Oh God, thats a big pet peeve of mine; The off topic section is for subjects that don't pertain to Bioware's games, but people get the impression that the off topic section means you're free to be off the subject of a thread.

Its a constant that screws things up around here. Its fine if it happens every now and again, but at this point it happens in nearly every thread. It shouldn't.

Hahahah, we'll agree to disagree then. Like I said, I don't mind shitposting I just don't like it when entire threads are ruined because of it. I've done it in the past (a lot) so I'm probably part of the problem rather than the solution, but still I don't mind it as long as it's within reason.

If the forum had more optimism from its posters it wouldn't be in the state that its in right now.

Yeah.  The initial blame does belong to BW and EA, but the majority of the blame is on BSN as a whole.  People don't know how to just think before whining and moaning or spewing flames at one another.

My faith in humanity was already falling down a bottomless pit before I got onto BSN.  The current state of it just sped up the fall.

People, on the whole, are morons.

Yeah, we'll be on opposite sides of the spectrum for this one then. :P

I've seen too many threads get derailed from it to be a supporter of going off the rails.

I've tried making new threads to create some sort of conversation. Only my childhood toy one was one I thought up that I've never seen before. But the others, I just went back to looking at really old threads from years ago here in the off topic section, and saw which ones people actually posted in. So I just remade them. But it seems like most will get derailed in some way no matter what the topic is about.

That's a really great idea, the derailment is unfortunate though.

Sometimes I try to ignore derailment and find a way to talk about whatever I originally posted about when I make threads. Other times I encourage the derailment in my threads if I find them to be more interesting and productive then what my Original Post was about because a community discussion is still happening as I wanted. It's a mixed bag, but the bag sucks most of the time.

In my case I think I'm just painfully optimistic and that doesn't jive with some folks. :P

I remember you saying that your post count bothers people :pinched:

Well, better if we set an example and post the way we know we should. Only way something changes is if you work to make sure it happens.

Yep. Where someone else would get a pass for posting a bunch, I immediately get labeled and judged for it. Sucks.

Honestly, I feel that the Lobby is actually better than the DA:I forums in keeping threads on-topic.  I'm actually avoiding looking at new threads on the DA:I forums due to how bad it is.

imo, the Lobby's much better.  The MP forums are good too, but they're small community-wise.

The off topic section is great when people are on topic and actually talking about the various subjects brought up. But when you see the same things in every thread it just gets tiring and boring.

I started out in the DA:I forums, I don't think I touched the Lobby until two or three months after I joined this site. I have to say, the DA:I forums were a far better and different place before Inquisition came out. Now it's just an abyss of hate; people argue all the time in such a hateful manner, at least here most of us can do it and still be friends and have a good laugh.

I venture over there on rare occasions, just the other day I went over there and saw a special status for a thread it read something like: Being monitored by a moderator or in danger of shutdown, under watch.  I sort of lolled and then shook my head when I thought about how sad it was. At least we can all claim that the Lobby isn't that bad

Well I think theirs a difference between silly posting and being just plain rude imo. But I suppose that is subjective. What I mean is, a lot of the time I see people attempting to trash talk each other in an aggressive way instead of "trash talking" each other in an all-good-and-games way.

Some people just dont really know how to troll so what they post isnt so much funny as it is annoying and unamusing. =\
But I try to ignore it and post irrelevant and relevant crap in my own way. Just to have some fun and relieve some stress.
In all honesty, Id be dead without my sense of humor. I cant imagine processing the shiit we're slogging our way through in life without it. In a 24 hour span, you get an acute sense of how all of this injustice and outrage is absurd. There are things that are truly serious like when one loses their health or gets in a life threatening accident. But the rest of it.. if you cant laugh your way through life, then you sir are fcuked.

Just wish people didnt attempt to mix disrespect and kidding around together.

That's my serious note on this topic.

Now Im gonna go bury myself in the ground and pretend I'm a potato.

Better to be optimistic than a pessimist.

Me, I'm too cynical to be an optimist.  Not without reason, of course, but sometimes being a cynic is just.... idk, annoying.

Well, it also depends on whether the subject matter pertains to the people here.

Ex- The Ori and The Blind Forest thread I made doesn't have a ton of posts in it. The game's about to come out, looks beautiful, sounds amazing, and its coming out for PC and Xbox One, but the game doesn't have the mass appeal that say a Skyrim would have, so it stays quiet.

Another ex- I made a skateboarding thread wondering if anyone here boards or is a fan of watching skateboarding. Not too many flocked to that thread, which I understand.

Here, you kinda just have to roll with it and hope something clicks or will click.

Let me tell you, the Frozen thread was a SLOOOOOOOW build, but eventually it got somewhere.

The things that annoy me are the threads about television shows. It usually turns into just two people who like the show talking about it.

As an example I'll point to the thread for The Blacklist which was mostly just me and Hierophant talking about it with the random comment from some other person at the end.

I started out in the DA:I forums, I don't think I touched the Lobby until two or three months after I joined this site. I have to say, the DA:I forums were a far better and different place before Inquisition came out. I started out in the Dragon Age Origins forums, it took me five years to come down here.

DAI was bad even before release with the people that came in to hate on previous games and optimists.

I don't know. I can't just leave my early schools of thinking. Now I'm a pessimist-realist still with some ideals!

As to the OP, part of the problem is that you kids change your names all the time. How can we tell a true newcomer from some forum regular who just got bored?  The effort of checking name history obviates it when I'm feeling especially lazy (most of the time).   ;)

As for the rest, people come and people go and the constant is change. With the exceptions of a couple of dramatists and jerks, most of the regulars are actually nice people, under the tough gruff exterior.

I tend to have several personalities here. Up in the DAO and DA2 forums, I try hard to be helpful and avoid the interminable discussion threads. At this point everything that needs to be said about Loghain has been said, repeatedly.

I'm not a huge fan of ME (heresy!) so I do not say much there. This go 'round I haven't even bothered to register ME and ME3, just ME2. As for DAI, I haven't finished it. So I don't say anything there. I don't even visit for fear of spoilers. Off Topic is where I play. That informs my posting.

All that being said, if someone identifies as a true newcomer, I try to be helpful.

Lastly, if you do not like the current topics, create one you do like. The odds are it will die on page 2, but persistence is the key here.

Not sure if this is the correct place to say hello, but seeing as I'm new, please don't kill me. :P No stranger to BioWare games (Baldurs Gate anyone?), but have lurked around this place for a few years. Generally avoid forums for many of the reasons listed in this thread - but I said hey, why not join up. I like prattling about Dragon Age and Mass Effect incessantly, and what better place to do it? :) I'm pretty well behaved and good at dealing with trolls, so I should survive. :D

I'm a newcomer! :wizard: I've only lurked in the ME forums though, and I mostly enjoy the posters there.

I think I'm at that stage where I'm still too new to be taken seriously. No one has tried to oppose me... yet. Once they finally realize my potential, it'll be too late.
