Opening a thread in off topic in deference to Fernando Melo here: http://forum.bioware...men/?p=17622268

As some of you may be aware, Anita Sarkeesian (the face of feminist frequency, a web series of feminist critiques on pop culture like video games) recently went on the Colbert Report to talk about feminist issues in gaming.

During the interview, she specifically singled out BioWare (through Dragon Age) as a 'prominent example of misogyny in the gaming industry'.

Do you feel this claim by Sarkeesian is fair/unfair? Do you think BioWare is problematic when it comes to certain type of content? Do you believe they perpetuate misogyny in the gaming industry? Whether intentional or not. Discuss here.

Please take care to discuss the issue with civility as per Melo's request and don't use this topic to bring up irrelevant side topics. Thank you.

EAware loves Anita. They adore her. Go on twitter, look at their interviews. This woman is their guiding light.

There are many prominent examples of misogyny in gaming. Going through all of them would take longer than just one segment.

I think it might be beneficial in particular to point out Bioware's failings on this issue because they are and probably will listen to the criticisms.

It wouldn't surprise me if certain individuals at this very moment are flogging themselves for drawing the ire of our supreme overlord.

While I doubt this is true, it does bring up a point I want to discuss.

In Anita's videos, she has a very negative view of sexualised women in the media. This view is reiterated by her on twitter and by the writer and producer of her series, Jonathan McIntosh.

It is to the point where I feel they are claiming any sexualisation of women in media is an example of 'male gaze', and by extension, misogyny.

One recent example is their lambasting of Bayonetta 2 where you play as the sexy kick ass.

For those who are no doubt more well versed in feminism than I am, how is she able to reconcile those views with the view that feminism is sex positive because it ties into liberation and empowerment where women shouldn't be shamed for being sexy or sexual.

On this particular issue, her views align more closely to the social conservatives of Fox News.

If Anita started playing games instead of making broad generalizations perhaps she would have a better understanding of what is actually happening in the context of these games.

I think they're overreacting a good deal, but there are pieces from it we can learn. Overdone damsel-in-distress tropes could be changed to something more creative. As far as BioWare-specific stuff, I don't see where she's coming from. If someone wants to target a Game Company on being misogynistic, BioWare would be one of my last picks, if not the last.

Compare the Gaming Industry to its inception and now, I think we've made bigger strides to improve it. Pretty sure Anita herself mentioned that once in the Ms. Male Trope video as well.

S'far as I know, it hasn't hit Lock-On-Sight like some have become - it can depend on the quality of the posts.

I was only joking about going undercover for Fox News. But i agree, She's a conservative, And i personally despise them, But let's just leave her to be. I never really paid much attention to the whole gamer gate and Anita issues until it was brought up on BSN. We really need learn to leave everyone alone with their own views, She can have this ultra feminism crap all she wants. But that doesn't mean i agree with her.

There's plenty of game where you have to save a male character.

Sight this woman. When I played origin . During the city elf origin campaign .. I never though that woman were weakling. Actually during the campagin the mother of the protagonist is  the one who have teached you how to fight ( and the protagonist can be a female and you cousin actually become a very important person for the elf living in that area). The rapist was a madman who took advantage of his position. It could have be done to men. But the reality is that men would not have made a shitstorm out of it.We would have seen it for what it is. A rapist abusing his power.

I think this Anita has an agenda and I don't understand why they give her so much attention. The way they showed it .. Is completetly out of context for people who have no  idea about DA:O. I am getting seriously tired of this Anita bullshit.

it not that she has an opinion.. It that so many give her attention. Especially the media.. Why ? For money ? For view ? I want to understand. Wait no .. I don't want to understand. THing that ****** me off. It that kind of stupidity that make again. The gaming community look bad.

Seriously we should start a movement too and creature our own male Anita version. because there's plenty of nitpicking we can do to make it seem like woman  hate men.

.... What??

I like how Sarkeesian used the rapists from the Alienage Origin as evidence of the game's misogyny and cruelty towards women, even though you and the captured women fight your way out and lay waste to all of the guards, along with the scoundrel noble, only minutes later, and you're celebrated as a hero. Total misogyny. You might as well say Origins is super-misandrist. Lots of male characters die in Origins, so clearly Bioware wants to wage a war on male gamers!

Yup. and who teach the protagonist how to fight ? Your mom. The mother of the Cousland protagonist was also a capable warrior. Of course she will take everything out of context. I'm just tiiiiiiiiiiiired of this. I should just ignore.

I'm inclined to agree. Hitman: Absolution was one she did similarly. During one of the missions, you head around the back of a bar/strip club, and technically have the option to knock them out or drag them.

You know, like every other NPC in the game?

She didn't mention their dialogue before-hand which humanized them a bit more. The examples she's providing for a claim that BioWare is misogynistic aren't very convincing. I would consider myself a feminist to a degree, but I don't share her opinion on this.

Wait! You're a girl?

Lol no. I agree to equal rights for women, but I'm not a laday.

Bioware, misogynistic? I suppose The Pope is a species confused raging flamboyant homosexual gender-confused anti-Catholic Muslim Jewish panromantic atheist too in Anita's delusional world?

Bioware and misogyny don't go together.

EA loves her. I'm not kidding. Big companies want to parade her around like she's a mascot. So ask EA why she's so great. Ask the community moderators here, they have complete adoration for her.

Has this Anita Sarkeesian ever accomplished anything of actual significance or is she another one of those attention craving petty never-do-wells that cannot find a reasonable way to earn money?

I'd hardly call BioWare misogynistic.  They've overused some tropes, sure, but they're one of the few actively trying to work on that.
