I know my first character is Dwarf Warrior.  And I've already created his world state on the keep.  Other than that though, nothing.

A Question: Not mocking but...

Why do people invent like really big backstorys for characters, it isnt like your platform delves into your head to pick it out and make it count in the story , so why do you do it?

Also whats all this 'Chaotic good stuff' are they archtypes?

I am a roleplayer, I like getting into the head of my character. My reason for doing it is two fold.

1.) I find it fun. Simple enough reason, I find roleplaying my characters to be fun and enjoyable so I do that.

2.) It makes deciding things IG so much more easier. While I don't know what choices will be available, I do know which one my character will choose. I don't have to look up on the web, ooh do x to get y result. I just choose the option which my character would choose.

As for alignments, that is a dnd thing.

As for my first Inquistor, Navilia Trevelyan, has a pretty good and detailed background; rather extensive a bit. Though to do a short explaination of whom Navilia is.

Navilia Trevelyan, 23, rogue/archer, bisexual(will romance either cullen or josephine)

Navilia is the youngest daughter of the Trevelyan family. While she always knew she would join the chantry at some point. For most of her youth she was a wild girl, prefering to just enjoy the life of luxury that she was born into. She often found it fun to sneak away from the castle, or into her brothers' rooms to play pranks on them. Often at her side throughout all of this was her handmaiden, Siobhan; whom was also her first love.

That is until they found themselves at the mercy of a blood mage, while Navilia got away and hid safetly, Siobhan was killed by the blood mage in some ritual. Navilia will never forget being so helpless to save her best friend, and the look of sheer terror on her friend's face. Conidering that they were just teenagers, and Siobhan was her first love, this devestated the young Navilia. She was saved from almost sucidal depresion by Mother Roysa, a mother within the chantry. She helped Navilia get over her trauma and depression.

It was then she decided that now was the time to prepare to enter the chantry. She knew as well, that she would never become the Teryna of Ostwick. But as the head of the Ostwick Chantry, or even grand cleric, she could do far more to help both her family and other people.

She is decidely pro-chantry, she wishes to help end this war, because it is damaging the faith and leading to further suffering. She supports the circle and the templars, though only if they are under the oversight of the Chantry. She went to the peace confrence to help support her family and the Chantry's interest in ending the war.

Thus the story begins  :)

All I know is that my first PC will be a female human pro mage rogue or mage who romances Cullen.

I've planned the basics, but I can't really know specific details until I play the game. I know an approximate of what my first character will look like, who they'll romance, and what they'll act like (human female mage, Blackwall LI, nice personality).

Not too much really. I just know that my first Inquisitor is going to be a lady elf and will romance either Solas or Cullen. After watching the CC demos, I'm more confident about being able to closely recreate a facial model I've been looking at (Nadja Giramata). Other than that, I think I'm going to just make it up as I go.

I've planned excessively, to the point I have an idea in my head of an Inquisitor for each race/class/gender/LI (so 8), with their appearance, personality, morals etc. It will probably change for each as I play, but I love pre-planning. Strangely satisfying, and keeps the hype burning while I wait for DAI.

It helps to get into your character's mind and motivations. For instance, if you headcanon that they have survivor's guilt due to X happening in their past, you'd be likely to pick the option to express grief/frustration etc at losing people in the Inquisition. Possibly blame yourself. It helps make them feel more like a person too. Basically the same reason Shepard has three backgrounds to choose from in ME, despite them impacting next to nothing in the game.

I have not plotted my course other than a few basic things -- I don't want to set myself up for disappointment by writing a 40 page backstory that is not reflected in (or worse, is contradicted by) the game, preselecting a romance or specialization that isn't what I'd like it to be... etc.

My plan is to play a human male mage that tends toward diplomacy. Outside of that, I want to try to enjoy the game for what it is.

It's always hard for me not to make a backstory for my character even pre-launch so I usually end up doing so regardless and disregard (or alter it) if it does not match the game.

I do consider how I want my characters to look so I don't spend an eternity in the character creation screen. I usually keep their personality light because I find very often that their intended personality changes when I play them in-game. I have two with "pre-planned" romances, though if I find a romance I feel match the character I'm playing better I'll go with that romance instead.

The only thing I know for sure is for the first time I'll be playing a character that is me. I'll make all choices based on my belief's, and morals. Suffice to say just about everyone in game will be pissed at the Inquisitor.

a snarky female dwarf dagger weilding tempest rogue

*Romance, either Cullen or Iron Bull  :wub:

* Specialization: Tempest

* Brit voice

* snark/good

* Pro Elves

* Pro Mage

* Pro Chantry (I hope to be the voice of reason.....)

It'll be interesting to RP. Someone who cannot use magic after all. While she's all for freedom, she hopes that a new peace talk can be made without having to choose faction over the other. Both have their severe pros & cons

My 1st playthrough will be as a male Human Warrior, though I don't know which voice to use, romancing Cassandra. Don't know what I'll name him

For my 2nd playthrough, I will be a female Qunari mage, though I'm a bit conflicted between Alix Wilton Regan and Sumalee Montano's voices (the latter who follows me on Twitter), romancing Sera. Not sure on what to name her either.

Then, 3rd time around, male Elf, rogue, but haven't planned that much far ahead

I have 9 characters in various stages of completition. All races/genders/classes are finalised. Only have about 3 or 4 specializations to decide on, and about the same for romances. As for in-depth stuff, like personality and team layout, only have a couple of those sorted.

I have eight characters intensely planned out. Generally I'm a completionist, but I find the reaver specialization to be revolting. Hated it in DAO, hate it now. Legit the only thing that could motivate me to create a 9th PC is if there's an achievement for playing as a reaver.

