Where I had a login to some of those sites, I've been correcting misunderstandings with you own comments, but this could be a long battle !

I think one of the causes of these misconceptions is the fact that "importing" saves is still sorta-ish required to enter PCs' names, race, class, origin and portraits for "custom heroes". Things that, to me, would be far more intuitive to have in the keep directly as world-state creation is its only purpose.

The only item that I'll concede "may" be problematic of these is the method of how to upload a portrait. Then again, since the developers themselves said that it doesn't have much purpose beyond flavour, by scratching it I really don't see the difficulty in entering the other items right there in the Keep.

(The fact that syncing LBSN's character profiles with the Keep works less than well doesn't exactly help either.)

I'm contribute by posting some red text in my sig. I know some people have read it so hopefully spreading the word will aid in this.

The other problem is people don't know what syncing actually does and think it's the same as the old save import.

Part of the problem is the use of the term synching. The Keep team means synching BSN data with the Keep. People hear it and think synching choices. They should have just used on boarding or transferring. >.>

well it could be worse, they could have just said 'import data!" which really would have messed with people.

At least there's now a "The Keep does not import your saved game" banner on top of the Tapestry. It's obviously still not enough (it's a bit small for one thing), since I've already seen several people saying that their choices weren't synced, but it's better than nothing.

The little notification that the Keep does not import your saved game, only appeared in the last couple of days.

I for one was indeed under the impression that your main choices would import along with your hero. This was the whole point of importing from BSN.

Now that it has been made clear that in every case, you will need to select every single choice in the Keep, I see no reason at all for characters to be imported to the Keep.

I would however really love to be enlightened in this...

[edit]

In my opinion, they should just scrap the entire import facility from previous games. It serves no purpose whatsoever.

They just should add a large infobox before syncing the profiles. I think that should clear some things up.

The problem stems from several months ago when the devs said they were looking into a way to import choices so that notion some how latched on to everyone that they were going to find a way. It was announced about two and half months ago that they weren't going to be able to do it, but only those who followed the beta closely knew.

The sync mostly servers an aesthetic purpose and from what we see on here, it means a lot to some people to take their heroes with them, even if it's just a name and appearance.

Yeah, the only problem with that last part is that neither your [given] name nor your [character] appearance will be taken into DAI, so again, completely pointless.

[edit]

Ok maybe I am judging too harshly. You will be able to go into the Keep and in your World State of choice, see your Warden and Hawke names and portraits.

But the Keep is not a "game" with a requirement for immersion so still completely pointless to me.

The name may show up in codex, but that's just a theory.

Though I'm assuming - as it won't be a retro-fit - that the Keep does essentially upload save data from DAI ? As your choices will be reflected in new tiles?

I've seen maybe five people who missed the banner, which is pretty good since I was expecting 50+ thread or posts on the subject. I mostly credit the banner.

That's the plan

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating to see, especially since they have been talking about the Keep for so long now.

If it's truly a world state creator then there should be a context given for each possible choiice, and not just "HE died" "HE survived", without any explanation on who the hell that is, and what his role was.

The way I see it, it's not a world state creator it's a manual save reconstruction application, which is useless if you never played the previous games, or don't remember all of your choices.

There is context button. It's not extensive, but it's there. The little "?" mark.
