I tend to lock my parties in. I don't swap out unless it calls for it in a quest. So this is a list of my 3 characters I will play and their parties. As of now though, the mage slot is slightly up in air as I am not sure the alignments of the three mages. well vivian is obvious but not so much with dorian and solas..

+Rogue Human Inquisitor -neutral play- (roleplayed as if it were me) My alignment tends to be pretty grey so I want characters along that line. These are the ones that I am most likely to pick if I were in that situation. Cass is a lock for sure, as is Varric. Mage was a tough call though between solas and dorian. It may swing back to solas once I play. I just haven't seen enough of either to have a good pulse on them. Early indications are dorian/varric/cass would make for some awesome dialogue.

-Cassandra: (romance) and more of a grey option then blackwall

-Varric: About as grey as you get. I love this character. Feels like he would go to hell and back with you no matter what.

 - Dorian: A pretty good middle ground here. With 2 rogues I am more in need of support/aoe then mage damage.

+Warrior Elven Inquisitor - good play- Roleplayed as a sheltered women that has quite the case of wonderlust. raw to the world so in need of some guidance but still wants to have fun. I really really really hope reaver can be obtained without being evil. That will be a tough one. Champion and Templar atm seem dull, but we shall see. Worst case I go templar since blackwall is a champion.

 - Vivian - guidance and sass. also needed for support with double warriors

 - sera - romance and fun. brings life into the inquisitor and some trouble. Will almost certainly be ranged but who knows. Maybe melee isn't as screwed this time around.

  - Blackwall - about as father figure as you get. Keeps everyone grounded and somber. Maybe he has some humor buried in him

+Qunari Mage - evil - Roleplayed as someone in a F the world state of mind after never being able to find his/her place. Party is full of outcasts and misfits. Someone simply doing what it takes to carve his/her niche in the world.

- cole - probably out of place in a evil play but he is a misfit and misunderstood. frankly I still don't know what the hell he is so even more suiting.

- solas - wants to be left the hell alone to seek power. fits this group well. will have a slight support tint. Could end up being a double force mage party. will have to see.

- iron bull - not quite a misfit, but nothing quite says F the world like a raging qunari warrior lol. He will be my 2h reaver tank.

I'd like to use them all at some point so i'll probably do it in this order:

1) Iron Bull, Dorian, Cole

2) Vivienne, Sera, Cassandra

3) 'the leftovers group' Solas, Blackwall, Varric

Not looking forward to my 3rd play-though all that much

Gonna be switching my party around for each side quest, however for the main story (Because I think they will include the hardest fights) I will have a set party consisting of Cass as the tank, My KE Inquisitor as Ranged DPS who can go Melee, Varric as Ranged DPS, and Solas as Support/CC.

Oh I'll also take companions along depending on what the quest is about, if its more to do with crime stuff I'll take Varric or Sera, if I have to deal with nobility and the like I'll go with Vivi, etc.

I have an algorithm of sorts that I try to stick to:

First, bring everyone who would have a vested interest in coming. So if what I'm doing involves the Fade, bring Solas. If I anticipate darkspawn, bring Blackwall, and so on.

Then bring anyone who would be useful to have along, but who might not volunteer if the Inquisitor didn't ask. So if I'm doing something involving Orlesian nobility, bring Vivienne.

Next, ensure that I have at least one each of tank, melee DPS, and ranged DPS.

Now bring a rogue who can pick locks and break traps if I don't have one already.

If there are still any open spaces, fill them by entering the remaining companions' names into a random thing picker.

Dwarf Warrior will have Varric around for the majority of the game.  The other two will depend on how relevant they are to the current quest at hand.

And after that warrior is over I will have a better understanding of each companion(as of now we know nothing about them) and will better plan out further Inquisitors.  A mage who utilizes Dorian, Solas and Vivienne is something I'm quite interested in.

I searched for this thread and was shocked I didnt find it (or maybe I just didnt look hard enough) but I am curious as to what companion combinations people plan to use. And why. For instance.

