I disagree. It's not in Varric's best interest to pay "a fortune" to keep the street thugs off of Merrill when she wanders the alienage at night, nor really to be friends with Hawke, or any of his/her associates at all. His friends are not a financial boon. It's not like Merrill is all that valuable to him, or gives him anything(directly) in return for his help. The fact is that he cares for Daisy, as well as his other friends, more than himself. Sebastian and Carver are the only ones of Hawke's entourage who we can safely say are not friends of Varric. But he'll help them because of Hawke, and that friendship/respect he has with him/her.
Oh, I don't mean that every action he takes is motivated by profit. He's going to be nice and accommodating to most people because that's good business, but he also genuinely enjoys other people and can grow to care about them deeply. I mean, after Act 1/2, his relationship to most everyone is on a friendship/family level, not a business partners level. I just don't think he's selfless or perfect or even tempered all the time. I think he's controlled and methodical. He tries to take care of others and tell their stories instead of letting people take care of him or tell his story. (And yes, compared to the drama llamas in Da2, that's a bit of a relief, but it's also kind of sad to me). And a wonderful friend, of course. But he's got sharper edges, and we're definitely going to see them in da3, imo.
