Why do you think the Templars turned to red Lyrium?

@Lexx personally I think they nicked pieces off of Meredith statue or that red lyrium grows or corrupts things around it to replicate itself.

So Bioware has an excuse for Pro Templar PC to still fight Templars.
Even without red lyrium templars they still can't decide what side they should be on. So many internal affairs within the organization.

Do you think because they take lyrium that it makes it easier for the red lyrium to "sing" to them?

Well, you turn into more red lyrium if you use it too long/die while using it right?
I'd think that putting it inside you would speed that up (templars drink lyrium potions right?), and hey, every new templar that dies from it becomes more lyrium for everyone else. They don't even have to go looking for more! Renewable resources!
So it probably began when some templar broke off a piece of Meredith. And then eventually ran out of regular lyrium, meanwhile the red was singing all "Heeeey, I'm lyrium... I can totally take care of that withdrawal for you. Cmon, you know you wanna try me." and so s/he did try it, and it was awesome. It worked even better than regular lyrium.
And so s/he told all her/his templar friends, who had also conveniently broken off a piece of Meredith to remember her by, and they all started doing red too.
Aaand by the time people started turning into lyrium, everyone was even more addicted to the red stuff than they were to regular lyrium.
But that's okay, because unlike the blue stuff, they will never run out of red. And they don't have to pay a single copper to get it.

Is red lyrium Obviously a corrupting influence?
We as the player can see this clearly but is it as obvious to viewers within the game?
Red lyrium doesn't seem to make you something you are not already. Meredith doesn't become greedy to the extreme of trying to murder people for monetary gain. Bartrand however does become thus but he's already shown to be greedy. Meredith is paranoid and reactionary to the point of killing innocent mages but she is also RIGHT about there being the corruption of blood magic in the circle. I mean the first enchanter was a blood mage!
So you are a templar who hears about the events in Kirkwall, are you going to actually get the perspective that its an Obviously corrupting influence? You will hear how powerful it made Meredith and but will you be able to connect the dots from Bartrand to Meredith to corruption? Especially when factually Meredith was right? We tend to think you are only paranoid if you are wrong about your fear. You can be paranoid and they could also be out to get you.

Power is corrupting. Red Lyrium and Blood magic are corrupting. Red Lyrium is even more corrupting it sings and the current absolute end is madness. Blood magic is dangerous but is unstable the result can be effective or you can get possessed. Both are very volatile red lyrium moreso.

It is a great sorce of Omega 3 and has half the callories of regular Lyrium.
9 out of 10 mages surveyed couldnt tell the difference from being beeten to death from a red templar or a regular one.

Their wells of blue Lyrium were running out thanks to their shortsighted rebellion, unfortunate desperation for the line of duty.
Hopefully there is redemption for them.

it's like lyrium is the material form of spirits. regular lyrium seems to have the same nature as regular spirits, bad things may come of it but it is not the intention. red lyrium seems to be the material form of demons corrupted, powerful, and influential
I love this theory. I totally think you're right. I also think that the sudden abundance of all this red lyrium is directly connected to the fade rifts. With the Veil tearing open all over the place, the influence of the Fade is affecting the physical world. If one applies this theory, some of the regular lyrium might be turning into red lyrium the same way a spirit can become a demon. It also might simply be growing because of all the new magical energy flowing from the Fade. It could also all be originating from that one thaig and other areas connected to it. There might even be other ancient abandoned thaigs containing it.
As for how the Templars are getting it? Smugglers. There were already people smuggling regular lyrium. Why wouldn't they start smuggling this stuff? It's new and more powerful than regular lyrium. There wouldn't have been any way for the majority of Templars to initially be aware of how the lyrium would corrupt them. One of their suppliers comes up to them saying they've got this new red lyrium that's far more powerful than what they've been using. Desiring more power to put down the mage rebellion, they don't even hesitate. It isn't until later that they realize what it does, if they're even sane enough to think straight at that point. By then it would already be too late. They'd be hooked and cray-cray to the max. Who knows, the stuff is more powerful than regular lyrium so perhaps it's even more addictive as well?
I'd also like to point out something particularly disturbing. Within Dragon Age there is mention of lyrium red and otherwise "singing" to people just as the archdemon supposedly "sings" to the darkspawn. I hate to say it, but there seems to be a connection between magic, the fade, lyrium, and the taint. Can't seem to piece it all together though. I mean, what exactly is the taint anyway?
All we really know is it came from the Fade and that it's where darkspawn come from. Maybe magic is bad... ![]()

Oh dear, the junkies went from blue to red!! Getting higher faster and with more power returns maybe. Very much the right sort to safegard the population at large from those pesky mages.

Considering red lyrium is incredibly rare, I doubt it's easier to come by than normal lyrium. As far as why the Templars have turned towards it? Desperation? More potent effects providing better results? It matters not. The Templar Order has lost their way and all will receive judgment by the Inquisition. They will repent for their sins and feel the full force of justice. None shall be spared.

Sounds very possible and would explain the Red templars becoming corrupted and monstrous looking after extended use, unlike normal lyrium.

Well, considering the fact, that Templars rebelled against the Chantry (which controls the lyrium trade), would leave a lot of them with no anti-mage power and lyrium withdraval syndrome. It was why their rebellion was stupid. Chantry knew what it was doing by addicting Templars to lyrium and taking control of the market.
I guess that those with more extremist views turned to red lyrium in order to defy the Chantry.