I have many party combos in mind for different scenarios. Like when im in a giggly mood I plan to use Dorian, Iron Bull, and Varric. Or not in the mood for silly banter I will use Solas, Viv, and Cole. Quests that are. Mage centric I will use Dorian, Viv and Solas. I also plan to use Cassandra, Viv and Sera when Im feeling like a pimp. Or Cassandra, Varric, and Solas when my Qunari quizzy wants to look racially accepting lol. If there are any quests involving Grey Wardens and specifically Anders, I plan to use Blackwall, Varric, and Cassandra. Mainly cuz B is a warden, Varric knew Anders, and Cass has a working knowledge of him through her interrogation of Varric. These are the ones ive come up with where I didnt take classes into account that much.
The team I plan to use more often than others consists of Blackwall, Dorian, and Sera as these are my fav chars (with what info we have atm) in each class. My preferred team that I will also use more often than not is Cass, Blackwall, and IB because these are my 3 fav followers. But with me playing a warrior, it might be hard to play this. Missing out on chests via lack of a rogue, and lacking a mages firepower and protective abilities and whatnot.

So lets share, or direct me to the original topic if it already exists. Which if thats the case then My bad.

right now i am planning on bringing varric and cassandra with me everywhere cause i liked the banter between them in dragonage 2, i'm probably also going to bring dorian, since i like him most out of the mages from what i have seen. i'll have to play the game before i can really decide.

Since I am not sure what my Inquisitor will be class wise I have only narrowed down my party to two;

Varric and Dorian

I plan to have Solas in my party at least 90% of the time. That man's voice is so swooning I want to hear it as much as possible  :P also because he has a lot of info about the Fade. I will probably replace him with Dorian every now and then though or have both at the same time since I'll be playing as a rogue.

Haven't thought much about full combinations, it will depend on the missions but I'll definitely want Sera and Bull to be in the same party, I'm all about fun party banters. Also Cass and Varric, give me all the bickering!

I'll end up choosing all of them at some point. The ones I will leave behind the most will probably be Vivienne, Cole and Blackwall. Not that I don't like them, but just because I prefer the others for the mage, rogue and warrior spot.

I will try them all out at some point, but I tend to pick a party and stick to them for the majority of a playthrough.  The only exceptions are companion quests where someone needs to come out or if there is a particularly interesting mission that I'd like a character to join for.

This could change after I actually get to spend more time with them, but my first playthrough will have:

I always play sword and shield warrior first

Cassandra (switched to two-handed warrior) (planned first romance, unless Josephine really dazzles me; I haven't seen much of either, so it should be interesting)

Varric

Vivienne

Second playthrough

Likely a female mage

Sera (romance)

Iron Bull (think of the mayhem; I rofl'd with that banter line; I hope he's consistently that great)

Dorian

Third playthrough

Rogue, still not sure on daggers or bow though, probably male to romance the other LI I missed earlier

Blackwall

Cole

Solas

And any subsequent playthrough will most likely be my favorites :).  Although, I really can't guarantee I'll follow this.  Someone might really jump out at me early on to mix things up.

Ideally, I would like to switch around and try different combinations. But I know how I am and I will more than likely play the majority of the game with one team and they'll end up being the ones I'm most comfortable with. For my "canon" female Qunari mage playthrough I'm thinking my priorities in regards to teams will be as follows:

1. Dorian, Iron Bull, and Sera

2. Cassandra, Vivienne, and Varric

3. Cole, Solas, and Blackwall

A.K.A.

1. The team I use for most major missions and side quests

2. The team I use for a few side quests and also probably early game

3. The team I use like once or twice, maybe.

My number 1 go to team will be this:

Dorian - my boyfriend

Cass/Bull - my two best friends out of the group

Varric - putting him as a dagger rogue

My main group:

Dwarven warrior Inquisitor

Varric - Obviously need my dwarven buddy

Solas- I think he sounds the most interesting out of the mages

Cole/Sera - Will probably swap between these two for 4th slot

Then I'll just swap in people if I think they will be relevant to the current mission.

