NPC is usually saved for "non-playable characters".
Hawke, I'm pretty sure, was playable, because that was the main character.
You were Hawke. Hawke could be customized, thus being an extension of you.
I don't understand how someone couldn't like a character that they made.
But that's me. I can see how some people would wish the DA2 story to be over,
but apparently, the writers decided that it isn't. Maybe Hawke will be more likable
to those that dislike the character.
For all the control and attachment I felt for Hawke (which is to say very little), s/he felt like an annoying sidekick or random party member that quipped or commented in dialogue rather than a character I played. I tried different classes, different personalities, different appearances... nothing made me care or like Hawke enough to do a full complete of DA2 besides my first time.
That's why I refer to Hawke as an NPC. It didn't even feel like a stranger, it felt like a set of disjointed responses, all strung together. Which is maybe what every PC character is when the mechanics are broken down. And maybe Hawke just revealed too many design and execution problems for my own tastes that it felt like they were never a person or character at all.
