I only harden Alistair when I'm going to make him king. I flip flop with Leliana, but I harden her more often than not because I prefer the stronger, less preachy version of her.

The only time I won't harden Alistair is if my male Cousland Warden wants to become Prince Consort.

I hardened both. My Warden is not interested in ruling and convinces Alistair to take the throne. Even if Anora takes care of most of the politics, the un-hardened version of his character is still a little too naive for my liking in such a role. Leliana on the other hand, I simply hardened to be a better fit with my party. Although as it turns out from future events, I think it is perhaps also for the best for her.