I'll travel with each of them in various combinations because I love the banter, but the actual companions I look forward to the most are Blackwall (can't wait to try out S&S DPSer), Solas (rift mage!), and Cole (I want to see how he's changed since Asunder.)  I'm optimistic about Iron Bull (sense of humor and crazy maul work), Dorian (from Tevinter - oooooh), and Sera (love the personality.)  I've already met Cassandra and Varric, so no rush there, and Vivienne leaves me a little concerned.  All this will probably change November 19.

For me it depends on the story. I like to roleplay my PC with a particular character and then follow that character with my in game choices. For the first playthrough I will play a warrior who is fair but rather unforgiving and harsh. So what has to be done is done and anyone who gets out of line will have to be dealt with. I imagine this will lose me some followers.

I'd like to try all of them but I think Varric and Dorrian with pretty much be a constant with either Blackwall or Cass as Tank

I going for at least two mages, me and someone else, one warrior and one rogue. Failing that two rogues, a warrior and me. As for specific companions, it'll be largely circumstantial,  it will depend on the mission/quest. Dealing with Wardens? Bring Blackwall. Dealing with Chantry? Bring Cassandra. Dealing with Orlesians? Bring Vivienne.

Cassandra, Blackwall, Vivienne, Cole, Varric, Sera, Iron Bull, Solas, and Dorian.  Yep, that's right, all of them...whether I especially like them or not.

My 1st play-through will be as a mage so I'll do a classic setup and am leaning toward Sera (long-range sniper,) Cassandra (defender/tank,) and Blackwall (damager).  I reserve the right to change my mind once I'm in game however.  One of my subsequent play-throughs I will take the 3 companions with the most clashing personalities.

For my first PT, my main party members will be Solas and Cole, and I'll rotate the 3 warriors for the tank slot.

I'm going to use them all during my first playtrough.

Cassandra, Varric/Sera and Vivienne for Mages, Templars and Orlais related quest.

Varric/Sera, Dorian and Iron Bull when I'll be working with criminals (or fighting them).

Dorian, Cassandra and Iron Bull for Tevinter-related quests.

Cole/Varric, Solas and Blackwall for Deep Roads.

Cole, Solas/Dorian and Iron Bull when dealing with demons and curses in side-quests.

As for my "main party", it will be probably Rogue/Dual-wielding/Tempest Inquisitor, Iron Bull, Dorian and Varric.

I tend to have a main party depending on the playthrough, though I'll switch companions around occasionally.

1. Cassandra/Cole/Solas - Elven Mage.

2. Iron Bull/Dorian/Sera - Dwarf Rogue.

3. Blackwall/Vivienne/Varric - Qunari Mage.

I have a set party for all my playthrough and really only switch up for story related stuff.

1st Set - Human Male Mage
- Dorian (LI)
- Cassandra
- Cole

2nd Set - Dalish Male Mage
- Iron Bull (LI)
- Varric
- Solas

3rd Set - Female Human Mage
- Cullen (LI)
- Vivienne
- Blackwall
- Sera

4th Set - Female Dalish Mage
- Solas (LI)
- Dorian
- Vivienne

Really wanna see if I can get by with an all Mage party one gameplay on Hard. XD

I'm currently planning to use Iron Bull, Dorian, and Cole the most; team swag + blonde emo guy. (My main Inquisitor that will be with this group is a mage/necromancer).

At first glance, I really like the personalities of all 3, and, I like the designs of all 3 as well. I'm sure they will have an interesting tale or 2 to tell as well, which makes me like them even more. A exiled Imperium citizen, a leader of a merc band, who, is a part of a very different culture, and a spirit from the fade with a child-like mind, who, is seemingly forced to help those in need no matter what/how.

As I understand it, different option will be available if you take different characters, so I'm going to try that out.

If there is no need, I'll probably take Solas (I like his design and attitude), Cassandra (because she's got a straightforwardly violent approach I can respect), Varric (because he's my bro)

I might take Blackwall (I just don't know that much about him) or Sera (I want her to be funny), or Vivienne (her personality and attitude I like, but from the stuff released, she grates me)

I don't really want Cole, Iron Bull, or Dorian
