I've seen a change on the forum recently - there are a great many new folk turning up, posting and asking questions - which is great. The Keep and other marketing is finding many new folk and driving them via FAQ links to this forum.

This does mean that for many established BSNers* we need to be open to this influx and not get grumpy if questions that have been debated many, many times are asked again.

So for new visitors

  • welcome - this is a vibrant forum and whilst we do have our disagreements (cough), it's a much nicer place to be than some of the darker corners of the internet. If you ask for help and information (ideally by briefly checking what other threads and sub-forums exist already, and asking there) you will surely get it.

For the old guard

  • The party just got a load bigger, so I think we need to be open and supportive of that. There are going to be a horde of new folk piling in here over the next 6 weeks, so we need to be 'Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!' as the song goes. Next few weeks are going to be mayhem.  Maaaayhem...

Are you new to the forums?

Reading this I felt as if I was in highschool again. In those last years when you saw the new kids coming in. Have fun newscomers, this can be a great place, just be warned, if you enter or make romance threads, or anything about mage vs templars mayhem will sure unfold. Trust me, you are not prepared.

(And yes, there are two references in that paragraph : )

Ha. I feel like an old git now  :D

I guess it's generic advice for any forum - but let's face it, activity is going to spike (and this is not a quiet forum normally...)

Haha, nice.  I wish someone had given me this warning last year when I joined the forums full time.   Especially about the mage v templar stuff.  I was in those threads for a little over six months before burning myself out on the topic.   :P

As long as folks are polite about it, I have no problems answering redundant questions.

Hullo, I'm actually new members since about a few days ago. I had been active only in a few threads and had never properly introduced myself. Nice to meet you all!

I had previously played DA:O and DA2, and currently doing a countdown for DA:I.

I never dived into those threads, I had learnt my lesson with the Quarians vs Geth and Those-That-Must-Not-Be-Mentioned.

For newcomers don't think now it's all negativity, you also get some nice threads in here. The last one to come to mind: http://forum.bioware...3#entry17630102

(or this very thread, but if I link this one I think it'd be a bit trolling...on second thought why didn't I do that?)

Also bienvenido Cerulion :D

BSNers are a passionate, vocal bunch with very strong opinions they don't mind sharing with you.

And there's always the "ignore" feature for the particularly obnoxious.

I thought the new kids were supposed to go through systematic mockery, various hazing rituals and bullying simply because that's what happened when we were the new kids and now is our chance for payback?

There is a rule on many forums - use search(google or forum search) before making a new topic or asking something as there is a good chance that it was already answered. It's a good rule and saves time by not answering a question which was asked millions times, sometimes people are banned and their topics are deleted if they didn't use search before making a new topic.

Before the Network there was the BioWare Forum. It's just a return to its older, rightful name.

There are no cushions in scuttlebutt-town. Only bias, rocks, hard places and cullen fan-threads.

New-newcomers?  Nobody told me people were arriving! I haven't dusted in weeks and there's dirty dishes in the sink and no laundry has been done! WHY WASN'T I WARNED?

In all seriousness, welcome to the new comers.  This place is really quite friendly.

Let's not sugarcoat it.

There are several kind folk on the forums, but the newcomers are more prone to
attract the ones with their heads stuck where the sun doesn't shine. Beware the people
who overindulge in their gamer pride.

I'm not new to Bioware or the DA games, but I'm relatively new to the entire forum scene.
And I will say, there are many more who question the likes/opinions than discuss them civilly.
Warn the newbies! Warn them!

Im pretty new here myself. I like the bsn, though I sometimes think a few of you are waaaaaaaaaaaaay to passionate about certain aspects of this game. That being said my experience here has been mostly positive, so yeah!

Also if you aren't nice to me I'll beat you up.

Not really, Just joshin.

I wish I was greeted with this type of thread when I jumped on BSN back in 2012.  Nice to see that someone is actually taking the initiative to do this for the newcomers this time around.

As for the newcomers themselves, I have this to say:  Beware the Clique.  Trolls do exist on these forums and they're more.... sophisticated than elsewhere on the internet.  imo, the Lobby section is probably the riskiest place to go to since trolls tend to frequent it and mods rarely go there.  I know, I've had my share of run-ins with them.  If you want more info, feel free to contact me through PM.

I thought the new kids were supposed to go through systematic mockery, various hazing rituals and bullying simply because that's what happened when we were the new kids and now is our chance for payback?

I get that you're joking about that, but please don't.  I've dealt with enough of that BS first-hand and I don't really take it lightly.

Anyway, I hope you newcomers to BSN have a great time!

P.S.:  Oh, and you new guys might also want to avoid starting elven-themed threads.  Especially Dalish since there's a group called the Anti-Dalish Brigade (ADB) that loves to hijack those threads.  Don't say I didn't warn you.
