Why do you think the Templars turned to red Lyrium?

I can't wait to punish any rogue templars. Heh heh heh.

But discovering that they're stealing corrupted lyrium is a disturbing development. I knew they were addicted but not that much. Maker's Breath.

If the game has them attacking dwarven merchants or the thaigs for lyrium that's another reason to kill them, IMHO.

Super obvious why. Templars broke off from the Chantry, who controlled the lyrium trade/stock. They still needed a form of lyrium to sustain their unique abilities, in addition to red lyrium proven to be more potent and grant supernatural, unheard of powers (Meredith had super strength, was able to leap great distances, and reanimate inanimate objects).

I will be very surprised if Meredith animating statues is canon. I might be proven wrong when the game comes out, but until then I'm fairly convinced that was Varric varricing her powers.

I'd be hugely disappointed if that was the case, since it was such a great scene and adds an interesting touch to the mystery of red lyrium.

Look on the bright side: we don't know yet.

She animated the statues in cutscene. Why wouldn't it be canon? Cullen was there, btw. He would know.

Well, it strikes me as pretty far out of line with the powers that have previously been shown to exist within the setting, and we know that Varric is willing to tell Cassandra stretchers. Besides, I'm not saying that it's not canon, just that it's not provably canon yet.

It is Dumat's will that they corrupt and defile themselves, another blow to servants of the chantry :P

EDIT: Accidently wrote in wrong thread.

On topic, my reasoning for the change is simple. The stuff is stronger and is so far unregulated by the chantry should they be able to find the source.

Because you can evolve into a brand new rock type Pokémon :D

Hey do you think the normal Templars will be fighting red Templars?

The power red lyrium grants is very interesting. In vids we have seen behemoths cause lyrium to grow out of the ground in a sort of earthbending fashion, Templar captains able to hurl chunks of it, and the red templar assassin have spikes for arms ;)

To help them fight the Inquisitor's Jar of Bees.

I would like to see the Templars driven to red lyrium in the same way that the mages are driven to blood magic. Would really help show that the Templars and mages aren't necessarily all that different, at least on a personal level, and thus make siding with the templars a lot more palatable for a character not directly influenced by the templar/mage conflict. Just as we have sympathetic and unsympathetic blood mages, I hope we get similar insights into the reasons why a Templar might turn to red lyrium, from noble goals like protecting themselves or others to just a lust for power.
