I always prefer to play as a 2H Warrior. The player was the Hero of Ferelden and Hawke and now is the "Inquisitor" (read: badass). So I roleplay as offense and "bringing the pain." Cassandra will be the party protector. I can't see the mighty Inquisitor as a sword and board type warrior. But, that's my humble preference.

As someone else mentioned above, play with what you like/prefer. Nothing worse than grinding through the game, playing with a choice you dislike (of course you can respec). I think it's cool that we can change the other warrior party members from sword/shield to 2H and vice versa. You couldn't do that in previous DA games (not without mods?).

DAO didn't restrict the ability trees.  While Alistair came with S&S talents, you could give him 2H skills when leveling him up after recruitment.

DA2 did restrict the trees (Carver couldn't access the S&S tree at all, as an example), unless you put in a mod. I used that mod for every Hawke after the first one, because the restriction was annoying.  In particular, not letting Merrill have access to the Creation tree (when I wanted to take her instead of Anders as a healer) got on my nerves.

I don't like the look and style of the sword and shield but I don't want to be a tank. I want to be the 'balanced warrior' being able to take damage but also be able to dish it out.

I don't care if Cassandra is already a sword and shield, me and my love will double team with the sword and board.

Awesome!! Thanks for all the help. I've still not completely decided but it gives me more info to make my decision. I might go with Male qunari two-handed first. Then go with Female human S&S after my rogue playthrough.

I agree with what some people are saying about the looks of the character, it would be nice to see a screen shot of a male qunari with a S&S vs Two-handed from the front back.

Thanks again for all the help.

Maybe it would help to consider other two handed weapons. There are going to be some pretty sweet two handed hammers (Avar Barbarian's hammer from demo).

Check this link out for some sweet two handed action. (Two handed hammer from Troy)

And no matter what you use, you'll still fall under the superior war machine that is the Qunari!

I'd be more inclined to believe you if Tevinter managed to retake Seheron and keep it.  As it stands, Tevinter is getting its ass handed to it by the Qunari.  Just saying.

I will attempt to be somewhat realistic.

For example, my Elven warrior Inquisitors are in no way going to be two-handed, especially the female ones. Have you seen how skinny and spindly elven arms are ? To imagine them using a two handed sword like Iron Bull does is just weird.

As for your warrior follower, both Blackwall and Cassandra will be sword & shield since they are both the defender and protector types while the Bull, being Bull, will be a two handed badass mofo.

One of my elven Wardens was a 2-hander warrior and he was a total badass, pretty much roflpwning everything in his way.  Going to make another one that's a dual-wield warrior.  But then, to each his own, right?

No, you can't change your class mid-game.  What they mean by respeccing is that you can reapply your ability points to change your build if you feel the need to.  You could do it in Awakening and in DA2, makes sense for BW to include it in DA:I.

I'll probably pic either Champion or Templar as I've never liked the reaver specialization.

If you want to vanquish evil in style, go sword and shield.

A Qunari with a sheild just feels wrong. He needs to have a bloody huge two handed axe.

I am also going warrior for my first playthrough and I will go two handed.

Not really. The Stens in DA2 used sword and shields. Iron Bull himself train with a shield against Krem in a custscene.

I completed two playthough, first time 2hander, and I struggled to stay alive, second time I was champion sword and shields, and I was unkillable while delivering pretty much the same amount of DPS.

I tend to like playing more aggressively, so I will be making a 2H in my next play through when I get around to a warrior. I've tried my hand at tanking in several different iterations of game, and while I'm competent at it, I just don't like it. It's dull. Taking damage like a champ is only cool when you can really dish it, too, and then it gets overpowered way too quickly. So I prefer to walk the other edge - dish it while you have trouble taking it.

I've always had trouble keeping 2 handers alive in DA, especially reavers/berserkers. Don't know why, it's clearly not a universal problem. In any case, I respecced Iron Bull to a sword and shield and he's getting out a lot more now.

My qunari was a 2 handed, felt right fits with either Cass or Blackwall as S&S. It did mean that I rarely took IB with me though.

Make 2h Champion warrior and you'll get a good well-rounded character capable of both dishing out damage and tanking all by himself even on nightmare, while also having some decent cc capabilities. This approach also offers great flexibility it terms of what companions you can take with you. The downside is rather steep however, because you can only use Champion focus ability with a shield equipped.

The correct answer is DPS sword and shield Reaver. That's my personal favorite warrior build, anyway.

Any tips on keeping reavers alive? I fail at that
