I like him well enough, but he is rather uninteresting when it comes right down to it. As others have mentioned, I harbor a slight resentment over the fact that he is taking up a companion spot in Inquisition, especially since he is filling up the "dwarf quota".

He's a good friend, an excellent comrade and an exceedingly nice guy, but I'm just not that interested in him. I'm not brimming with excitement to meet him in Inquisition like I am for some of the other companions.

All that being said, this tile from the Keep did warm the cockles of my heart.

With the world going mad, I suppose it's not the worst thing to have a master marksman spymaster as your constant, even if he is a bit boring. A bit of flotsam to cling to in the storm.

lol I would say that he was the best companion which DA2 had to offer, because all others were awful... and yet he was at best mediocry in comparison with DA:O.

Well there is no pressure to like him, but he is the one that is best written and voice acted in my opinion. Alot of nuance in his voice and he gets the point across. He is also a dashing rogue that actually has Hawkes back from beginning to end. He never puts the relationship in danger needlessly and he listens to his/her opinion and input. I would say Varric is my favourite DA companion, or almost! Alistair is just the best.

I commented elsewhere on this forum expressing my dislike of his character. My reasons being that in general, the witty banter character in games almost always earn my dislike. I find their dialogue to sound like theyre trying too hard. However I always had him as a character in DA2 solely because I still liked him more than all of the other companions. Except for Bethany and Isabela who were my other two companions when available. Anders usually took up the other slot when any of them werent available. Only because I needed a mage, and he was a Grey Warden and I love them.

Anyway yeah. I dont like Varric. Alistair as well for the same reason. Though at least with Alistair hes redeemable because of his deflecting issues with humour being a defence mechanism.

Could we just not replace Varric with Shale in Inquisition?

Like I said, I don't mind Varric, but I would much prefer to see someone else in his companion slot.

Note: NOT A HATE THREAD

I swear it seems like I'm the only one who finds Varric to be lack luster. I kept him at the hanged man for most of my DA2 playthroughs and intend to keep him at Skyhold for DA:I. I don't understand why I dislike him so much (maybe it's cuz he and Carver were responsible for all of my deaths in DA2 >.>). Every time he talks I just roll my eyes, and not in the "oh you" way. I guess I want to see what peoples reasons are for liking/disliking him.

AHHH A VARRIC HATER... kill it KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

Nah, it's cool. Everyone has different lifes. Like Bull, there's many who go "EWW!", but just as many that go "Grrr." (self include ;)) Personally I liked Varric. You can be a total ass, but he won't leave you, and THAT'S a true friend. The only thing I didn't like about Varric, was his looks. He imo looks sooo much better.

But yeah. I was also very disappointed at Varrics inclusion as a party member in DA:I. His inclusion in the game wouldnt have bothered me, but I would have rather had all new companions. Or at least one we didnt get to spend much time with (Ariane, or Nathaniel would have been prime) but in the end its not the end of the world.

Bull is another character I was disappointed with. Though not very much so. I wanted a Qunari mage, but in the end any Qunari companion makes me happy. And I know I will enjoy him.

Varric will be much more polarizing in this game, I think. People like him because he's cheery and helpful and doesn't question you, but he's mostly in his comfort zone there. Take him out, he's gonna be resentful.

I also think Varric has hints of condescension and passive agressiveness in da2 that will come out more. I've said this before, but Varric strikes me as a bit of a control freak--and in da2 he has all the ability to control things on a game level (his resources) and a meta level (he literally controls the narrative).

I think I will dislike him more in da3 and I think he'll be a more interesting character for it.

Spoiler

+1 for The Labyrinth Hoggle reference
I never realized... he does kinda look like Varric's great-great-grandfather or something. XD

I always liked Varric, but then again I've never really disliked any companions and I can always find reasons to like them.

The only reason I'm slightly annoyed is not with Varric himself, but as some mentioned, with the fact that he's taking up a character slot in DAI. I would have preferred a new character or at least someone who hasn't previously been a companion.

I think the reasons he's popular in the fandom include the following:

1. He's got a sense of humor. In Bioware's fanbase, this tends to override a lot of traits. Notice that one commonality with all the villains in Bioware games? No sense of humor. If a character has a noticeable sense of humor, we're supposed to like them. But if you're not fond of overt snarkiness and cracking jokes, Varric will probably not appeal.

