optional Content is a bogus argument for WHY a company should add something.
First it can be said for almost EVERYthing. The arguments for it are all the same it gives choice it [blah blah blah]. It it just NOT relevant. A milltion differnt hair syles gives choice but it doesn't make the game better. Its a bloody waste as all the time and money could have been focused on other aspects of the game. Just because its gives players a choice ISNT a valid reason. Player choice is a mantra but its widely ignored as a reason to do something. Granted adding content has the added effect of increasing choice but choice isn't a valid reason in and of itself.
The actual content itself needs to stand on its own. How does this content further the gaming experience? If it is missing does it negatively impact the gaming experience for this title? Is this content relivent to the gaming enviorment? Does it further the story? Marriage really doesn't stand up to these questions.
Then you have practical questions...
How many man-hours does this take to make? Would we be better to use the budget on different options? how technically difficult is it to add? How many departments are required to add this option? Will this add to much to an already stretch department? Is it worth adding the option purely from the amount of effort vs the potential gain?
If all you can say of a WANT is It adds choice then it falls into the same level of validy of "I want the story to be about a Jedi that crash lands on Thedas!"
People have tried to claim this want is about being inclusive but that rings hollow given just how forward thinking they are with regards to romances. People have tried to claim its unfair to people who have values that don't sync with premarital sex, thats a weak argument because games can not cater to every person's own morality. And you can CHOOSE not to partake in the content. Bioware wants their games to be inclusive and representative but that doesn't mean the only way they are inclusive or representative is if they include every point of view. BioWare's games are representative of the Valuse of Canadians why is that relevant? Oh I don't know maybe because Bioware Edmonton is where DA:I is made and that is in Canada. So maybe a company should hold the values of the country its in?
