So I'm playing around with a couple choices in the keep and I'm kinda stumped on what the best/better option when it

comes to that darn Mirror. I recall the mirror to be very troublesome in the game and Merrill could never get it to fully work despite her best efforts. There was always an underlying sense of dread with that thing.

But it has been a few years since I've played DA:2 so I'm kinda fuzzy on the exact details of the mirror and how Merrill's story arc

ends with said mirror, I've always just destroyed the thing however i'm wondering now if that actually is a better option than allowing Merrill to keep it. Surely some of you have saved the mirror, what are the general reasons to save the mirror?

Is the mirror not too dangerous to leave intact?

The mirror doesn't actually do anything in the game. The problems all stem from other peoples' overreactions.

Have you read the Masked Empire? I know that book helped me figure out what decision I was going to import, although luckily it was already my canon decision. :)

(I had her restore it)

I still blame the mirror for all dat tension. And for Merrill sometimes not listening Hawke.

I have not read that book so I have no clue what it sheds light on in terms of the usefulness of the mirror.

Would you kindly elaborate in a spoiler tag. Please.

OP.

Because the Mirror has been cleansed of the Taint and anything else impure. She literally lived with it in her house for years and nothing bad happened.

And because its obviously a powerful relic from a Golden Age of wonders. I hate to destroy priceless things like that.

But it probably won't matter in DA:I

Ok thanks for the answers. I think I'll have her keep it since I'm kinda getting the impression I'm just afraid of an ancient rustic mirror.

I believe in the old Merrill thread Mary Kirby confirmed Merrill gives up blood magic if she destroys the mirror, as such I've always considered it the best path to take.  As for the mirror itself there is no guarantee that if the mirror is reactivated it won't become tainted again.  Better safe than sorry I'd say.

I can't imagine destroying it, largely because I make all the decisions that Merrill likes and don't want to withhold the arulin'holm, as it seems badly unfair.

Interesting.... Is it only when the mirrors are corrupted that travel through them is borderline fatal?

I vaguely recall in origins the Dalish Elf origin has you and another Elf stumble upon one and I'm pretty sure

the elf goes through the mirror and bad things happen but I can't remember. Maybe the darkspawn had just

ruined the mirror. Anyways I appreciate the replies, Its made an impact in my cannon world-state so *Golf-Calp*

It depends on what kind of person your Hawke is

If your Hawke is someone who is very curious, very knowledge oriented and very fascinated with artifacts and relics, then you would support Merrill in her quest to rebuild the Eluvian.

If your Hawke is someone who places a high value on the sentient costs of pursuing things like this and by sentient cost I mean how many being would have to be harmed in the process of knowledge acquisition, then you would want the Eluvian destroyed.

It is an age old debate of does the end justify the means when it comes to knowledge acquisition and knowledge understanding ? It is balancing act between knowledge acquisition and sentient costs of doing so.

Merrill undoubtedly leans towards the "I want to gain knowledge regardless of the cost" but your Hawke's opinions can reaffirm that or change that.

Merrill needed at least one person (Hawke) to believe in her while anchoring her in the real world with her friends like Isabella and Varric. That's basically how Merrill's friendship worked as far as I understood it.

Besides my Inquisition might have the chance to use it as a back door to ambush Briala's forces.

i thought about it like this: i will support her decision but as her hubby i have look out for her just case we does do something that could hurt others. Sometimes if things are put in the past best to leave it there. Ya know?. Im no hater of anchient lore but unknowns can be dangerous

This is more meta gaming but apparently keeping the mirror is going to be a "bad call" according to Mike Laidlaw.

Big Briala fan here...but if you don't like her, why wouldn't you want her to use it? If the mirror is still in Kirkwall, there's no worse place to send someone. :P

Did he say it was going to be a bad call, or it was a bad call? Because given that no matter what happens, Marethari dies and potentially her entire clan too, one could ague that it was a bad call for her to want to do it, especially since we (in a metagame sense) know that Merrill can't use it nor was it the only eluvian out there. Or maybe it was because he's anti-blood magic. Or. Basically, whats the context here?

It looks to be "was." It also said "fixing the mirror," not "not destroying the mirror." So there's not really any ominous implication.

We've seen and read about a dozen Eluvians and somehow Merrill has the only "bad call" mirror?

Its Bioware. They want to teach us all a "lesson" about magic and mages ever since they tried too hard back in DA2.