Otherwise, every class, race, gender and romance is covered. Also looked at voicing (decided British for my four humans, American for Dwarf and Qunari and still on the fence for my elves) and party composition and am just getting a general idea of physical characteristics.

But yeah, so I have origin bios for all eight written up and still trying to work out some minor kinks in personalities. So far the four Trevelyans are the most well done, because they add something to each other's bios, but my elf mage, dwarf rogue and qunari mage are fairly decent as well... My elf rogue seems so bland right now, so still trying to work out something interesting in his background.

I did decide to break with BioWare's description of the Trevelyan non-mage in order to make 4 of my potential quizzies related (rather than dealing with several multiverses at once like I had to with Hawke), so I'm hoping that they don't restrict the characterization of the inquisitor to dogmatically follow the whole "youngest child of the Trevelyan family" bit. Anyways, that decision allowed for a lot more character building and motivation, so currently it works for me.

I've also been doing some intensive world building on the side. Like I worked out a pedigree for the Trevelyan family going back six generations or so and including some interesting intermarriages with Free Marches families, Orlesian families and even a Cousland one time; it's about 52 people in total, though I didn't include children from marriages outside the family. I also made the questionable decision to make the Amell warden's father a Trevelyan, though he's literally the least relevant person in the family, ie totally married Revka for her family's money, and Aristide told her to marry him to link the respectability of the (very pious, very pro-chantry) Trevelyan family to the (chock full of mages) Amell family. Anyways, this was done more to add tension to my Warden's backstory, not for Quizzy to be like "Oh, no big deal, but the Hero of Ferelden is my third cousin (or third cousin once removed)..." Because other than the mage Trevelyan, they honestly don't care. Because mage. So this decision resulted in my creating a 4 generation pedigree for the Amells, though it's not nearly so interesting as nearly every character is canon.

I also embarked on the strange project of creating a massive protagonist timeline chart that includes any major events in any of my PCs lives; and I do mean any PC... I grabbed all seven of my Wardens, my three Orlesian Wardens (though only one of which ever became Warden Commander of Ferelden, the other two existed purely for role playing reasons), Hawke and the eight inquisitors. This was largely just to keep me organized while coming up with the bios and prevent recycling of anything I used previously.

Haven't planned too much yet.

I am Tevinter through and through. So I am bound to be disappointed no matter what. The likelihood of us being able to side or cooperate with Tevinter agents, forces or diplomats of any kind are slim to none. TBH at this point my expectations are so low that only ONE conversation with a Tevinter would mean everything.

Spoiler

I'm gonna make a male dwarf rogue named Sebastian. He's gonna have short brown hair, green eyes, facial scars, American accent, and a gnarly beard. I'll probably roll with Cassandra, Dorian(LI), and Varric. I've also theory crafted all the builds for my character and companions.

JUST GIVE ME THE GAME, I"M READY TO GO!

Right now, I have eight characters across all three classes growing in my mind. I should start with Sienna or Alec (I've never completed either the first or second game as a warrior) but playing as a mage just fits me too well.

Dwarf Rogue: Brolygoun

Dwarf Warrior: Sienna

Elf Mage: Erisaire

Elf Rogue : Ariel

Human Mage: Selene

Human Warrior: Alec

Qunari Mage: Nyah

Qunari Rogue: Kaia

well in DA:O I played a male Dalish Archer, in DA2 I played a male Hawke Mage, so in DA:I my plan is to make a male Dalish 2h warrior at first, he will be highly diplomatic and anti-blood magic, so probably gain skill later on as a templar to hunt down daemon filth.

I've done a ton of planning in other games, making facsimiles of DA characters.

It backfired when a song and dance number about blood magic broke out on Tomodachi Life.

I've got everything planned out:

Name: Brann Trevelyan

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Class: Two handed warrior

Specialization: Templar

Personality: Diplomatic, and honorable

Romance: None. Brann isn't very interested in Josephine or Cassandra. Brann is also a noble from a powerful family and is staying single for the off chance of finding a potentially beneficial marriage.

Mage Templar War: Brann is Pro Templar but kind and sympathetic towards the mages. After the rebellion is crushed Brann will be merciful on the surviving mages. Brann hopes to reform the Circle of Magi afterwards and make it less strict and terrible.

Main Party Members: Blackwall, Sera, and Dorian

Combat Tactics: Blackwall will tank and agro the biggest elite. Brann will focus on enemy spellcasters and provide melee dps.  Sera will focus on enemy archers and provide ranged dps. Dorian will provide a variety of support magic and, since he's most likely a Necromancer, will summon friendly spirits to fight on the battlefield for us.

As always I will start off my first game as a human rogue. A little witty and a bit diplomatic s/he will pursue Josephine in a relationship. Of course however, I will probably be sticking with the English voice actors the duration of my run throughs (Not an anglophile, I'm just a little unsure of the American/Puerto Rican VA's). As for the gender that remains to be seen; it'll probably depend upon who gets the better lines/delivery.

As for backstory that will be a little more difficult to draw up since it was written for you and it can be summed into one sentence. You being the offspring from a specific noble family that always had close ties to the chantry; you were sent there at an early age to learn the chant of light and of the Maker's other blessings until the Mage v Templar war broke out, thus forcing you into the world. Essentially you are Sebastian from DA2 with that backstory minus the death of your entire family. However, that's just the human end of it.

Name: Mason, may depend if the VA is any good (I do not want to sit through a repeat of Anora's speech), it's a little unoriginal but it's a lot of letters from my name scrambled together.

A ton. Been thinkin' 'bout it a lot. To human or to elf, to rogue or to mage. Lot to still get goin' for me.

Probably human mage first. I usually play as an elf rogue first in fantasy rpgs... but I got a special reason for human mage first.