2. He's not judgmental. Man, woman, dwarf, human, elf, blond, redhead, mage, lyrium-infused, bloodmage, templar, most of it doesn't matter to Varric, at least not in DAII. He takes people as they are, doesn't demand things of them, seldom asks favors, and usually strives for mutually beneficial arrangements. This tends to make a guy a likable person to most people because he doesn't offend others, at least not without good reason.

3. He's not self-absorbed, instead focusing on his friends, including the PC. As much as Varric talks, we seldom hear him say things of note about himself. He's mostly about other people. He helps Daisy adjust to the alienage and keeps the street thugs away from her. He keeps the Carta off Blondie. He tells Hawke's story, not his own. He helps other people, even his traitorous brother when it comes right down to it. When did Hawke ever ask Varric to do something and help with something, and Varric said "Nope, I won't do it."? I can't recall it happening.

4. He's loyal. No matter what happens. Side with mages or templars, be a total a**hat or the epitome of selflessness and virtue, Varric stands at your side through everything. He may even dislike Hawke in many ways, but respects him/her to a fault. This kind of loyalty is difficult not to find endearing for most people.

Those are all traits that most people like to have in friends. And having them all in one particular friend is the proverbial jackpot. Friends like the above are hard to find, and tend to be the cream of the crop. Hence, Varric is popular.

I don't see Varric so much as a role model. I don't really aspire to be anyone other than myself.

However he certainly ticks all the right boxes to be one.

He ticks so many ideal traits that there is no way a guy like him could exist in real life.

But hey. If the ideal traits are those of Varric's then phew. Thank goodness for that.

I was worried that Scarface and Don Corleone were the ideal. What a horrible world we would be living in if that were the case.

He is kind of like the Garrus of Dragon age. That companion that everyone likes, not too mean, but not too nice, and he knows how to be cool. I think the only trait about his character that bothered me is that he was too lenient about the companions and never seemed to care when they did something bad.

I disagree. Varric is a good guy, but he's not perfect and selfless. Its in his best interest to foster good relationships with people because knowing people and getting them to like him is his business. Yes, he genuinely cares, but he uses that caring as a tool as well as a trait. And he's very invested in his comfort and general stability. Those are not bad traits, but ones that conflict with any kind of character who wants to change things in ways that are fast or too much for him.

Varric hides all that well. He's not antagonistic, but he does get passive aggressive if you rival him or choose decisions he doesn't like. Shrug. I think people tend to flatten him a bit, just like they do Garrus, because he never outright disagrees with the player.

He's pretty much always going to be one of my favourite characters. The way he appears a sleazy criminal business man on the exterior but is in truth one of the most loyal bros you can ask for has always made him incredibly endearing to me. And the way he subtly looked out for everyone in DA2, like keeping thugs away from Merrill with money from his pocket etc. pretty much sealed him as aces in my book.

Veeia's comments are perf, totally agree with them. Varric's not perfect by any means. He's not necessarily boring either, he has some depth, but it can definitely be expanded and I hope that will be the case with DAI. I have a feeling it will be, I think we're going to get some interesting missions that involve him. As far taking up a slot... gotta say out of everyone I'm glad it was him.

I feel like Varric was designed from the grounds up with being the player's BFF as priority in DA2. Smooth as hell, easy going, gels with (almost) everyone, sense of humor, non-judgemental, heart of gold, infallible(almost), who can do little wrong. Personally I would like to see some actual character development in DAI. This kind of applies to all the companions, but Varric especially, since we already know him so well.

He was alright, though no Oghren.

See, I liked Varric since he was more subtle and had a more interesting personality than other Dwarfs in Dragon Age. A story-teller, archer, beardless... he broke a lot of stereotypes about the Dwarven race which was refreshing and I believed he was very well written. Oghren was a fart-joke on legs with a really uninteresting background and overall motive.

The criticism about DA2 companions being less interesting than those of DA: O is also a bit strange; obviously characters like Alistair, Morrigan and Shale were amazing, but I think people overestimate how boring/cliche some of them were. I'm not really lamenting the possible absence of Wynne, Zevran or Sten for example.  As much as it would be neat to see them to pay homage to the first game, I think people overestimate how well they were actually written, whereas I found the characters of DA2 explored themes of morality in a better fashion - probably due to how the game was framed around the Mage/Templar conflict rather than the battle vs. the Darkspawn.

I did not like him right away because my expectations were high, based on how much I had heard of him before playing DA2, and he did not "wow" me like a few DA:O companions did.

But I am a fan now. I like him better than I liked Garrus in Mass Effect. Only outstanding issue I have with him is he feels too "modern" and was one of a few things in that game that contributed to that changed atmosphere I did not care for.
