I don't get why people are so against this. You know you can just mute the TV or lower the volume?

It's a pain in the ass to always reach over for the mute button.

Gilbert Gottfried should voice it.

I think they commented on this before, saying it was a waste of time

I imagine that this would be very expensive for them to do.

is it too hard for some people to read? i don't like the idea

Not to hard just annoying, to pause everytime to read it if it was narrated in the background while you continue playing it would work fine cause you can listen to it to learn of the lore while playing =)

Just toggle it on or off in the main menu problem solved :P

I would like the option to have a narrator, but I read faster than the narrator speaks. Better to use the money on something else.

No thanks to this.  It suited the ME universe because it's the future and everything is voiced (apparently) which meant I could just about tolerate it (even if I did have to mute the volume most of the time) but it doesn't suit the DA universe at all.  It makes sense for Shepard to listen to the entries, but my Inquisitor would think 'demons!  KILL!' if the book she picked up suddenly started talking.

Though the Narration is meant solely for you, not for the PC. It is used to make the game both more immersive and to get a greater change of pace cause some me included would not like to just stop their gameflow to read something. Though all people like different things in the end, some like it some do not.

Besides as those with dyslexia or other problems with reading could really be benefit from it (to a degree)

And don´t get me wrong I like reading but I do not want my gameflow to change cause I have to stop and read something.

Yeah, having the codex being read over the party banter or NPC conversations sounds like a great idea.

Not if it's gonna be anything resembling that obnoxious voice from the Mass Effect codex. It was distracting and annoying and it made me wish I was deaf.

And if they cannot resist the urge to add an annoying voice which sounds like a retarded speak from a tv commercial, I hope we at least get the choice to make it shut up.

That would be my main concern too, if the codex were to be read out loud, upon discovery, while exploring, depending on it's length it's probably going to overlap or cancel out party banters, ambient sounds etc. I wouldn't want that in my game, sorry OP.

I thought they found the perfect balance between voiced and text in DA:O DA:2. You get the voiced stuff for the really important stuff (at each chapter change Varric narrates what happened) and the codices are read. This principle has been pretty standard even since the Baldur's Gate days. As many people mentioned before I think we all read much faster than the narrator reads, and the ressources poured into this would probably help better with other mechanics.

There are hundreds of codices and you would just transform reading time into listening time (which takes more time this time around).

I have to admit though that having morgan freeman read my adventures would be quite soothing

I always assumed that the voiced entries were voiced 'in universe' (part of a broadcast on a subject, like the way the DA entries are part of books and letters and things).  Having a voice entry in ME doesn't break immersion because it suit the universe.  Having a voice entry in DA would break immersion (at least, it would for me). I don't find it breaks up the gameflow because it makes sense to stop and pick something up while investigating.

I just wish the DA entries would improve their type font and size.  They'd be far more enjoyable to read if they did.

I remember listening to the codex entries in Mass Effect 2 and then going through them in DA:O and I couldn't be bothered to read them.

Well to stop and pick something up is not breaking the flow since it is part of the fun to find them, but it is just that to stop and read it that bothers me. I just never read them. And by font and size you talk about the text size right just to confirm? Casue that would be good as well.

(sorry swedish one here no native english speaker)

This discussion is getting fun :P

If there were an option to disable the voice, I would have no objection to the feature.

But I do object to the cost.

Sounds like a massive waste of budget. Also, due to the heightened cost this would be likely to decrease the number of codices they include.

As many others have pointed out this would probably be resources spent more wisely on other things and most people does read faster than the narrator would speak. However I would love to have it anyway, but not at the cost of the amount of codex entries or the overall quality of the game. It should also be optional.

No.I liked them in Mass Effect but budget wise I don't mind reading them.I don't even read them most of the time any way.I treat them like email..........."Mark all read" now back to fighting that Ogre.

From what we've seen, whenever a Codex is open the game itself pauses until you close the Codex.

I always thought it was an opportunity missed not having companions occasionally read and comment on the lore notes/books/letters picked up in game (although occasionally they do, it is quite rare). But having someone like Sera get excited and race forward and read the note out loud making side-comments rather than you would likely be quite entertaining. Although it would probably make the most sense to do this in the early game and during loyalty quests where the developer would have some idea of what companions you are taking of course.

However, that is not really what you were asking so I will get back on topic. Like most others, I would like a toggle because if I am going to read it then it will just annoy me reading over someone else's voice. Therefore, I doubt it is worth the cost to include but it wouldn't really bother me if it was. Would still only read the ones I was interested in.

The thing about you companions reacting to the codexes was interesting. It would be cool if they did that. It could offer some very interesting and uniqe companion talk.

And the thing about the narration is that you wont read it yourself, cause reading it when someones talking is annoying I agree, but that was not the point I wanted to make, the point was that you do not have to read it yourself the narrator reads it for you in the background (though reading it youself as well is optional to you)

Am I the only one who's super lazy to read codexes? haha But I wouldn't want them to spend time and money with a narrator. If I want to read them, I'll read them myself. Besides, the idea of having a voice talking while you're playing doesn't seem right to me. You will lose party banters and it would be super distracting. So, nope.

Although I do agree that it would be nice for companions to comment on the stuff you pick up in the game. And I do believe that happens to some degree. There's one gameplay video where the Inquisitor picks something up and Dorian goes "what in andraste's name is that? Hold onto it! I want to look at it later." It's better than nothing, and it made me chuckle so hopefully they will comment more on stuff.
