I think what Knights is doing with the BSN member style LP's is a good way to bring the people together. Because nothing brings people together better than poking fun at them.

Especially Sim. But he deserves it and it's his fault that he deserves it :P

Edit: And I just read the thread Knights made in BSN help. If that's successful it'll be another great way to bring people closer... so I can feast on their souls.

activity feed,

reeeeee

It still annoys me to think that they thought this was an adequate response to demands for a proper News Feed.

You'd probably be the only one to think that.  :pinched:

I don't even know what'll happen once I reach 50K. I haven't planned anything and I know I'll get there because I've committed way too much time to this place to bail on it. I'm always going on about making this place better, finding ways to promote positivity here, to decrease the spam and trolling, to increase the discussions and on-the-point posts, to keep people friendly and welcoming, etc etc. I wouldn't be a very good me if I quit and effed off to be somewhere else.

I just wonder if anyone can hear me anymore. You posts words on a screen and hope people will read them and understand, the greatest hope being that they'll listen and consider what it is they're reading and keep it in mind. But lately its like the words we type get lost in the breeze.

Lol, problem is most people don't post purely to make the community a better place. Myself included. I dunno, I suppose on some level I did want to engage the community in a positive light because I started up the Darkest Dungeon Let's Play, but I don't think it's a conscious decision. So when you post stuff like that, maybe people don't respond to it because it just doesn't enter their mindset.

I think ultimately what people look for in the Lobby is a place to kick back and enjoy. To be honest, I don't mind so much the Wild West mentality. I browse a variety of forums, many of which are considered pretty awful by normal standards. So I don't mind rampant shitposting and the like, but there has to be a balance. And I just don't think there is a balance right now.

God, don't get me started on the complaining, the trolling, the flame wars, the off-topic conversations better suited for private messages or an activity feed, etc etc

Then there's the whole clique thing. People partner up into groups and basically post the same exact things everywhere, derailing thread after thread after thread and I get the impression newbies think, "Oh, so this is how it is? Cool" and they pick up the bad habits.

It sucks.

Yeah, had my share of run-ins with the Clique and ADB (Anti-Dalish Brigade).  Always unpleasant.  Even had issues with them outside of BSN (long story, and kind of complicated), which just goes to show how dedicated they are to trolling.   <_<

Still, there should be threads that let newcomers know that the current chaos is not what BSN's supposed to be like.  Maybe, if enough threads start up and actually manage to stay going, the forums will change bit by bit.  Better than not doing anything and watch as the forums are torn apart at the seams.

*shrugs*

I can't even touch on that too much because I never made much use of the BSN's news feed that people often used for their conversations.

It was always a surprise to people if I ever popped in to say something. And you could probably count the amount of times that happened with two hands.

Balance. There you go, nailed it. Balance.

Thats what we don't have, and we damned for sure need it. There's too much BS and not enough of things that are actually good for the place.

The forum is already hanging on threads compared to how it used to be. It went downhill after ME2 began to split the community, DA2 did it in full force, ME3 blew it into the damned stratosphere, and Inquisition hasn't done much for making things better.

Its not gonna take just the games being good to fix the place;Bioware's actively gotta focus on it.

Damn that got melodramatic quick.

The forum's okay, just not the same as it was when Kill la Kill was airing.

True, but it doesn't seem like BW's going to do anything any time soon.  Better we get started on it than wait for something to happen.

I think you nailed it when you said people come to the Lobby in the hopes of finding a place to kick back and enjoy. I, personally, come her to have fun and at times I find different things to be fun. So, I think that maybe what part of the problem is, is the fact that different people find different things to be fun. Some people have fun getting into debates, some like engaging in serious discussions, some like posting for attention, some like trolling, some like to try to be funny and some yo-yo back and forth between doing multiple things because what they find to be fun changes.

Sometimes I find the troll threads to be fun and will give them a look, maybe even comment and at other times I find myself disgusted with them.

I don't think that we'll be able to balance out other's behavior, but maybe we could balance out the threads? Like, try to think of something creative and make a thread out of it? I don't recall seeing a "member introductions" thread, maybe we could do one of those? I think the closest to that was the "behind the monitor thread" which was just pictures of what we look like.

I think that one of the best things that we could do would be to look at other forums and see what is popular/engages with their members and bring those kinds of positive threads over here.

I don't know, just trying to spitball.

Agreed with the coloured knight. BSN had a great community feel to it, it feels diminished now, to an extent anyway.

I've tried making new threads to create some sort of conversation. Only my childhood toy one was one I thought up that I've never seen before. But the others, I just went back to looking at really old threads from years ago here in the off topic section, and saw which ones people actually posted in. So I just remade them. But it seems like most will get derailed in some way no matter what the topic is about.

In my case I think I'm just too painfully optimistic for some people and that doesn't jive with them. :P

Well, it also depends on what the subject is. These days it seems that not counting the powerhouse threads(Anime/Manga, RWBY, MLP, etc etc), the threads that get the most attention are those conducive to either nonsense or chatroom-esque stuff. It got old ages ago.

Its a bit rough to get a successful thread out these days that doesn't fit certain criteria.

Better to be optimistic than a pessimist.   ;)

Me, I'm too cynical to be an optimist.  Not without reason, of course, but sometimes being a cynic is just.... idk, annoying.

I think some level of derailment ought to be expected in most threads, it is the Off-Topic section. But I missed that one actually. Gonna check it out. :)

If the forum had more optimism from its posters it wouldn't be in the state that its in right now.

Yeah it makes sense with certain type of topics. I'm aware that a "How tall are you?" thread can only get so many responses before it tapers off and dies. There need to be threads that spark interest and conversations/discussions that can keep going for a while at least. I just can't think what those topics could be though.

Oh God, thats a big pet peeve of mine; The off topic section is for subjects that don't pertain to Bioware's games, but people get the impression that the off topic section means you're free to be off the subject of a thread.

Its a constant that screws things up around here. Its fine if it happens every now and again, but at this point it happens in nearly every thread. It shouldn't.

We blame sim because he spams the anime thread so much that whatever happens in the thread for better or worse (hint: worse) can unfailingly be traced back to him.

Still, it does get pretty annoying when he's not around for a while and someone else has to be the worst poster. It just isn't the same.

sim, the best worst poster there is. Accept no substitutes.

Well, it also depends on whether the subject matter pertains to the people here.

Ex- The Ori and The Blind Forest thread I made doesn't have a ton of posts in it. The game's about to come out, looks beautiful, sounds amazing, and its coming out for PC and Xbox One, but the game doesn't have the mass appeal that say a Skyrim would have, so it stays quiet.

Another ex- I made a skateboarding thread wondering if anyone here boards or is a fan of watching skateboarding. Not too many flocked to that thread, which I understand.

Here, you kinda just have to roll with it and hope something clicks or will click.

Let me tell you, the Frozen thread was a SLOOOOOOOW build, but eventually it got somewhere.
