Varric was ever so 'meh' to me. I didn't hate him, but I certainly didn't like him and I never felt that he should represent my story. (When he turned out to be the voice in the ISS, I started sending requests, and encouraging others, to have an option between him and Leliana, as that's the storyteller who deserves, in my mind, to tell my Warden's story, and frankly I'd prefer her to tell my Champion's too).

The sarcastic, witty rogue type chafed with me with Zevran, and again with Varric.... for some reason though, Isabela never ceases to amuse me. What was even more compounding is that, reminding me of Liara, there was so much 'HERE TAKE HIM! TAKE HIM!', when it comes to his lack of confrontation, the intros of BOTH DLCs (especially in Legacy where I could have a party without him and he'd still show up), and the forcing him into my party in the Deep Roads, that I got even more sick of him than I should've. I agree with some of the previous posters, it feels like Varric was supposed to be the Champion's best friend regardless of my feelings on the matter, and that never not bothers me.

My issue with Varric is that he basically never had an arc. He's designed to be loveable and inoffensive, but then he's also the narrator—and not necessarily a reliable one either. The Keep tile is basically 'Did Varric like Hawke or not?' It might be phrased differently, but that's basically what it's for. That said, I did like Varric a lot, but I certainly never found him especially interesting within the game itself. If you get a bit meta and start picking apart some of the game's odd inconsistencies then you can have a lot of fun with Varric's character and reading his various foibles and insecurities into the way the game actually runs. But, like I said, that's pretty meta.

I'm happy Varric is returning in DA:I, though, because he might actually get some character development now.

Varric is the least hated character I think. He is the dragon age version of garrus. He is cool funny...okay he doesn't hold a candle to garrus but you get the point.

Garrus at least had some degree of complexity, although he also suffered in my eyes because he's your mandated best friend. Hopefully Varric will find some this time.

All this criticism of Varric and Garrus over their loyalty to you. Bioware spends most games wacking your character's emotional state between a rock and a hard place and twice they think, "Okay, we need one character in here who the pc can count on to have their back regardless or choices," and of course some of the bioware fanbase is like, "Just not angsty enough."

This is why we can't have nice things.

My emotional states remains mostly the same all the time, I don't need support. Garrus was pretty cool though

You are not alone in your dislike of him OP, I can't stand him either. He only ever really comes out during parts of the game were its mandatory to take him along, other then that he is in the Hanged Man doing stuff and by that I mean showing off his chest hair to the ladies.

lol It is okay to not really like characters and talk about it. Lord knows I've suffered through enough "Fenris is a whiny emo anime character" threads.

I just find both characters boring. Nothing really bothers them. They're always super cool in every situation. You could slap them in the face, and they'd just be all, "Hey, Shepard/Hawke, why'd you do that? Are you mad about something? Lemme buy you a beer." Dude I just slapped you in the face. Come on!

Some players find that endearing. They love the fact that there's a character who's always got their back. That's totally cool.

Others just find those characters a little dull and kind of feel annoyed at having the "auto-best friend" slot taken, no matter who they REALLY feel is their character's best friend.

In ME my Shepard's BFF was Liara; luckily she's pretty much coded to be his LI, so those stupid lame hugs actually make sense. And then at the end of ME3 there's the "There's no Shepard without Vakarian" line, and I'm like, huh? Dude I hardly took you anywhere in three games. I seriously barely know you."

Same with Varric. You can choose all aggressive/rude responses towards him, but he still sticks around after 7 years. Why? Lord if I know! Cause he's your auto-best bud lol "But I don't even like you!" Too bad :P

I like Varric as a Character. I just hate the DA community when it comes to Varric. Even this thread leads to people making chest hair references as if it was clever... That horse had been beat to death and then some. It was not even that funny in the beginning. That's my problem with Varric.

Funny thing I dont find this ongoing chest hair joke funny either, its a bit overused.

Anyway to answer OP Im more indifferent to him tbh. I never was crazy about him in DA2 and used him only because of Bianca. In DAI im not sure im going to use him much, especially if he got the Anders treatment.

How could anyone not like Varric!?  What is wrong with you people!?

Just kidding.  Initially, like first impression, was he was bit over-the-top...a dwarven Zevran perhaps.  He definitely grew on me.  I appreciated his loyalty (especially given DA2 companion tendencies and storyline.)  I thought his line the lovable dwarf with the gorgeous crossbow and a heart of gold very aptly described his character.  He's the antithesis of all that is dwarven and pretty atypical as a rogue.

I'm happy some people dislike Varric. Because I feel the only reason Varric is likeable for everyone including myself is because he is just funny and everything thing he says make sense in a comical way. Some of his story are well worth of time sometimes... There is no other reason.

Well I'll love the Varric in DAI for sure.

This exactly. Every other character had a moment where they were like "Screw you- I'm outta here.". But Varric just kinda went along with whatever. Side with Anders? Sure. Give Isabella to the Arishok? No problem. Sell Fenris into slavery? Why not? Sure, he might gain some rivalry points or make a sarcastic one-liner, but he just stuck around anyway. It annoyed me. I felt like he had no moral backbone.

Verric is the most handsome dwarf in DA.

At first I used to dislike Varric, but not so much these days.  He's not a favourite of mine, but I certainly don't hate him now.  I think it may have had more to do with DA2 being told through him (and Cassandra).  Never liked that feature.

I know, it sort of sucks handing Fenris over and see Varric do nothing but make a one liner. Actually I hate it when the companions all just go along with something they think is wrong. I mean here is a situation where Hawke is turning in Fenris. Sure Fenris may not be Hawke's friend but he is Varric's and Isabela's and Aveline is a guard captain and cannot permit slavery, and Merrill openly speaks out. The only one who is okay is Anders. Why couldn't the other companions fight to save Fenris. Just render the PC unable to move or let none of the npc attack the pc unless the PC decides to join in and help. If Anders is brought along he just stands there and does nothing during the fight.  It's so dumb to let the companions, who befriended each other just stand there like idiots.

Woa, what does Varric say if you hand Fenris over? I've never been able to do that, but if it's to crack a joke...wow.

Varric sarcastically says "that's our Champion".  He obviously doesn't approve, but yeah, he doesn't do/say anything else to show his objection.

Oh, ok. That's in line with my view of Varric as someone who is passive aggressive and favors comfort/safety over confrontation.

Gross; but not like he's wisecracking at Fenris's pain.

Varric is ok. I found that I liked him less on subsequent DA2 playthroughs compared to my first one- he's just kinda blandly inoffensive. I might take him around in DAI for a while.
